The 12 Best Prime Day Purchases Our Gear Team Made
We're on day three of Prime Day (should it be Prime Week at this point?), and after days of deal-tracking on our liveblog and various Prime Day stories, it's no surprise that we here at WIRED have been shopping the sales. We know a good one when we see one, after all. If it's a sale so good even our team can't resist it, you know you should probably check it out. Here's everything our team has shopped so far during Prime Day. Looking for more Prime Day deals? Don't miss our guide to the Absolute Best Prime Day Deals and our Prime Day liveblog, plus our various guides to deals on Kindles, beauty tools, Dysons, mattresses, and so much more. WIRED Featured Deals The Deals Our Team Is Shopping For the Readers My Kindle Scribe arrived last night, and I couldn't wait to set it up before bed. Honestly, it's taking all my willpower not to grab it from my nightstand right now and dive into a good book. But alas, I'm on the clock. I've been debating whether to get a Kindle for a couple of years, because I love my paperbacks, but I finally decided to go for it when fellow reviewer Nena Farrell sold me on it. Reading in bed, before bed, is difficult for me, because I like to highlight and annotate my books, but I can't doze off with all my stationery sprawled on top of me. It's super sleek and slim, and I adore the premium pen that comes with a soft-tipped eraser. It's a bit larger than I expected but in a good way. The front-lit display can really light up a dark room, but I'm leaning toward the warmer settings. I immediately noticed that it doesn't have color features, which was a bummer, but I think I'll get used to it. Some Amazon deals include a fabric cover, and if you're thinking about getting a Kindle, definitely check those out, because I need a cover ASAP. —Boutayna Chokrane An Eye for Pie I've probably seen one of these at every garage sale I've been to in the past 10 years, passing them up because I didn't want to have to store them. But here I am, paying retail price for not just one pie iron but two! My family camps every year here on the West Coast (or tries to, anyway), and for the past few years, burn bans have precluded us from cooking anything fun. I'm probably conjuring a burn ban this year just by buying these, but I consider it an investment in my fantasy of making stuffed French toast and pizza pockets, even if that ends up being next year. (If I'm not fed up with storing them before then.) —Kat Merck The Cool Kid Tumbler WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe bought an Owala 40-ounce reusable tumbler on the first day of Prime Day, and it has already arrived to keep her hydrated until Prime Day finishes its wild run. So far she really likes the handle—she says it's got a perfect groove for her thumb to rest in—and that the slimmer bottom can fit into cup holders when you hop into the car. You can remove the straw and still be able to drink from it, and that straw-free style is leakproof. Extra bonus: Removable rubber seals make it super easy to clean, which is huge. I had the same tumbler and loved it but can't find it now … which means this is a clear sign for me to also purchase one. Monochrome Workout Gear Have you heard of color analysis? It's a concept where each person has a specific season of colors that suit them best. It's been catching attention on TikTok, particularly from me obsessively searching how I can figure out my season. On the recommendation of other WIRED gals, I asked ChatGPT, which told me I'm a cool summer and that I can no longer wear orange, black, or gold. A different quiz has since told me I might be a cool winter instead and didn't ban black, but now I fear my all-black outfits at dance class aren't what I should wear. (Don't get me started on how many gold earrings I own.) My solution? Dark blue outfits, specifically a new set from CRZ Yoga. A few other WIRED staffers praised the brand's workout gear, and I liked that I could find a nice shade of dark, ashy blue that should match whatever of these seasons I'm in and won't show sweat or bloat as easily as a lighter-colored set. I scored both a set of shorts and a workout bra in the Butterluxe fabric, and I'm excited to get it in the mail to see if it's as soft as I hope. Books for the Kids WIRED reviewer Adrienne So used Prime Day to pick up the Ramona Collection for her son. The classic series is on a serious discount, and it's the perfect book series to pick up—a story about a rambunctious 8-year-old—when you have a rambunctious 8-year-old like Adrienne does. Snag it on sale for a gift, or add to the bookshelf of any kiddo room (or your own nostalgia bookshelf—now I'm checking if Amelia Bedelia is on sale on the pretense of reading it to my toddler, but I really want it for me!). A Cat Parent Kit Unfortunately, this grooming kit is the only thing I've bought so far for Amazon Prime Day. As the pet tech writer here at WIRED, my cats are so spoiled. Like, if they were humans, they'd be bad people. (Oh wait, now that I'm writing this, I realize I've also bought a cat tent, treats, and toys and have been seriously eyeing this floor-to-ceiling cat tree.) But anywho, one of my aforementioned cats has super-beautiful, very floofy long hair, which unfortunately for both of us means that sometimes she gets poop stuck on the fur near her behind. At times, I've been a negligent mother, letting her clean up her own mess; wiped her with wet cloths; or once, took her for an ill-fated dip in the kitchen sink. This most recent time, I realized I have to intervene and help her get rid of the stinkiness, so I bought this cordless grooming kit with