Will Donald Trump play role in NJ governor election? Here's what voters think
New Jersey voters are excited about selecting a governor. But according to a recent poll, they're far more excited about one candidate. Democratic nominee for New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill is seen as more trustworthy to handle issues New Jersey is dealing with, according to a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll. That doesn't mean the race is over, but the poll said 51% of voters would side with Sherrill and 31% would side with Ciattarelli. Five percent say they would vote for someone else, while 13% are undecided. 'Early polling on the governor's race should serve as a baseline or a barometer of how voters are feeling in the moment – not as some crystal ball predicting the future four months from now,' said Ashley Koning, an assistant research professor and director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. 'A lot can happen between now and November, and we know this gap will very likely narrow in the next several months. We only need to look back to 2021 to see how much a race can change throughout a cycle. Add to this an intense national political landscape that will, once again, surely play a role in the governor's race here at home. Come November, what will matter is who actually turns out to vote.' The vote could come down to President Donald Trump. More than half surveyed (52%) said Trump is a major factor on who they are voting for, while 18% say he's a minor factor. The other 30% said he isn't a factor. Those backing Sherrill were more likely to say Trump is a major factory, with 7%t of those backing the Democrat said Trump is a major factor. Almost half of independents (4%) say Trump is a major factor, and 20% say he's a minor one. 'Trump's influence appears to be more of a benefit to Sherrill right now, given key groups more likely to support her are also more likely to claim the president is a factor in their vote choice, while those more supportive of Ciattarelli do not,' Koning said. 'While Trump's endorsement may have helped in the primaries, these numbers are an early sign that the endorsement may play differently when it comes to the general.' How 6 Democrats in a Consequential Governor's Race Are Vying to Be Heard
The race for governor of New Jersey features the largest field in decades. The candidates have never been more accomplished or better funded. The results could be a bellwether for midterm congressional elections. But first, the candidates must figure out how to make themselves heard — over each other and amid a backdrop of unmatched upheaval in Washington. That's a particular challenge for the Democratic contenders, who include two members of Congress, two big-city mayors and two union leaders. 'To have six Democrats, all who could pretty legitimately have a chance — that's really rare,' said Kristoffer Shields, director of the Eagleton Center on the American Governor at Rutgers University.
