From courtroom to clubhouse: Busy day for Jacob Zuma
Former President Jacob Zuma showed his support for Bonginkosi Khanyile at the Durban Regional Court on Friday, 11 July. Khanyile stands accused of inciting violence during the July 2021 unrest, which erupted after Zuma was sentenced for contempt of court for failing to appear before the State Capture Commission. In addition to this charge, Khanyile faces charges of contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act, for which he was arrested last year. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member is also alleged to have made a public statement during the 2024 national elections. He allegedly encouraged citizens to protest and potentially engage in violence if the political party of his choice was not included on the ballot. JULY UNREST CASE POSTPONED According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the state has already presented evidence from five witnesses. The case has now been postponed to two new sets of dates: 29 September to 3 October 2025, and again from 13 to 17 October 2025. This is to allow for the continuation of the state's case. Following his court appearance, Zuma is expected to attend the MK Party's Annual Youth Golf Development event. According to a statement released by the party, he is scheduled to tee off at the Royal Durban Golf Club. The golf day turned heads for its hefty price tag, reportedly costing R250 000 for the Durban fundraiser. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. Casino predator: woman (74) charged with drugging and robbing elderly victims
Hannah Naidoo Image: Yoshini Perumal A 74-year-old woman has been re-arrested for allegedly drugging and robbing another vulnerable, elderly woman at Suncoast Casino. It has been alleged that the suspect preyed on the victims in the casino by striking up a conversation and befriending them. Hannah Naidoo, of Westville, was first arrested in October 2024 after she allegedly assaulted, drugged, and robbed a 92-year-old grandmother of R337 000 worth of jewellery and watches from her flat, in March of the same year. According to the charge sheet Naidoo befriended the woman about a month before the crime at the casino, and their friendship grew. The woman lived alone. On March 22, 2024, Naidoo and an accomplice - who is unknown to the State - had visited the woman in the late afternoon at her flat in the Durban Central Business District. It has been alleged that they took cake and a milkshake for the woman. The milkshake was allegedly spiked with a sedative known as benzodiazepines. Naidoo allegedly encouraged the woman to consume the milkshake, which rendered her unconscious. The woman was then allegedly assaulted and robbed. Her son and grandson found her unconscious on her bed, two days after the robbery. She was taken to hospital and regained consciousness four days later in ICU. None of the stolen items were recovered. Following police investigations, Naidoo was arrested and charged with robbery with aggravated circumstances and attempted murder. At the time, Naidoo was granted bail of R5 000. She is expected to stand trial later this year. Last Thursday, Naidoo was re-arrested on charges of attempted murder and theft. She appeared in the Durban Regional Court on Friday. It has been alleged she drugged and robbed another woman at Suncoast Casino in May this year. State prosecutor Calvin Govender told the court that on May 1, at Suncoast Casino, Naidoo was alleged to have put an unknown substance into the 66-year-old woman's coffee in an attempt to sedate her. He said this resulted in her getting medical complications and she was admitted to hospital. The woman was allegedly robbed of R20 000 in cash. Naidoo's attorney Advocate Ashwin Baijnath urged the court to hear the matter again at the earliest possible date instead of the seven day adjournment for a bail application. He said Naidoo had cancer and needed to undergo chemotherapy on Monday (June 23). Govender said the State would accommodate Naidoo, and ensure that she has access to her treatment, but she should remain in custody until her bail application. However, by Monday, Baijnath had not provided the court proof of Naidoo having stage 4 cancer, details of her chemotherapy sessions or details of the facility she needed to be taken to or her oncologist's contact details. She was remanded into custody at Westville Prison while she awaits her formal bail application. Govender said the State was opposed to bail, and that two more charges, with complainants from Umhlali and Sydenham, are to be added to Naidoo's existing charges. Suncoast Casino did not respond to questions at the time of print. THE POST

Durban mom breaks silence after being kidnapped, bound, and left in car boot
A victim of carjacking and kidnapping has welcomed the 27-year sentence handed down at the Durban Regional Court. Montclair resident Carol Madondo spoke to Southlands Sun about the incident after Sfundo Mfuphi was sentenced. Mfuphi (23) and his accomplice hijacked Madondo's car and kidnapped her in Woodlands, Montclair, in 2023. Mfuphi will spend the next 27 years in jail. Madondo said she is still reeling from shock and told The Sun that the conviction brought a bit of relief for her. 'Justice has been served, but my prayer was always to see both of them face the punishment they deserve for what they did to me,' said Madondo. The investigating officer stationed at Montclair Police Station, Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini, said the other suspect is still at large. Recalling the traumatic events, Madondo said that she was waiting outside a crèche when she saw two men approaching but never imagined she would become their next victim. 'These were young men I never thought could harm me. They demanded my car keys, and one of the suspects pointed a firearm at me while the other entered the car. At gunpoint they forced me into the vehicle and drove off. He covered my face with a cloth and made me lie on his lap. 'I kept praying to God, asking for help to escape safely. After a while, the car came to a stop. The driver was unable to shift gears, and that's when the other suspect jumped out to check the problem. I peeked through the cloth and saw a signboard that read 'uMlazi'. That's when I realised I was in uMlazi,' she said. Cable ties used to bind her hands The suspects bound her hands with cable ties and forcibly placed her in the boot of her car, leaving her terrified and helpless. 'The car wouldn't move, so they eventually abandoned it and took my purse, cash, and other personal belongings,' she said. After the men fled the scene, Madondo struggled to move until she managed to open the boot. 'The boot wasn't properly closed, so I was able to push it open with my knees. When I finally got out of the car, I reached out to nearby houses for help. I called the crèche to inform them that I wouldn't be able to pick up the child due to what had happened to me. I also called my children at home, and they immediately came with a spare key. While still in uMlazi I contacted the police at Brighton Beach Police Station. However, the officers who arrived told me to file a report at Montclair Police Station since the incident didn't occur within their jurisdiction,' she added. She said the most traumatic part was being asked to identify the suspect during an identification parade. 'I am still haunted by nightmares when I think about what happened to me. Driving remains a challenge, as I no longer trust people following me on the road. It feels as though there are individuals out there who want to harm me,' she added.
