Arsenal add Eberechi Eze to transfer shortlist as Tottenham battle looms

In demand: Eberechi Eze is attracting interest from Arsenal and Tottenham after a fine season at Crystal Palace (Getty Images) Arsenal have added Eberechi Eze to their list of transfer targets, joining Tottenham in the race for the Crystal Palace star. Arsenal are tracking a number of versatile attackers this summer as they look to sign a wide player able to provide competition for Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, and Standard Sport understands that Eze has been added to the list. Advertisement As well as Eze, the Gunners' hierarchy are also tracking Rodrygo at Real Madrid and Newcastle's Anthony Gordon. Eze also remains of interest to long-time admirers Spurs, who have a close relationship with - and a number of key players signed to - Eze's agency, CAA Base. He could leave Crystal Palace this summer with his contract at Selhurst Park said to contain a £68million release clause, payable in three instalments. Eze, who turns 27 on Sunday, finished the season in superb form, following up his first international goal for England against Latvia in March by scoring nine times in Palace's last 13 games of the campaign, including the match-winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City as the Eagles lifted their first-ever major trophy at Wembley. Advertisement Interest from Arsenal is pertinent given that Eze was part of their prestigious Hale End Academy until being released at the age of 13. Arsenal will announce the signing of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea in the coming days. The Gunners are paying £5m to sign the Spaniard from their London rivals. He will become their new second-choice goalkeeper after leaving the Blues, where he knew he was not part of the club's plans moving forward. There is also an agreement in place for Arsenal to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard for an initial £10m plus up to £5m in add-ons. The midfielder was keen to join Arsenal as soon as he heard of their interest and is set to undergo a medical. His arrival would follow the departure of Jorginho and anticipated exit of Thomas Partey as a free agent. Both operate in the same position as Norgaard.

Why Arsenal want Eberechi Eze and what 'game-breaker' deal could mean for Martin Odegaard

Arsenal have held talks over a move for Eberechi Eze, who scored the winner for the Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final (The FA via Getty Images) When Arsenal released Eberechi Eze from their academy at the age of 13, he spent a week in his bedroom, inconsolable. Growing up in south London, it was Eze's dream to play for Arsenal. Being told his time with the club was over left him devastated. Advertisement 'I remember crying in my room for a solid week, my mum telling me that it's going to be OK but not being able to get over it,' Eze told The Independent in 2020. 'Then I went to Fulham and I was finally starting to enjoy my football again. 'We played Arsenal a few months later but, when I went over to shake the academy manager's hand, I started welling up. All the feelings came back.' After bouncing around clubs during his youth career, Eze has flourished and now he could finally realise his childhood ambition of playing for Arsenal. Eze is coming off the back of a brilliant season for Crystal Palace (Getty Images) Standard Sport reported last week how the Gunners have added Eze to their shortlist of attacking targets this summer, as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad for another title challenge. Advertisement A move for Eze would appeal to Arsenal supporters - partly because of the 27-year-old's connection to the club, but also because of what he would bring to the side. Martin Odegaard has had to shoulder the burden of being Arsenal's chief playmaker, and Eze would elevate that. There is also the exciting prospect of the pair playing together as two No8s in midfield, which could prove effective in games where Arsenal are dominating possession but struggling to break an opponent down. A criticism of Arteta's teams is that the attack can sometimes be too structured. Eze would change that, with his ability to play off the cuff and create something out of nothing - qualities that Arsenal lack. He is a game-breaker. Advertisement Eze is coming off the back of a brilliant season with Crystal Palace, where his output rivalled those in the Arsenal squad. He scored eight Premier League goals, with Kai Havertz the only Arsenal player to better that tally. Eze also had eight assists in the league, with Bukayo Saka the only Arsenal player to record more. Martin Odegaard could benefit if Arsenal sign Eze (AFP via Getty Images) Eze and Saka created the same number of chances, with the Palace playmaker just five short of Odegaard - who was Arsenal's best performer in that area. No one in the Arsenal squad had a higher xG in the Premier League than Eze, who was one of only 20 players in the whole top-flight to reach double figures for that metric. Advertisement The flamboyant playing style of Eze makes him appear to be a different profile of player to the ones Arteta has most recently preferred in the No8 position, such as Declan Rice, Havertz and Mikel Merino. But Eze is more of an 'Arteta player' than meets the eye. Arteta is a big fan of players who have proven they can thrive in the Premier League, and he values versatility too. Eze ticks both those boxes and, while he would most suit playing as a No8 in this Arsenal team, he could also be used on the left flank or even up top as a second striker. Another big requirement for Arteta is that players work off the ball, and Eze is surprisingly effective in that department. Advertisement He won 157 ground duels in the Premier League last season - 13 more than anyone in the Arsenal squad managed. In fact, Eze ranked 21st in the whole Premier League when it came to ground duels won. It is a similar story when it comes to possessions won, with Rice and William Saliba the only Arsenal players to better Eze's tally of 146. Arsenal signed Merino last summer because he was a 'duel monster' and, while it would be wrong to label Eze in the same way, he certainly doesn't shirk his defensive duties. Instead, they form part of what makes him such an attractive signing for Arsenal.

Liverpool in 'advanced talks' with Marc Guehi as new transfer priority

Liverpool have reportedly entered into 'advanced talks' with Marc Guehi. The Reds have been strongly linked with the Crystal Palace captain over recent weeks as they continue to comprehensively upgrade all areas of their squad in preparation for next season's Premier League title defence under Arne Slot. Advertisement Reports last month stated that Liverpool were expected to make a 'significant' offer for Guehi, who has entered into the final 12 months of his contract at Selhurst Park with no agreement reached over an extension. Now Sky Germany claim that the England defender has vaulted to the top of the transfer shortlist at Anfield, with advanced talks taking place between club and player as Liverpool press ahead with their latest potential high-profile signing of a busy summer. It remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached with Palace, who will be reluctant to lose their influential, FA Cup-winning skipper having rejected multiple bids from Newcastle in the past but also want to avoid losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires. Palace are currently still awaiting UEFA's delayed ruling on if they will be permitted entry into next season's Europa League, with mounting speculation over Arsenal and Tottenham moving for Wembley hero Eberechi Eze, who has a £68million release clause. Advertisement Reports from Portugal on Tuesday stated that the Eagles were closing in on a €55m (£47.1m) deal for Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande, who could be seen as Guehi's potential replacement. Guehi - also linked with Arsenal and Chelsea - would provide strong competition and depth in central defence for Liverpool alongside captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, with Joe Gomez having struggled with injury last season and Jarell Quansah expected to move in the opposite direction to Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong by completing a switch to Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen soon. Liverpool have already strengthened their defence with the £40m arrival of Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, with goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili and Armin Pecsi also signed so far this summer. In addition to Guehi, the Reds now look to be turning their attentions towards a new top-level striker, with Darwin Nunez believed to be in talks over joining reigning Serie A champions Napoli. It was reported on Monday that Liverpool had a three-man shortlist comprised of Newcastle's prolific frontman Alexander Isak, Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike and Victor Osimhen, the Napoli forward who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray.
