Fagan hails Dunkley after Dogs win

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has hailed Josh Dunkley as the best defensive midfielder in the AFL following a match-winning turn against his former club the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba on Friday. Dunkley was imperious in the middle against the team where he won an AFL premiership in his debut season in 2016. The 28-year-old notched 14 tackles and had 28 disposals to be among the Lions' best as the premiers won a fourth-straight match and improved their hopes of a top four finish. Dunkley joined the Lions ahead of the 2023 season and has played a leading role in the team reaching grand finals in each of his first two years at the club. "If I was picking an All-Australian team, and they wanted to pick a bloke in the midfield who's a really good defensive player, he's the best defensive midfielder in the competition," Fagan said. "And probably the best I've ever seen. "I haven't seen them all, but the way he values that part of the game is just incredible." Another midfield star for the Lions, Hugh McCluggage, also came in for praise after a typically impressive display in his 200th AFL match. "He's getting a little bit of acknowledgement these days about what a good player is," Fagan said of the 27-year-old. "He's never been an All-Australian, but in our eyes he's a star - not just because he's a good footballer. "He's a great team player, and he's an excellent leader, and he's an unbelievable person." IND vs ENG: Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues shine in run-chase as India take 1-0 lead in ODI series

Deepti Sharma played one of the best knocks of her career in what was turning out to be tricky run-chase at The Rose Bowl in Southampton as India took a 1-0 lead in three-match ODI series. Coming into bat at 124/4 in a run-chase of 259, Deepti struck an unbeaten 62 off 64 balls and stitched together a 90-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues, who was once again impressive at No 5 for India. With a little help from Amanjot Kaur in the end, who played a handy cameo of 20 off 14 balls, India got home in 48.2 overs to open the series with an impressive win. Earlier in the day, young seamer Kranti Goud impressed with two wickets upfront before Sophia Dunkley's unbeaten 92-ball 83 lifted England to a respectable 258 for six after opting to bat first and being trouble before the halfway stage when the wicket of captain Nat Sciver-Brunt fell at 87/4. Besides Goud (2/55 in 9 overs), off-spinner Sneh Rana (2/31 in 10 overs) too picked up two wickets to continue her good form since coming back into the ODI side (although the latter left the field with an apparent hamstring issue later on). Alice Davidson-Richards contributed 53 in 73 balls during a 106-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Dunkley, which formed the nucleus of the England innings after they lost four wickets for 97 runs. Dunkley struck nine fours during her stay in the middle. Asked to bowl first, India enjoyed early success as Goud dismissed Amy Jones with a stunning delivery for her first international wicket in her second ODI. It was an eventful over by the 21-year-old as she bowled a hat-trick of wides before making amends with one that nipped back sharply before hitting the top of the middle stump. The wobble seam kept the batter guessing as she leaned forward to defend, only to realise that the ball has crashed through the gate. Just as England were looking to recover from the early blow, Goud struck for the second time, a lovely inswinger trapping opener Tammy Beaumont in front of the wicket. The on-field umpire was not convinced, but an Indian review clearly showed the ball hitting the top of middle stump. At 20 for two in the fourth over, England needed a partnership and they got it through the in-form Emma Lamb and skipper Sciver-Brunt, the duo adding 71 runs to steady the ship. However, England lost both the set batters in the space of two overs with off-spinner Sneh Rana inflicting the damage on the home side by sending back Lamb (39 off 50 balls) and Sciver-Brunt (41 off 52 balls). The pressure got to Lamb as she hit one straight to mid-off after England failed to a get a boundary for five overs. As for Sciver-Brunt, she drove Rana uppishly for Jemimah Rodrigues to pull off an excellent catch. Dunkley and Alice then came to the home team's rescue, but both were aided by dropped catches during their partnership, with Goud and Rodrigues putting down relatively easy chances that could have helped India restrict England to a much lower total. Deepti goes big, and it sails all the way! 💪 Watch #ENGWvINDW 1️⃣st ODI – LIVE NOW on #SonyLIV & Sony Sports Network — Sony LIV (@SonyLIV) July 16, 2025 In the run-chase, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal once against provided a good start (their partnership tally has now crossed 1000 runs in just 21 matches). But Mandhana's dismissal brought about a slow-down as Pratika and Harleen Deol never quite found the top gear in their partnership. Then came a period where India first Rawal – Sophie Ecclestone producing a top delivery to breach her defence that also led to a spicy moment as the duo brushed shoulders. And after that Harleen was out in a bizarre fashion, failing to ground her bat or feet and finding herself short of the crease. Harmanpreet Kaur also quickly followed suit, but then came the match-defining partnership between Jemimah and Deepti that took India close to the finish line. The highlight of Deepti's knock was a six over midwicket, where she crunched one through the leg side for the only maximum of the match. She remained unbeaten after Richa Ghosh fell and along with Amanjot, took India home with 10 balls to spare. (With PTI inputs)

WATCH: Harleen Deol makes blunder while running between the wickets, dismissed in bizarre fashion in 1st IND vs ENG ODI

