Geno Auriemma Named Finalist For Prestigious Award After National Championship Run

Geno Auriemma Named Finalist For Prestigious Award After National Championship Run originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At 71 years old, there aren't many awards Geno Auriemma hasn't won in his legendary career. But after capturing his 12th NCAA Tournament title this spring, the longtime UConn head coach is up for another prestigious honor, one he's never claimed before. Advertisement Auriemma, who has led the Huskies since 1985 and recorded 1,250 wins, is a finalist for the Best Record-Breaking Performance at the 2025 ESPYs. He's also an eight-time Naismith Coach of the Year, but this nomination marks a new recognition for his legacy. And he's not the only one from the UConn program to receive a nod. The UConn Women's Basketball account on X proudly shared the news on social media: 'We have some Huskies nominated for @ESPYS! Best Team: UConn Women's Basketball Best Record-Breaking Performance: Geno Auriemma Best WNBA Player: Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart' Last year's Best Record-Breaking Performance award went to Caitlin Clark, who broke Pete Maravich's all-time NCAA scoring record with 3,951 career points. Clark, now in her second WNBA season, is nominated again after becoming the league's single-game and single-season assist leader. Advertisement Other notable nominees for record-breaking feats include Kevin Durant, who became the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, and Alexander Ovechkin, who passed Wayne Gretzky for first place on the NHL's all-time goals list. Connecticut Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma hugs guard Paige Bueckers (5).Kirby Lee-Imagn Images In 2023, LeBron James took home the honor after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time leading scorer. The Huskies are also finalists for Best Team, joining a stacked list of champions that includes the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Liberty, Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Panthers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Two former UConn stars, Collier of the Minnesota Lynx and Stewart of the Liberty, are up for Best WNBA Player. Both helped lead their teams to the WNBA Finals last season and are joined by fellow finalists A'ja Wilson and Clark. Advertisement The 2025 ESPY Awards will air on July 16 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. In NCIS: Origins Season 2, Will Gibbs Go From ‘Probie' to Assertive Agent? EP Previews ‘Honest' Evolution Ahead

How long does it take for a probie to start blossoming into a truly special NIS agent? That is the question I and probably other NCIS: Origins viewers have, heading into Season 2 of the prequel spinoff (now airing Tuesdays at 9, this fall!). More from TVLine Casting News: Chicago Fire Adds On Call's Brandon Larracuente, Shane Gillis to Host ESPYS and More FBI: International Co-Creator Reacts to Cancellation, Believes It 'Had Nothing to Do With the Quality' of Spinoff Matlock Season 2 Video: Stars Preview 'Storms Colliding' for Dad-to-Be Billy, 'So Much Trouble' for Sarah NCIS: Origins, starring Austin Stowell as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, didn't put up 'huge' Nielsen numbers, but it was well-received for what it is — a wonderfully cast deep-dive into The Man Who Would One Day Become Boss' first days at NIS' Camp Pendleton office. (TVLine readers gave Season 1 an average grade of 'A.') Working under Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) and Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), alongside 'Randy' Randolf (Caleb Foote) and Vera Strickland (Diany Rodriguez), and with support from 'HSIC' Mary Jo Hayes (Tyla Abercrumbie), Gibbs kept a (very) low profile to start, and only recently started to more loudly voice his opinions. In fact, it was what Gibbs was up to outside of the team's Quonset hut that drew more attention, especially when his role in drug lord Pedro Hernandez's murder was confirmed for Franks and others. There's no hard and fast rule for when a 'probie' can shrug off that dismissive designation — it's arguably around a year, Google tells me? — but while Gibbs is, yes, the 'new guy' on the team, it only gets more and more disheartening to see him in so supportive a capacity, and never steering any investigations (outside of the whole Bugs/second sniper mystery that bookended Season 1). Gibbs will one day run the D.C. office, very effectively and for a long while, so I hope to see sparks of that leadership potential 'flicker' more and more occasionally in NCIS: Origins Season 2. That is why I asked co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal if Gibbs will in fact 'be a bit more active, speak up more, and have a say in investigations' during the show's sophomore run. 'We're inching our way there, definitely, in a way that we think is honest for the character,' North told me. 'I mean, just take the fact that in Season 1, we know Gibbs' gut was churning a little bit about Bugs and thinking, 'Maybe there's more to this story?'' North reminded. 'But Gibbs didn't go down that path, he didn't gnaw at Franks and say, 'Hey, my gut…' — and he learned in the end he was right. Those are all stepping stones toward becoming the Gibbs that we met in 2003.' What do you think of the bosses' 'honest' approach to Gibbs' evolution? Can you/we be patient a bit longer, to get more vivid hints of the D.C. office's oneday 'Boss'? Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? Shane Gillis to host ESPY Awards 2025: Date, time, where to watch and more

The 2025 ESPY Awards are all set to take place in a few weeks from now and the organisers have roped in actor-comedian Shane Gillis as the host. Celebrating the past year in sports, the awards show is scheduled for July 16 at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA Today reported. File photo of Shane Gillis(AP) In a statement, Gillis said he is excited to be a part of the ESPYS this year. 'I like sports so this should be a good time,' he added. Gillis will be the first non-athlete to have signed on to host the event since 2021, when actor Anthony Mackie did the honour. The creator and star of the popular Netflix show Tires has been dubbed an avid sports fan. ESPN vice president and ESPYS executive producer Craig Lazarus said Gillis is not only counted among the top comedians in today's time, but is also a 'huge sports fan,' making him an 'easy choice' to host the event. Gillis co-hosts Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast with fellow comedian Matt McCusker and has even appeared in a Super Bowl ad alongside Peyton Manning and Post Malone. He was earlier recruited by the Army and is a former walk-on at Elon University. Besides this, Gillis is an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish team in college football. Earlier, Shane Gillis appeared as the celebrity guest picker on 'College GameDay' ahead of the College Football Playoff first-round game between Notre Dame and Indiana in December last year. During his appearance, he took a slight dig at show analyst Nick Saban, who is the former coach of Alabama. Gillis said the Fighting Irish had a chance at winning since athletes could be paid. 2025 ESPY Awards: Schedule The awards show will take place at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles from 8 PM ET on Wednesday, July 16. It will be aired live on ABC, while fans can live stream it on ESPN+. Gillis will host the 33rd ESPY Awards. In the past, the award show has been hosted by Serena Williams, Stephen Curry, John Cena, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L Jackson, and Anthony Mackie, among others. FAQs: 1. Will Shane Gillis host the ESPY Awards for the first time? Yes. This will be Gillis' maiden stint as the host of the awards show. 2. Who has previously hosted the event? Serena Williams, John Cena and Samuel L Jackson, among others, have previously served as the host. 3. Why do ESPY Awards take place? The annual show celebrates the past year in sports.