varying sizes of blades. That way I can make sure I'm being safe while trimming her sensitive areas. She might be resentful of me, but at least she still won't be a smelly cat anymore. —Molly Higgins A Washable Rug Washable rugs. Yes, you can shampoo your rugs, and I do often, but when you're potty training a puppy, sometimes you gotta throw the whole dang thing into the washing machine. I bought this rug at the start of Prime Day, and it has already arrived and been installed on my floor. My first impression is it's super soft and has been easy to clean (as it should be!) and that it's best to use a lighter vacuum. —Julia Forbes Adjustable Weights I have a vision for the extra-large landing at the base of my stairs: workout corner. This adorable workout mat I bought this week is the main inspiration for the space (which is on sale on its own site but not on Amazon, funny enough), along with a massive secondhand mirror I'll use to check my awful posture, but the big necessity of the space is on sale for Prime Day: adjustable weights. The set I got from LifePro goes up to 25 pounds on each dumbbell, but the single adjustable weights are also on sale. I'm on a mission to raise the strength in my left arm to balance with my right and am hoping these can help me get there. I'm also snagging these wrist weights on sale. A Shoe Saver Courtesy of Crep Protect Crep Protect Shoe Protector Spray & Biodegradable Sneaker Cleaning Wipes $26 $24 (8% off) Amazon My family is traveling to Alaska later this summer, and in a development that will surprise no parent anywhere, my 12-year-old is not interested in either owning or wearing any type of boot or appropriate footwear for seven days of hiking in the Klondike. My solution: a can of this waterproofing spray, a pair of old basketball shoes, and a prayer. Who knows if it will work; if you want to find out, just look for the family walking around Juneau with a tween who looks like he has wet, muddy clumps of mud for feet. —Kat Merck Body Butter Galore Courtesy of Sol de Janeiro Sol de Janeiro Rio Trio Body Cream Discovery Set $38 $30 (21% off) Amazon Remember Regina George's army pants and flip flops? Well, my fellow reviewer Boutayna Chokrane bought Sol De Janeiro's Rio Trio Discovery Set, so I bought the Rio Trio discovery set. There are three different body creams in the package, each promising different types of results, and my fellow writers have confirmed that the popular Brazilian Bum Bum Cream included in the set smells amazing. I can't wait to see what they all smell like and to hear which one both Boutayna and I like best of the set. We've validated our purchase with the fact that all three of these are travel-size, so you can bring them along on your next flight. Conveniently Eco-Friendly Coffee I felt really bad flying through as many K-Cups as I did with my Keurig coffee maker, so kudos to whoever invented a more eco-friendly solution. Pro tip: Buy filters to go with these pods; they make the machine run a lot more smoothly. —Julia Forbes The New Parent's Necessity With the impending arrival of our first child, my wife and I are learning that the amount of physical things you can acquire for said child is seemingly infinite. That's why we've been grabbing everything we can from friends and family and scooping up the rest on super sales. Like this very affordable baby mirror, our second such purchase for our second vehicle. We can't wait to get eyes (and keep eyes) on the little tyke, and this is a fun reminder. —Ryan Waniata

Bus drivers' strike halts services in parts of Melbourne and regional Victoria for 24 hours
Bus drivers have gone on strike in Victoria for the second time as part of an enterprise bargaining dispute. About 600 drivers for public transport operator CDC Victoria are in the midst of a 24-hour strike. No buses will run on CDC routes in Melbourne's west, including Wyndham Vale and Sunshine, Tullamarine in Melbourne's north, and Oakleigh in the city's south-east, as well in the regional cities of Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura. Late last month, 1,300 drivers from CDC and operator Dysons took part in what the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) said was the largest bus strike in VIctoria's history, shutting down one-third of the state's bus routes and charter services. The union said Dysons had since progressed its negotiations, but matters remained unresolved with CDC, resulting in a strike that began at 3am today and will last until tomorrow morning. "Bus drivers, like everybody in Victoria at the moment, are struggling under the cost-of-living crisis," TWU organiser Sam Lynch told ABC Radio Melbourne. "Their wages have not gone up with inflation over the last five to 10 years. "The offer that's currently on the table is just absolutely nowhere near resolving that." Mr Lynch said the drivers did not take strike action lightly. "Bus drivers don't want to be impacting the community like this," he said. "They like what they do, they like driving buses and getting people where they need to go, but unfortunately we are not getting the offer that we need to get from CDC in order to resolve this." The ABC has contacted CDC Victoria for comment. Mr Lynch said the drivers would take further strike action if the negotiations did not progress. Meanwhile, a tram derailment has caused early-morning disruptions in Kew, in Melbourne's east. A tram came off the rails on High Street at the Kew Junction at about 5am, cutting services along routes 48 and 109. The Department of Transport said it was caused by a fault with the rail. There were no passengers on board at the time. The driver was not hurt.

