Sri Lanka pacer Milan Rathnayake ruled out of second Bangladesh Test
Colombo, June 23 (UNI) Sri Lanka quick Milan Rathnayake has been ruled out for the second Test against Bangladesh after sustaining a left-side strain in the Galle Test. The hosts will also be without the services of veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who drew curtains on his Test career following the series opener. In their stead, the hosts have added left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando and the prodigious tweaker Dunith Wellalage in their ranks. Fernando, who has featured across 27 Tests for Sri Lanka, has 79 dismissals to his name. Wellalage on the other hand, only has a solitary Test appearance to his name, having made his debut against Pakistan back in 2022, an ICC report said. The first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had ended in a stalemate with the visitors putting in a stellar display with the bat. The series marks the first assignment for both the sides in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle. Sri Lanka crush Australia in record 174-run rout
Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage took four wickets to give a hapless Australia their lowest ever total in Asia with a 174-run loss in yesterday's second and final ODI. Chasing a target of 282 in Colombo, a much-changed Australia testing their lineup for next week's Champions Trophy were bundled out for a meager 107. The spectacular collapse saw them lose their last seven wickets for just 28 runs. 'Not the best result we wanted. We used a lot of players and everyone got a game,' Australia skipper Steve Smith said. 'Credit to Sri Lanka. They deserved the series win. We struggled a bit in Colombo... Their bowlers were superb.' Asitha Fernando set the tone with a fiery opening spell of 3-23 in four overs before the spinners tightened the screws. Wellalage triggered the collapse, bamboozling Josh Inglis with a skiddy arm ball that crashed into the stumps. In his next over, he delivered another peach, rattling the dangerous Glenn Maxwell's timber to finish 4-35. Wanindu Hasaranga joined the party from the other end to take three more, including Smith, who was trapped plumb in front. This emphatic victory sealed a 2-0 series win for Sri Lanka against the defending world champions and propelled them to fifth in the ODI rankings. It also told the cricketing world that Sri Lanka's absence from the upcoming Champions Trophy, after finishing ninth in the 2023 World Cup, will be felt. 'Not often you beat Australia,' Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka said. 'Today was our day and the spinners did a superb job,' he added. 'We are disappointed that we are not in the Champions Trophy... the important thing is that we don't get into a similar situation again.' Sri Lanka's batting had been under the microscope in recent weeks, but the top order silenced critics with a commanding display.

Asalanka helps Sri Lanka upstage weakened Australia
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka led by example and smashed a belligerent hundred to set up a 49-run victory over a depleted Australia in their low-scoring opening one-day international in Colombo on Wednesday. Australia's second-string pace attack bowled out Sri Lanka for 214 in 46 overs despite Asalanka's nearly run-a-ball 127 while coping with cramps following his decision to bat first. Chasing a modest target, Australia could not recover from a top order meltdown and were all out for 165 in 33.5 overs. Australia arrived in Sri Lanka without their injured pace duo of captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Mitchell Starc, their lone frontline quick in the 2-0 test series sweep in Sri Lanka, has withdrawn from the ODI squad for personal reasons and will miss the Champions Trophy, which starts next Wednesday. Australia did not really miss them though as their fresh new-ball pair of Spencer Johnson (2-44) and Aaron Hardie (2-13) blew away the Sri Lankan top half, reducing the hosts to 55-5 in the 15th over. Player of the match Asalanka added 67 runs with Dunith Wellalage (30) to prop up Sri Lanka and refused to throw in the towel even though wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Asalanka developed cramps but took a single off Nathan Ellis to bring up his fourth ODI hundred. The left-hander smacked five sixes and 14 fours before falling in the 46th over to Sean Abbott who was the pick of Australia's bowlers, claiming 3-61. With the tourists deciding to rest opener Travis Head after the test series in Sri Lanka, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short walked out to begin the chase but Australia slumped to 31-4 inside 10 overs after Asitha Fernando's double strike. Short fell lbw for a two-ball duck to the seamer, who in his next over took a return catch to send back Fraser-McGurk for two. Cooper Connolly perished by fluffing his sweep shot against spinner Maheesh Theekshana (4-40). Dunith Wellalage struck with his first delivery to take the prized wicket of Steve Smith, who will also lead Australia in the Champions Trophy, for 12. Marnus Labuschagne (15) did not last long either and Australia slumped to 85-6 when Asalanka dismissed a set Alex Carey (41). Abbott (20) and Hardie (32) offered some late resistance but it was not enough in the end. The second and final ODI, also in Colombo, is scheduled for Friday.
