Indian Railways Tweaks Emergency Quota Rules, Big Relief For Common Passengers

Indian Railways has revised the rules for booking tickets under the Emergency Quota (EQ), making it mandatory for passengers to send their requests earlier than before. This change follows the Railway Ministry's recent decision to prepare reservation charts 8 hours before train departure to improve operational efficiency. Emergency quota seats are reserved for VIPs, railway staff, and passengers with medical emergencies. However, misuse of this facility and last-minute requests often delayed chart preparation, affecting the confirmation of waiting list tickets and causing inconvenience to passengers. Under the new rule, passengers seeking an EQ ticket must now submit their request at least a day in advance. "Emergency quota request for all the trains leaving between 0000 hours and 1400 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1200 hours on the previous day of journey," said a circular issued by the ministry on Tuesday. "Emergency quota request for all the remaining trains leaving between 14.01 hours and 23.59 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1600 hours on the previous day of journey," it added. The ministry has clarified that the requests received on the same day of the scheduled departure of a train will not be entertained. Regarding Sundays or any other public holidays, the ministry has said the requests for the release of accommodation in trains, for which the emergency quota is to be released on Sundays or clubbed holidays after Sundays, should be given during office hours on the previous working day. The circular said the reservation cell of the Railway Board receives a large number of requests from VIPs, railway officers, senior officers and other departments. "All efforts are made to allot the quota judiciously and with common prudence," it said. The ministry has urged all officers to adhere to these timings so that the allotments are given in time and chart preparation is not delayed, which not only results in extreme difficulties to the travelling public but can also lead to a delay in the departure of trains. It has also requested the forwarding authority to ensure the genuineness of the person under reference and also ensure strict compliance to existing guidelines regarding the allotment of the emergency quota. The move is aimed at streamlining the ticketing process, ensuring charts are prepared on time, and improving punctuality. For common passengers, this change means they will know the confirmation status of their waiting list tickets earlier, reducing uncertainty before travel.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV Spy Shots: No EQ To Be Found

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Mercedes-Benz has managed to put together a series of competent, quick, and undeniably luxurious all-electric EQ sedans and SUVs. But as praise-worthy as their road manners and extensive feature offerings may be, nobody is rushing to call them pretty. Without some elegance to back it up, how impressive can the three-pointed star really be? For its next generation of EVs, Mercedes is looking to right the EQ lineup's aesthetic wrongs and unite the company's design philosophy across both fossil fuel and battery-electric portfolios. Spurring this change along is a new the new MMA platform. It supports both ICE and EV configurations, affording designers the opportunity to produce a single, cohesive design for each model line regardless of its power source. The prototype photographed here still bears the unmistakable silhouette of a drag-optimized electric sedan, but even with the camouflage, we can see that the company's designers have managed to chisel away at some of the Dustbuster-esque elements that characterized its current crop of four-door electric cars. Instead, what we see here carries many of the same cues found on the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, which is also hitting the market in both ICE and battery-powered variants. The characteristic high butt/low nose stance of the EQ sedans is muted here, though the pedestrian-safe hood and its correspondingly blunted nose bring a touch of that character to the new offering, but it's not nearly as dramatic as the execution on the EQE and EQS. Curiously, our spies tell us that this sedan offers a liftback, rather than a traditional trunk. We're curious to see what that does for the rear end once the camo has been removed. If the CLA is any indication, the electric C-Class will likely offer far more sensible powertrains than some of those we've seen on high-end EVs. The CLA 350 4Matic will offer a combined 349 hp and 380 pound-feet of torque, while the 250+ variant will have just 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. While fairly tame numbers-wise, they still offer pony-car-like performance, with the CLA 350 4Matic hitting 60 in just 4.8 seconds. Given the advanced state of this prototype and the imminent release of its CLA platform-mate, we expect it won't be long before we see the new C-Class EV for real. Mercedes: Futuristic EQS Styling Is Hurting Sales

