Chelsea have ALREADY paid off Liam Delap transfer fee with Club World Cup earnings alone
LIAM DELAP is off the mark - after putting Chelsea in the black. Or at least in terms of the striker's £30million arrival from Ipswich just three weeks ago. 3 3 Delap angled his first goal for the Blues as a 3-0 win over ES Tunis booked a place in the Club World Cup knockout stages. And reaching the last 16 means Chelsea have already earned £33.8m from the controversial tournament. That more than covers the 22-year-old's transfer fee. (Video): Chelsea TV's hilarious reaction to Liam Delap's first goal for Blues
Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over ES Tunis last night in the Club World Cup, a satisfying return to form after a worrying defeat and a result that set up a second round game against Benfica in Charlotte. There were good performances all round, especially considering this was the most rotated team we've played in the tournament so far. Particularly notable was the showing from Liam Delap. Delap shines with first Blues goal Liam Delap in action against ES Tunis.(Photo by) Advertisement The striker was handed the chance to play an important role in the game by Nicolas Jackson's suspension, and he did superbly well, especially when he scored his first goal for the club in first half stoppage time. Chelsea were given a free kick but chose to play advantage, something which Enzo Fernandez used cleverly as he flicked the ball through to Delap just as the Tunis defenders stopped for a second. The striker still had a lot to do, with several defenders between him and the goal. He dealt with them all superbly. The first simply bounced off his large frame, with the striker using his body superbly to shield the ball as he brought it down. He then still had a ways to go, but a lovely fake shot on the left foot followed by a quick finish on the right saw off the second incoming defender and left the keeper rooted. Chelsea commentators go mad for Delap first strike It was pure striking artistry and on Chelsea TV the commentators went mad for it. Advertisement 'OHHHH WHAT A GOAL! WHAT A GOAL BOY!' shouted Jason Cundy on Chelsea TV. Let's hope this is the first of many top reactions we get from them. It was not easy and, until we scored the first goal, it was difficult to break their defensive line down. "We were quite patient, and when we scored the first goal the game became a little more open and a little easier for us. Advertisement "It's impossible not to rotate players because playing every three days in these conditions means it's not possible for them to play every game. The ones who played were good and we've given some rest to many players. "It's important to recover the energy and try to win the next game. On Chelsea's last-16 opponents Benfica, Maresca added: "We know Benfica is a top club, with a top manager and top players. "It's going to be tough, but from 32 we are now into the round of 16 - and our next target is to go into the quarter-finals."

Chelsea: Wesley Fofana will not be added to Blues' Club World Cup squad, Enzo Maresca confirms
Moving on: Enzo Maresca's face Benfica in the Club World Cup round of 16 (Chelsea FC via Getty Images) Enzo Maresca confirmed that Wesley Fofana will not be added to Chelsea's Club World Cup squad after the injured defender joined up with the team camp. The Blues secured their progression to the knockout stages of the summer tournament in the small hours of Wednesday morning, beating ES Tunis 3-0 in Philadelphia. Advertisement Maresca now has the option to add two new players to his squad, but confirmed that Fofana, who was limited to just 14 appearances last season through injury, is not yet ready to play. "Wesley is here because he is trying to be with us and recover with us,' the Italian explained. 'There is no chance he can be with us in the squad. At the moment, there is no plan to bring other players.' Fofana signed to Chelsea for a reported £70million in 2022, but his career in West London has been limited by repeated hamstring injuries. He has played for the club just 34 times. Chelsea's group stage campaign was not without its flaws - the Blues' progression was in doubt after they lost to Flamengo last week - and Maresca was relieved to be moving on. Advertisement He continued: 'Especially after the defeat it was important to bounce back and win, and we won the game and can start to think about the next one. 'It was very important to be patient, and then when we found the goal the game was a little bit more open. 'We are happy for all the players, especially the ones who were for a long time without minutes. 'It's impossible not to rotate players because playing every three days in these conditions means it's not possible for them to play every game.' After Atletico Madrid were sent home early on Monday, Maresca added that Chelsea should be proud to progress in the competition.
