DARJEELING: A safety audit was carried out on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) by a team of senior officials from Eastern Railway, led by SAG-level officers, to evaluate safety protocols, operational procedures, and to promote knowledge sharing between railways. DHR Director Rishav Choudhary stated that the audit began with a detailed inspection of Mahanadi Railway Station, followed by a line check between Mahanadi and Kurseong, focusing on key safety-related infrastructure along the historic route. 'The team visited the DHR Headquarters in Kurseong, where they were briefed on current heritage conservation efforts alongside ongoing safety upgrades. The presentation highlighted the unique challenges of operating a UNESCO World Heritage railway, stressing the need to maintain both safety and heritage values,' said Choudhary. Bhagalpur: The Eastern Railway (ER) has made preparations for the month-long Shravani Mela that is scheduled to start on July 11. The ER has made arrangements of special trains so that pilgrims reach Sultanganj railway station. The ER has also directed additional stoppages at Sultanganj railway station for the existing mail and express trains running on the Sahibganj-Bhagalpur-Jamalpur railway section under the Malda railway division of ER during the Shravani Mela. During the Shravani Mela, approximately 55 to 60 lakh pilgrims visit Sultanganj. It is expected that the number will increase this year. Divisional railway manager (DRM), Malda Division of ER, Manish Kumar Gupta, said during the Shravani Mela pilgrims prefer to take the railway route to reach Sultanganj. He said the special train (03480/03479) Jamalpur-Sultanganj-Jamalpur Shravani Mela passenger special will run from July 11 to Aug 9, 2025, to facilitate movement of the pilgrims. The Mela special train (03480) will leave Jamalpur at 9.05am to reach Sultanganj at 10.45am, besides Sultanganj-Jamalpur Shravani Mela passenger special (03479) will leave Sultanganj at 11.15am to reach Jamalpur at 12.40pm on the same day. The DRM added that the special train will stop at all stations between Jamalpur and Sultanganj. Another special train, Jamalpur-Deoghar-Jamalpur Shravani Mela passenger special (03442/03441) will run every Sunday between July 13 and Aug 10. Similarly, Deoghar-Godda-Deoghar Shravani Mela passenger special (03444/03443) will run every Sunday between July 13 and Aug 10. The Deoghar-Godda Shravani Mela passenger special (03444) will leave Deoghar at 10.45am to reach Godda at 12.40pm, and the Godda-Deoghar Shravani Mela passenger special (03443) will leave Godda at 1.15pm to reach Deoghar at 3.05pm on the same day.

Eastern Railway Announces Introduction Of AC Suburban Services At Affordable Cost

To fulfil the growing requirements of suburban passengers, Eastern Railway is preparing to run Air Conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (AC EMU) locals soon, Eastern Railway said in a press release. One such AC EMU train constructed in the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, has already arrived in the Eastern Railway and has been sent to Sealdah Division for testing & trial run. Another AC EMU rake will also shortly arrive in the Eastern Railway jurisdiction. On the basis of the present utilisation pattern, it has been decided that the new AC EMU train that is sent to Sealdah Division will run on the Sealdah - Ranaghat route. The Indian Railways has rationalised the fare of AC EMU Suburban train services to bring it to the affordable limit of the commuters. The single journey suburban base fare of AC EMU trains will be only Rs 29 for a journey upto 10 km & base fare of Rs 37 for journey distance between 11 km to 15 km, and so on. Charges for corresponding monthly season ticket (MST) will be Rs 590 and Rs 780, respectively, and so on. The salient technical features of these AC EMU rakes are as follows: "All the coaches of these trains will be fully Air-Conditioned. The coaches are made of Stainless steel bodies with straight side walls. All the 12 coaches of the rake are end-to-end connected by sealed wider vestibule gangways. The coaches have been provided with better air circulation inside the coaches to give the feeling of freshness. It has more standing space and includes a vestibule area. Passengers can also travel inside the train from one coach to another easily through vestibules," the press release said. All the AC EMU coaches have 04 electrically operated double-leaf automatic sliding doors on each side. The coaches have wide and large double-sealed glass windows providing a panoramic view. 3 seater stainless steel seats are provided in all the coaches. The total seating capacity of the rake is approximately 1100. All the coaches are covered by CCTV surveillance. Wear-resistant rubber floor top, Aluminium extruded modular luggage rack & GPS-based LED displays for passenger information and announcement system are provided in each coach of the rake to enhance passenger amenity and comfort. The doors of the train will open only after arriving at stations and will close before departing from the stations and remain closed while on run for safety reasons. The control of the door will remain with the Driver/Guard, who will operate the doors of the train compartments. The new AC EMU trains, which arrive in the Sealdah Division, will surely satisfy the expectations of the passengers and initiate a new era of a cosy journey experience at a very affordable price.

The train will operate on the Sealdah-Ranaghat section, and the minimum fare will be Rs 29, Eastern Railway officials told TOI. "Based on the current utilisation pattern, it has been decided that the new AC EMU train sent to the Sealdah division will run on the Sealdah-Ranaghat route. Indian Railways rationalised the fare of AC EMU suburban train services so that most commuters can afford it. A single journey suburban base fare is only Rs 29 for the first 10 km. The base fare is Rs 37 for 11 km to 15 km and so on. A monthly season ticket (MST) will cost Rs 590 and Rs 780 respectively," ER officials said. The first AC rake, which was due to arrive in May, is late by a few weeks, but passengers agreed that the introduction of AC services in the suburban rail system would revolutionise the city's transportation scene. The new rake will undergo trials before being commissioned. "We need to customise the rake first. Jajpur: The 70th All-India Kabaddi tournament will be held at Khanditar village in Jajpur district from June 13 to 16. The Jajpur Kabaddi Association (JKA) is organising the National Kabaddi tournament at its own stadium at Khanditar like every year. The men's and women's National Kabaddi tournament will be played both in day and night. Addressing a press conference on Monday, JKA working president Pradeep Sethy said a total of 32 teams, including 22 men's and 10 women's teams, from across the country will participate in the tournament. National men's teams such as Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), Bhopal, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), South Eastern Railway, Eastern Railway, Kolkata Police, Chhattisgarh State team, Agra (Uttar Pradesh), JDU Academy (New Delhi), Nizampur (New Delhi), Gurgaon and Jind (Haryana), Kishore Club, Sree Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, Pipili, are participating, he said. In women's category, Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway, Ashok Sangh (Kolkata), Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and State teams Cuttack, Kishore Club, Bhubaneswar, KIIT University, Kalinga Kabaddi Academy and JKA are participating, he added. All the matches will be conducted on two synthetic surface mat courts and flood lights have been installed for night matches.
