FHP: Off-duty ECSO deputy was driver who struck, killed two pedestrians in July 5 crash

Florida Highway Patrol announced July 7 that an off-duty Escambia County Sheriff's deputy was the driver who struck and killed two pedestrians in a crash Independence Day weekend. The crash occurred on State Road 292 at River Road when a vehicle driven by the deputy hit two pedestrians trying to cross the roadway. "We can confirm the vehicle involved was an unmarked Escambia County Patrol Car with the law enforcement officer returning home from an off-duty job," FHP said. "The Escambia County Sheriff's Office employee was not actively patrolling nor on duty." The pedestrians, a 20-year-old man and 20-year-old woman from Alabama, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver did not suffer injuries. The News Journal reached out to the ECSO for comment but did not immediately receive a response. FHP says the crash remains under investigation. ECSO: Knife-wielding man shot and killed during confrontation with deputies at Arby's

Escambia County Sheriff's deputies killed an armed assailant June 19 at a Pensacola-area Arby's after he allegedly "moved aggressively" toward three deputies while armed with a knife. Deputies responded to the Arby's on U.S. Highway 98 around 3 p.m. after receiving reports a 37-year-old man wanted for multiple felonies that included domestic battery by strangulation, aggravated assault, burglary and grand theft had been spotted at the restaurant. When deputies arrived at the Arby's, the man reportedly fled from the parking lot inside the restaurant. "The suspect jumped the counter and struggled with a deputy before pushing the deputy to the ground," an ECSO release said. "He then grabbed a large knife and confronted three deputies who had also jumped the counter in pursuit." The man then "ignored deputies' commands" to drop the knife and "moved aggressively towards the deputies" while wielding the knife. At that time, all three deputies fired, striking him several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the deputies were injured, and all three were placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, per department policy.
