Authorities obtain search warrant related to explosion that killed 3 deputies at LA County facility
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) homicide detectives evacuated a Santa Monica complex and are in the process of obtaining a search warrant in relation to the devastating explosion Friday morning that left multiple deputies dead at the agency's Special Enforcement Bureau in East Los Angeles. The blast, which happened at the Biscailuz Training Facility just after 7:30 a.m., killed three deputies assigned to the arson explosives detail. The fallen deputies had a combined 74 years of service, according to L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna. No other injuries were reported, and there is no threat to the community, according to Luna. LASD said homicide detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the Santa Monica location and "out of the abundance of caution," the LAPD bomb squad, L.A. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Los Angeles will search the location for any potential explosive materials. "At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today's critical incident," officials wrote in a statement to Fox Digital. "Santa Monica PD is assisting the Sheriff's Department in this incident and have evacuated the residents in the complex. They are in the process of locating a shelter for displaced residents." The FBI and ATF are investigating the "post-blast portion" of the incident, according to Luna. The tragedy marked the largest loss of life within the department since 1857. "If you're familiar with our Special Enforcement Bureau, they're the best of the best. The individuals who work on our arson explosives detail have years of training," Luna said. "They average about 1,100 [calls] per year, so these aren't people who don't do this very often. They are fantastic experts, and unfortunately, I lost three of them today. … There are other law enforcement agencies who have bomb techs, not only around the country, around the world, that want to know what happened here. We want to make sure that we don't repeat this." "I just spoke to @USAttyEssayli about what appears to be a horrific incident that killed at least three at a law enforcement training facility in Los Angeles," Bondi wrote. "Our federal agents are at the scene and we are working to learn more. Please pray for the families of the sheriff's deputies killed." Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed DHS is working with state and federal law enforcement in relation to the incident. California Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed and offered full state assistance to the sheriff's office, according to a statement. Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott confirmed LAFD's arson and ATF members are assisting with the investigation. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass offered the city's support in an X post. "The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of those impacted by this blast," Bass wrote. California Sheriff Says Nearly A Dozen Deputies Injured In Anti-ice Riots Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also weighed in on social media, offering his family's prayers. "Any loss of life in law enforcement is a sad and difficult circumstance," Kemp wrote in a post. Montebello man shouts "I am American" while immigration agents detain him
A face-to-face encounter with federal immigration agents has left Montebello man Brian Gavidia shaken and unable to sleep at night. Gavida said he was working at a tow yard on W. Olympic Boulevard in Montebello when he heard immigration agents were outside. An agent approached him when he stepped outside. Gavida said he told the officers he was an American citizen three times before they tried to detain him. "East Los Angeles born and raised, ma'am," he recalled telling an agent. "I am American. I stated I was American. He still attacked me. We are not safe, guys, not safe in America today." Gavida said the agent asked him what city and hospital he was born in before throwing him into a gate and twisting his arm. "I said, 'I don't know.' And because I didn't know, he threw me to the gate and he twisted my arm," Gavida said. "I said, 'Brother, I am American. You are twisting my arm.'" During the encounter, he said his friend, who is also an American citizen, was rough-handled by federal agents. "I see my friend state that he is an American," Gavidia said. "He gets slammed to the floor. He is bleeding from his forehead. I want to jump in and defend my friend. ICE agent looks at me with his AR-15. I can't win that battle." Gavidia said the agent took both his phone and Real ID and only let him go because his friend started filming. "I couldn't sleep last night," he said. "Let me tell you the truth: He took my ID, he took my phone. He never gave me back my ID. Is this guy going to come and pick me up at 2 or 3 a.m. I don't know." Gavidia said he won't be silenced about what he calls blatant mistreatment. "It doesn't make me happy to have my face out here like this," he said. "I don't want to be in this position. I don't want to have my face out here like this, but I have to. My people are getting attacked, and yeah I'm American, but I'm Latino as well." U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to CBS News Los Angeles' request for comment.
