The Celtic boss has been hunting for a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi ever since the striker left to join Rennes in January. But Rodgers, 52, has now finally snapped up another player to potentially take his place. And he's looked at the Japanese market once again to bring fellow countryman of Kyogo to Parkhead. Celtic have completed the signing of Shin Yamada from Kawasaki Frontale - the same club the Hoops signed Reo Hatate from in 2021. A Kawasaki Frontale have announced that he has departed for good. A statement from them read: "We would like to inform you that Shin Yamada will be leaving the team at the end of today's (July 16th) activity in order to complete the necessary procedures to enable him to transfer to a club overseas. "We will notify you further regarding future plans as soon as they are officially decided. "In addition, after the Emperor's Cup third-round match against SC Sagamihara, which is being held today (July 16), Shin Yamada will give a speech to the supporters." Yamada, 25, joins the Scottish champions in a £1.5million just weeks after SunSport revealed the striker was a target. He was watched by Celtic a number of times last season as he helped his side reach the Asian Champions League final. Celtic launch new away kit with trailer featuring Scottish music icon and Hoops legends He scored 19 goals in the 2024 campaign but his form dipped this season as he has only netted six in all competitions. That hasn't stopped him from earning his bog move to Europe as he becomes the fourth Japanese player currently at Parkhead after Hayato Inamura joined Hatate and Daizen Maeda at the club. Celtic recently had as many as five Japanese players in the squad before Tomoki Iwata, Kyogo Furuhashi and Yuki Kobayashi all departed. Yamada made his Japan debut this month after being called up by Hajime Moriyasu to feature in the E-1 international tournament in South Korea. He only called upon players who are based in Japan which allowed Yamada to wear his nation's colours for the first time at senior level. He came off the bench in the 6-1 win over Hong Kong in the opening game of the competition. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Football: Ryo Germain nets again, Japan beat S. Korea in East Asian final

YONGIN, South Korea (Kyodo) -- Ryo Germain built on his impressive form with an early strike as Japan held on to beat South Korea 1-0 to claim their second successive East Asian E-1 men's football championship on Tuesday. Germain scored his fifth goal of the tournament just eight minutes into the winner-take-all finale, volleying in a cross from Yuki Soma at Yongin Mireu Stadium in a Seoul suburb. A week earlier, the 30-year-old Sanfrecce Hiroshima striker netted four times in the Samurai Blue's 6-1 opening win over Hong Kong when he made his national team debut. "My players made a great effort," Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu said. "They showed the pride of the J-League and the depth of our national team. The way they played this tournament made it difficult for me to select the World Cup squad." Japan's E-1 squad was selected entirely from the domestic J-League. The South Korean squad did not include players such as Tottenham star Son Heung Min, either. Japan and South Korea came into the match after both defeated China and Hong Kong in the four-team, round-robin event. South Korea first went close to scoring, with Na Sang Ho's shot hitting the far post in the seventh minute. The Koreans ramped up their attack in the second half, but Japan hung tough to defend dangerous situations en route to their third overall E-1 title. With the latest victory, Japan improved their win-loss record against South Korea to 16-40 with 23 draws. Both teams have qualified for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. Earlier Tuesday, China edged Hong Kong 1-0 thanks to a 20th-minute goal from Huang Zhengyu.

Football: Japan down China, to face South Korea for East Asian title

YONGIN, South Korea (Kyodo) -- Japan set up a winner-take-all clash with South Korea at the East Asian Football Federation E-1 men's championship by defeating China 2-0 on Saturday. Defending champions Japan moved to a 2-0 win-loss record to join hosts South Korea at the top of the four-team table, and the two teams will meet Tuesday for the title. Mao Hosoya got world No. 17 Japan on the scoresheet against 94th-ranked China with a powerful strike from just outside the box in the 11th minute at Yongin Mireu Stadium in a Seoul suburb. Six minutes later, China had a great chance to equalize, but Japan goalkeeper Tomoki Hayakawa denied Zhang Yuning in a one-on-one situation. Henry Heroki Mochizuki doubled the Samurai Blue's lead in the 64th minute with his first goal for Japan. "I think my goal came out of my aggressiveness," the 23-year-old Machida Zelvia player said. "I tried to join the attack as much as possible. I know I still have a lot to work on in both attack and defense, but I'll try to get better and cement my place on the team." Japan's E-1 championship squad has been selected entirely from the domestic J-League by manager Hajime Moriyasu. Veteran defender Yuto Nagatomo, 38, made his first Japan appearance since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Both China and Hong Kong have lost two matches in a row.