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the negativity surrounding the design of Mercedes' flagship electric car seems nearly universal. I must be in the minority because I don't think the EQS looks bad, especially in real life. Sure, it doesn't have the presence of an S-Class, but it was never intended to be a direct replacement, so perhaps we've been judging it too harshly. Be that as it may, the jellybean design, which prioritizes aerodynamic efficiency above all else, hasn't exactly won over buyers. Through the voice of its design boss, Mercedes has offered a few explanations as to why the EQS never really caught on. Gorden Wagener told Autocar the range-topping EV was launched '10 years too early,' suggesting it's simply too futuristic for its own good. However, the car has already been on the market for about four years, and we haven't seen much shift in public perception. People still aren't fans of the design language used across the EQ lineup. Wagener explains that the EQS failed to resonate with S-Class buyers because 'it's a completely different car," one that wasn't developed as a chauffeur-driven luxury sedan with a long hood like the conventional flagship. In hindsight, the man in charge of design at Mercedes suggests that the brand should have marketed the car differently, 'more like a futuristic CLS, S-Class Coupe or something like that.' Mercedes has already acknowledged that it has learned from its past mistakes. It's now unifying the design language across combustion and electric models. The next-generation S-Class will spawn a zero-emission version that's expected to replace the EQS. The egg-shaped styling is on the way out, although the shift won't happen overnight. The current-gen S-Class is slated for a facelift in 2026 , so its successor probably won't arrive until the end of the decade. In the meantime, Mercedes' decision to merge ICE and EV models is already becoming evident across its lineup. The new CLA looks nearly identical whether it's powered by gasoline or electricity. Furthermore, the upcoming electric GLC won't be badged as EQC, as the company is phasing out the separate EQ lineup . It's a clear sign that Mercedes is mirroring BMW's strategy by offering various powertrains under a single model family. The electric G-Class already follows that playbook, skipping the EQG name in favor of G580 with EQ Technology. In a previous interview with ABC News , Wagener defended the EQ design language, describing it as 'purposeful and very progressive.' He argued that the underwhelming demand for the EQS isn't necessarily a result of its styling but instead of how customers perceive EVs in general: 'One problem with EVs is customer perception. The customer sees it like an electronic device. Combustion cars are still being perceived like a Chrono watch, much more long-lasting.' Mercedes has already attempted to make the EQS resemble the S-Class by incorporating a 'front grille' reminiscent of the company's traditional crown jewel. A second facelift is in the works, with the three-pointed star motif integrated into the headlights to echo the new CLA. This upcoming refresh suggests the EQS will remain in the lineup for at least a few more years, which makes sense considering the electric S-Class isn't expected until around 2030. AMG Is About To Make Small EVs Hotter Than Ever

AMG CLA EQ Starts Showing Off The Autoblog spy photographers have caught the high-performance version of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan, and according to them, the smallest hot EV to come out of Affalterbach will be called the AMG CLA EQ. That's a far less awkward name than G 580 with EQ Technology, but most won't care as much about the name as they do about what it represents. And according to our sources, this hot subcompact will be a high-performance feast of technology. With these images showing a nearly-ready prototype with production bodywork, though, we have to address what we can see before discussing that which we can't. 0:04 / 0:09 2025 Audi S3 VS 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: Which one comes out on top? Watch More CLA Becomes A Baby AMG GT 4-Door As was the case with the regular electric CLA, the AMG version will closely resemble its combustion-powered sibling. Obvious exceptions in the CLA EQ's styling are evident in that the front bumper has only a lower intake grille, and the area where the Three-pointed Star will sit is a blank plate, while the rear diffuser trim has no cutouts for the traditional quartet of exhaust tips typically used to indicate AMG power. Nevertheless, the front end will look aggressive, with large lower side intakes in an AMG-specific bumper, while the fenders will each gain a piece of trim that will doubtless be badged. From the front three-quarter angle, this looks like a downsized AMG GT 4-Door, rather than just a hotted-up CLA, so well done to the designers. Although mismatched, the wheels are also clearly from the AMG warehouse, though it's possible that new designs will be offered when this EQ arrives. At the rear, a deployable adaptive spoiler (that our spies say the driver deactivated using a button, indicating a possible manual override feature) will give all who follow no doubt as to the performance credentials of this pocket rocket. We're calling it now – this will be one of the best-looking performance EVs on the market. Not Your Average Performance EV This vehicle was being unloaded at AMG's testing center at the Nürburgring, which means that it'll be taking to the track soon, if it hasn't already by the time this article reaches your eyes. However, the lack of perforations on the brake discs of this test mule suggests that this may be the warm AMG, not the hot one. A CLA EQ 35, if you will. For the cream of the crop, our spies say to expect a pair of electric motors – one per axle – to produce a combined 550 horsepower. Interestingly, the front motor is said to remain idle in most operating conditions to maximize range (which Mercedes reportedly expects to be around 700 kilometers, or 434 miles), but the hooligan in your head is likely already wondering how to use that system to perform ludicrous drifts. With this prototype very close to the finished product, we expect Mercedes to unleash the AMG CLA EQ before the end of the year, so it won't be a long wait.