Harleen Deol is no stranger to going viral in England – her catch on the boundary rope in July 2021 went to the corners of the internet that cricket, especially the women's game, had gone before. On Wednesday night, she found herself at the center of a moment that could potentially travel far on the interweb, but as a blooper. Harleen, during the run-chase of the first ODI between England and India, tapped the ball to mid on and took off for a quick single in the 22nd over. It seemed like a risky single at the start, but if anything, Harmanpreet Kaur at the non-striker's end appeared to be in danger while running towards the striker's crease. Harleen had a head start and should have comfortably completed the run. But a direct hit caught the India No 3 short in an embarrassing dismissal at The Rose Bowl. As the replays showed, she was lethargic in grounding her bat the non-striker's end, and didn't manage to get her feet over the crease as well. Alice Davidson-Richards' throw gave England a breakthrough out of nowhere as India lost quick wickets in the run-chase. Shortly after her dismissal, Harmanpreet fell too and former India men's head coach Ravi Shastri on commentary pointed out how an elementary error can change the course of the match. Former India captain Anjum Chopra posted on X: 'Unbelievable! No way! Is it that difficult to be comfortable and safe ? Losing an opportunity to score runs in international cricket and win a match … Easily Missed!' Direct hit. GONE. ADR, quick hands 🔥 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 16, 2025 For what it is worth, here's the catch of Harleen from the T20I in Northampton that dismissed Amy Jones. A fantastic piece of fielding 👏 We finish our innings on 177/7 Scorecard & Videos: — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 9, 2021 In the series opener on Wednesday, England posted 258 for six against India after opting to bat first. Sophia Dunkley amassed 83 in 92 balls to emerge as the top-scorer for England, while Alice Davidson-Richards (53), skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt (41) and Emma Lamb (39) also chipped in with useful contributions. Kranti Goud (2/55) and Sneh Rana (2/31) picked up two wickets apiece, while Shree Charani (1/46) and Amanjot Kaur (1/58) took one each. Davidson-Richards contributed 53 in 73 balls during a 106-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Dunkley, which formed the nucleus of the England innings after they lost four wickets for 97 runs. Dunkley struck nine fours during her stay in the middle.

Dunkley, ADR lift England women to 258/6 in first ODI

WHEN Sophia Dunkley walked out to bat at No 5 in the first ODI against India on Wednesday, England were in a spot of bother. They had just lost Emma Lamb, who looked set for a big score, with the scoreboard reading 91/3. Ten balls and six runs later, Dunkley watched England's best batter and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt get out to a stunning catch by Jemimah Rodrigues off Sneh Rana. With the Indian spinner applying the brakes, the hosts were in trouble. Dunkley, however, did not fluster. Joined by Alice Davison-Richards, Dunkley kept the scoreboard moving in singles and doubles. The duo were in no hurry as the first goal was to build a partnership and bat for the next 15 overs. They did even better. Together, ADR and Dunkley added 106 runs for the fifth wicket with both of them bringing up their fifties. On a surface that was on the slower side, Indian spinners, especially Rana, were able to take the pace off, ensuring that there were no easy boundaries. However, after the early wickets from Kranti Goud, who made the new ball seam around, Dunkley and ADR used their feet as well as the crease to negate the spinners. Just when it looked like both of them were set for big scores, ADR had a momentary lapse of concentration and was stumped off the bowling of N Shree Charani for 53 runs.

Brisbane star Josh Dunkley delivers classy message to beaten Carlton players

Brisbane star Josh Dunkley has delivered a classy message to Carlton players after helping the Lions to a big win on Thursday night. Dunkley racked up 28 possessions (14 contested), 13 tackles and six marks in a brilliant performance that won him the inaugural Robert Walls Medal. Walls, 74, died in May following a battle with cancer. Carlton and Brisbane loom large in his football career. The centre half-forward was a three-time premiership player at Carlton from 1968-72 and also coached the Blues to the '87 premiership. Walls coached Brisbane from 1991-95 and was a pivotal figure in club history, helping turn them around from the 'Bad News Bears' to their first finals appearance. Dunkley was judged best afield and presented the medal by Walls' son Daniel. 'Firstly, I just want to say thank you, it is an absolute honour to win the first one of these,' he told Daniel and the crowd from the podium. Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes also paid tribute to Walls. 'What a moment that is with Daniel ... No more popular figure than Wallsy in this game. For both clubs and one of the best media performers that I've ever seen. A huge loss to the game,' he said. Dunkley then spoke to Channel 7 and immediately sympathised with the Carlton players, who were left to lament another loss. 'Carlton have been so strong this year and the way they are still backing up after all of the pressure on them,' he said. 'A great night for us, but at the same time I feel for boys because they are trying their absolute hearts out.' Carlton's horror run continued with the 37-point loss as embattled coach Michael Voss desperately seeks to release a pressure valve. The Blues went goalless for a 40-minute period from late in the second quarter and the reigning premiers romped to a 15.13 (103) to 9.12 (66) victory at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night. A fourth straight loss poured more heat on Carlton and Voss in a tough period for the under-fire coach, who was the subject of a death threat last week. The Blues trailed 20-0 after just nine minutes in a poor start headlined by one comical passage of play. A Nick Haynes kick fell in Cam Rayner's lap when target Lachie Cowan collided with umpire Andrew Heffernan, and Rayner set up a Charlie Cameron goal. The inside-50 count at one point was 14-2 in Brisbane's favour before the Blues worked their way into the contest. Marc Pittonet gave them a lift with a 60-metre barrel that sailed through after the quarter-time siren, and the Lions led 5.4 to 3.3. Pittonet was then part of the defence that bizarrely failed to touch a Will Ashcroft shot on the goal line in the second term, but responded by kicking his second major. That and a 50-metre penalty against Zac Bailey, which gifted Patrick Cripps a goal, helped the Blues trim the margin to 12 points. But defender Matt Carroll was twice caught in possession, directly leading to a pair of Brisbane goals, as they widened the gap in the blink of an eye. A 30-point buffer at halftime grew to 52 by the final change as the Blues lost Orazio Fantasia to a hamstring injury and conceded a run of seven consecutive goals. Carlton captain Cripps (26 disposals, nine clearances) and George Hewett (33, nine) battled against the tide, while spearhead Charlie Curnow went goalless for a fourth straight week. Tom De Koning, who is weighing up a huge contract offer from St Kilda, received Bronx cheers from Blues fans and finished with one goal from 14 disposals playing predominantly in attack.
