Dubai unveils 15-member student council to represent all private schools
Dubai will soon have a 15-member student body, selected from across all private schools, nationalities and curricula, to "help shape the education journey" and "nurture leaders of tomorrow". It's part of the Leaders of Tomorrow game changer initiative under the Education 33 strategy. In a statement, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) said the members of the Dubai Students Council (DSC) will be selected based on nominations and an intense review process. It will be open to students from Grade 9/Year 10 to Grade 12/Year 13, with every Dubai private school allowed to nominate one student as long as they meet the eligibility criteria that includes good conduct, strong leadership potential, effective communication and teamwork skills, and active participation in school or community initiatives. Eligible students are also encouraged to discuss the nomination process with their school leadership. 'We encourage all eligible students, including Emiratis, to step forward and express their interest for the 2025-26 academic year," said Dr Amna Almaazmi, CEO of Growth and Human Development at KHDA. "Your ideas and perspectives matter, and your voice can help shape and enrich the education journey of every learner in Dubai." Once the nominations are in, a team from the KHDA will review and finalise the 15 members, who will begin their term from the 2025-26 academic year. Each student will serve a one-year term, with the option to reapply for a second term, subject to eligibility and their performance within the team. Announced by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, the Education 33 strategy is built on the belief that students are not just participants in education but are partners. The DSC members will act as a bridge between KHDA and students, fostering open communication and collaborative problem-solving. Game Changer initiatives will be rolled out in several phases over the next decade to support the E33 goals, redefine educational experiences and outcomes, and foster innovation and excellence across all levels of education.

Dubai's Higher Education Sector Sees Nearly 20% Rise In Enrollment
Dubai is emerging as one of the world's fastest-growing higher education hubs, with total student enrollment at private institutions rising by around 20 per cent in the 2024–25 academic year, and international student numbers jumping 29 per cent, according to figures released by Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and global consultancy L.E.K. Consulting. More than 42,000 students are now enrolled across 41 private higher education institutions licensed by the KHDA, with international students making up 35 per cent of the total — a figure expected to rise under the emirate's Education 33 strategy. Four new international universities opened in the current academic year alone, signalling strong investor confidence in Dubai's education sector. The data was released at an exclusive high-level briefing hosted by L.E.K. Consulting's Global Education Practice recently in Dubai. The event brought together policymakers, investors, and higher education leaders to discuss Dubai's ambitions to become a world-class destination for transnational education. 'Dubai's continued growth as a global hub for higher education is testament to our leadership's vision and the ambitious goals of the Dubai Plan 33,' saidDr Wafi Dawood, CEO of the Strategic Development Sector at KHDA. 'Through E33, we are building a future where Dubai is not only a destination for quality education, but a centre of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity.' The KHDA's City of Students initiative, part of its broader Education 33 strategy, aims to increase international student enrollment to 50 per cent by 2033, bolstering the emirate's reputation as a top-tier study destination. Ashwin Assomull, partner and head of the Global Education Practice at L.E.K. Consulting, said Dubai's higher education sector represents 'one of the most compelling growth markets globally,' citing its student-friendly infrastructure, global university presence, and favourable cost and regulatory environment. 'Dubai presents a significant opportunity for international universities to meet the evolving needs of both local and international students,' he said, noting that increasing regulatory restrictions in traditional anglophone markets are pushing institutions and students to seek new education hubs. The briefing also highlighted increasing participation from Emirati students, with enrollment in international universities up 22 per cent year-on-year — underlining Dubai's dual appeal to both domestic and overseas learners.

Dubai universities record 20% increase in student enrolment
Higher education institutes in the UAE have seen a 20 per cent increase in student enrolment for the academic year 2024-25. A total of 42,026 students are now enrolled at 41 private colleges, universities and other higher education institutions in Dubai — the highest number to date. Emirati student enrolment in the private higher education sector also grew by a record 22 per cent during the current academic year. The number of international students, those who have come to Dubai specifically to study, has also continued to rise, with a 29 per cent increase in enrolment compared to the previous year. International students now make up 35 per cent of the total student body at private higher education institutions in Dubai. Under the Education 33 (E33) strategy's, Dubai aims for international students to make up 50 per cent of the total student body by 2033 — a target that reflects the emirate's commitment to becoming a global hub for quality higher education. Earlier this year, at the Khaleej Times UniExpo event, experts had shared that many parents were choosing not to send their children abroad for studies, preferring to keep them in the UAE. Some even shared that the first question parents asked foreign university representatives was whether they had campuses in the UAE. Universities Of the 41 institutes in Dubai, 37 are international campuses, offering a growing and diverse range of academic programmes to meet the needs of future-focused learners. Four new international universities opened in Dubai during the 2024-25 academic year, from countries across the world including China, India, Russia, and Italy. The emirate has become a hotspot for some of the best universities around the world to open up campuses in. Earlier this year, during Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's India visit, The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), one of Asia's leading business schools and India's top-ranked business schools, to establish a world-class IIMA campus in Dubai. The institute will be allocated space within the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) where it will launch its one-year full-time MBA Programme later this year.