Major delays expected as hundreds of bus drivers go on strike in Victoria
Commuters in Melbourne have been warned to expect major delays on Wednesday when more than 800 bus drivers at two of Victoria's biggest bus companies go on strike. Transport Workers Union (TWU) members employed by Dysons Group and CDC Victoria will strike for 24 hours as part of planned industrial action over improvements to pay, rostering and safety. The strike follows months of failed negotiations, with the TWU demanding a deal that better recognises bus drivers and their importance within the community. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today 'The current offers from CDC and Dysons fall short. Our members have been patient, but that patience has run out,' TWU Victorian/Tasmanian director of organising Sam Lynch said. 'It's time for CDC and Dysons to stop dragging their feet and start listening to workers' calls for respect and a fair day's pay.' Dysons said it was disappointed with the union members' decision to strike given its recent proposal to improve wages and benefits for bus drivers, including a 9 per cent year-one wage increase. 'Industrial action, if carried out, will cause unnecessary inconvenience to public transport bus passengers,' it said. 'Dysons is working closely with the Department of Transport and Planning to minimise disruption to our passengers and valued customers, should this action proceed.' CDC said it was committed to negotiating with the TWU 'to reach a fair and reasonable resolution'. According to the transport department, if the strike goes ahead as planned about a quarter of Melbourne's 400 bus routes could be impacted. Commuters have been warned to expect major delays on routes in Melbourne's north and west, as well as in Ballarat, Mildura and Geelong. Bus routes operated by Dysons across Melbourne will run to a Saturday timetable. There will be no Dysons services on routes 301 Reservoir to Latrobe Uni express, 389 Mernda Station to Doreen Loop and 546 Heidelberg Station to Queen Victoria Market/Melbourne Uni. School services on all Dysons routes will continue to run. CDC Victoria will only operate school services from its depots in Oakleigh, Tullamarine, Sunshine and Mildura. 'Passengers on affected routes should consider other transport alternatives on Wednesday,' the transport department said. Normal timetables should resume on Thursday.

Shoppers rush to buy ‘better than Dyson' cooling fan amid heatwave as it's slashed to £68
The Dreo tower fan has been hailed 'better than Dyson' by several Amazon shoppers and is ideal for cooling down your home during the heatwave – and it's on sale for £68 Whilst we may have all been looking forward to the warmer weather, one thing we're less thrilled about is how warm our homes get. As British homes are typically designed to retain heat, the hot summer months and mini heatwaves can often leave them feeling stuffy and too hot to relax in. A fan is of course the best way to help keep the air cool and circulating around the house, and Amazon shoppers think they've found the best one to shop that's affordable, works well and is, according to them, 'better than Dyson.' The Dreo 28dB Silent Tower Fan is usually priced at £79.99, but it's currently on sale with 15% off, slashing the price to £67.99. The Dreo Silent Tower Fan comes in both black and white colourways, with the black available at the reduced price whilst the white one is still full price at £79.99. One of the biggest draws of the fan is that it's almost silent, operating at just 28 decibels, which means you can have it running without interrupting your sleep or drowning out the TV. It also has an automatic switch off as well as an eight hour timer that's ideal for using overnight, and when used in sleep mode it automatically mutes to prevent disrupted sleep. The LED display also automatically switches off, keeping your room cool and dark – ideal for sleeping during the heat. You can choose from four different modes – normal, natural, sleep, and auto – and there are also four speed settings to pick from which range from a gentle breeze to a strong blow. The Dreo Silent Tower Fan also comes with a remote control so you can operate it from wherever you are in the room. To make sure all of your room remains cool, the Dreo Silent Tower Fan has a 90° oscillation to cover more areas, and cools the air at a rate of up to 25 feet per second. It measures 36 inches high, so the cool air will fill the room and reach you even whilst sitting or lying in bed. Amazon shoppers have been thrilled with their purchase, with one writing: 'I purchased 2 of these, my son has the gas boiler in his room and gets very hot, he did have a Dyson but this works much better, I have one due to menopause, I love the remote because I can turn it off and on depending how hot I feel.' Another agreed: 'Great fan. Very cold air and very easy to use. Best fan ever, so much better than the Dysons!' Some found it was not as quiet as they'd hoped, with one saying: 'I've only given 3 stars for now, only just taken it out of box to try it, working but definitely not quiet so why say it is? I've a slight headache already!' Others however disagreed, with another reviewer writing: 'Bought this fan last year and honestly one of the best thing I've ever purchased. It's so easy to use and it actually blows cold air out rather than just circulating the hot air. The different modes are really helpful ( sleep mode is so silent and perfect for me, I wake up to any noise). My whole family have bought one, would 10/10 recommend!' Another said: 'It's wonderful, practical, looks like a small juke box, classy and had no issues with its functionality. Much more economical than the premium brands like Dyson but does the same job if not better.' If you do want to add a Dyson fan to your home, however, now is the perfect time as the Dyson Cool Am07 Tower Fan in White And Silver is currently on sale. Usually priced at £349.99, it's now been reduced to £269.99, saving you £80 and giving you the most budget-friendly way to get your hands on a Dyson fan. Alternatively for those on a budget who just want a quick fix, the 32" White Tower Fan from Dunelm is just £30 and offers a quick solution to stuffy rooms. With three speed settings, an oscillating feature and a space-saving design its ideal for cooling down smaller spaces quickly.
