Maharashtra medical admissions: 10% EWS reservation in private medical colleges, no increase in total intake

As Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has declared commencement of admissions for medical undergraduate (UG) courses in state, the information brochure indicates implementation of 10 per cent Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation in private medical colleges, which is feared to drastically reduce the number of open seats as there is no increase in intake to accommodate this reservation. The information brochure, released on Wednesday, under annexure on constitutional reservation, mentions EWS reservation in private medical colleges. Under the subhead of EWS category reservation, it states, 'In Government /Government Aided/ Corporation / Private Unaided Institutions (excluding Minority Institutions), 10% of the available seats under State Quota shall be reserved for candidates belonging to EWS category.' But many have highlighted a concern that this will drastically reduce the seats available for open-merit, in private medical colleges, as there is no increase in total intake. A parent representative, Sudha Shenoy, said, 'When EWS reservation was implemented in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in 2019, all were granted one-time increase in the intake capacity in open-merit seats to accommodate 10 per cent reservation for EWS, so that there is no impact on the number of seats available under general category, which caters to everyone. Without any increase in intake, out of 3000 odd seats available in open-merit at private medical colleges, close to 300 will be used to accommodate EWS reservation. This is a considerable reduction in the number of seats available for open-merit.' Shenoy also pointed out that students under EWS category are already allowed fee-benefit. 'Then why was there a need to introduce this reservation now?' she questioned. Another parent representative, Brijesh Sutaria pointed out that increase in intake is only National Medical Council's (NMC) prerogative. 'Whereas admissions to private medical colleges are by state admission regulatory bodies. The state will have to approach NMC seeking a one-time increase in seats. Otherwise, the number of open-merit seats will be reduced considerably.' A trustee of a private medical college however highlighted that students who have an annual family income of less than Rs 8 lakh are already getting the EWS fee-benefit from the government, wherein the government reimburses 50 percent of total fees for boys and 100 percent fee for girls since last year. 'Then it becomes unclear to understand the objective behind bringing separate reservation,' said the trustee. Additionally, this year onwards, the Maharashtra government has implemented a strict definition of NRI candidates. Now, only those candidates who themselves or whose parents are NRIs can apply under the NRI quota, or if their legal guardian is an NRI. This is in contrast to the earlier practice where any NRI family member could endorse a sponsorship to pay the fees. Welcoming the move, Muzaffar Khan, medical education counsellor, said, 'This will put an end to fraudulent admissions taking place under NRI quota. Furthermore, if any seats remain vacant, they will be made open for Indians. Instead of 5X fees charged for NRI students, if made available to Indians, fees will be only 3X.'

Next Vice President? Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Picks THIS OBC Leader From BJP

HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday accused the BJP of stalling 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) by using Muslim community as an excuse. He alleged that the leaders of saffron party were playing politics of sentiment by stating that they would back 42 percent quota for BCs if Muslims are removed from the list of BCs. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, he clarified that Muslims are being extended the benefits of reservation on the basis of their backwardness. He dared BJP to scrap reservation for Muslims in the states ruled by it or its allies. He asked why the BJP was not scrapping Muslim quota in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. He alleged that BJP is adopting double standards on the issue of Muslim reservation and trying to derive political mileage by whipping up passions. 'You can't have one justice for Telangana and another justice for other states,' he remarked. He warned that if BJP oppose Backward Class reservation, the party will be wiped out from Telangana. Revanth Reddy along with some state ministers and Congress leaders arrived in the national capital to mobilise support of various parties for including two state laws for 42 per cent Backward Class reservation in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution. The Chief Minister recalled that the state legislature passed two Bills for 42 per cent quota for BCs in education, employment and public life and sent the same to the Centre for including in the 9th Schedule. Revanth Reddy also pointed out that the local body elections have to be conducted in the state by September as per the direction of the High Court. 'If 42 percent seats in local bodies are to be reserved for the BCs, the Centre will have to give its approval,' he said. The Chief Minister said there was no justification in the argument that total reservations should not cross 50 per cent. He claimed that the Centre crossed this limit long back with 10 per cent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The Chief Minister also demanded that a leader from Telangana should be made the Vice-President of India. Revanth Reddy said Bandaru Dattatreya, whose tenure as Haryana Governor has just ended, should be made Vice-President. He alleged that since Dattatreya is an OBC leader he was sidelined to make G. Kishan Reddy the union minister. He said similarly Bandi Sanjay was removed as state BJP president and a Brahmin was recently appointed as the state BJP chief.

Over 80,000 candidates accept DUs UG seats in 1st round; fee deadline July 23

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) More than 80,000 candidates have accepted undergraduate seats in the first round of Delhi University's (DU) seat allocation, according to official data released by the university on Monday evening. According to the figures from the Common Seat Allocation System-Undergraduate (CSAS-UG) portal, 80,015 candidates accepted their allocated seats as of 7 pm on July 21. Of them, 31,088 have been approved by college principals and 17,702 have completed fee payment. This year, the university has made 93,166 allocations against 71,624 seats across 69 colleges and 79 undergraduate programmes, indicating that internal movement and reallocations are expected in the subsequent rounds. 'More than 93,000 allocations have been done based on the pattern and requirement of previous years, as many students shuffle their seats from one college to another," a senior DU official told PTI. The CSAS-UG system, which forms the basis of these allocations, factors in CUET-UG scores, candidate preferences and reservation norms. The allocations span various categories, including Unreserved (UR), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Sikh Minority, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Kashmiri Migrants, Single Girl Child and Orphan candidates. Under the Single Girl Child category, 1,325 allocations were made, while 259 orphan candidates — 127 females and 132 males — secured seats in the first round. Candidates had until 4:59 pm on July 21 to accept their seats. College-level verification and approval will continue until July 22, with the last date for fee payment set for July 23. In a step towards transparency, the university has allowed candidates to view the minimum allocation scores and ranks for each programme and college. These details are accessible through their dashboards and will also be published on the official admission website. Meanwhile, allocations for performance-based programmes, such as Hindustani Music, Karnataka Music, Percussion Music, Physical Education and Fine Arts, will be conducted in the third round. Candidates seeking admission in these categories have been advised to check the trial schedules on the respective college or department websites. The second round of seat allocation is scheduled to be announced at 5 pm on July 28. The academic session for first-year students will commence on August 1.
