Gendarmes and activists clash in French motorway protest
Several hundred demonstrators, including around 50 who were masked and dressed in black, were involved in the confrontation, some throwing stones as gendarmes fired tear gas. About a thousand activists had gathered at a chateau near the site of construction work on the A69 Toulouse-Castres motorway to show their opposition to the project. The meeting went ahead despite having been banned by the local Tarn prefecture because of "serious violence" at previous protests. The manor house's owner had agreed to the gathering there, on condition it was peaceful. Some protesters however used tree trunks, branches and wooden pallets to block the main road running alongside the A69 worksite, a route that had already been closed off to traffic. AFP journalists saw them set bushes on fire, tear up a traffic sign and try to get on to the motorway site as they clashed with the gendarmes. (Photo by Ed JONES / AFP) 'Let nothing pass' Before the protest, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau had warned on X that "we will let nothing pass". He added: "When, in the name of ecology, dozens of ultra-left masked and dangerous activist protesters... who only want to destroy or attack cops, are mobilised, then we have shifted into sedition and ultra-violence." The prefecture posted photos on X of items seized from the protesters, including axes, a pick and a crowbar. In February, an administrative court in Toulouse ordered a halt to work on the project, ruling there was no major pressing public interest that justified the damage to the environment. That ruling was hailed as a victory by the motorway's opponents. Advertisement But it triggered a number of initiatives by the project's backers, in particular a proposed law aimed at granting the required environmental approval retroactively. That is expected to become law in the next few days, following a final parliamentary vote. At the end of May, the Toulouse administrative court of appeal ruled that work on the motorway could continue ahead of a more detailed examination of the case set for the end of the year.

What's Happening With RTX Stock?
This photograph shows the Pratt and Whitney logo displayed on an engine on a production line of the ... More regional aircraft manufacturer ATR, in Toulouse, on February 12, 2025. (Photo by Ed JONES / AFP) (Photo by ED JONES/AFP via Getty Images) RTX (NYSE: RTX) recently released its fiscal first-quarter results, revealing strong financial performance. The company reported earnings per share of $1.47 on revenues of $20.31 billion. These figures represent a 5% year-over-year increase in sales and a substantial 10% growth in earnings. Notably, RTX surpassed Wall Street's expectations, which had anticipated earnings of $1.37 per share on revenues of $19.96 billion. Despite this positive earnings report and exceeding analyst forecasts, RTX's stock experienced a significant 10% drop on Tuesday, April 22nd. This decline can be partially attributed to the anticipated $850 million impact of tariffs on the company's financials this year. These tariffs include the 10% levies recently imposed by the Trump administration, as well as higher duties on goods from countries like China. The company's backlog remains robust at $217 billion, with $125 billion in commercial orders and $92 billion in defense contracts. While investors have recently expressed concerns regarding the impact of tariffs, there is a potential positive development. President Trump recently indicated that tariffs on China are expected to decrease significantly, which could positively influence overall market sentiment and, consequently, RTX's stock performance. Now, of course, individual stocks are more volatile than a portfolio – and in this environment if you seek upside with less volatility than a single stock, consider the High-Quality portfolio, which has outperformed the S&P 500 and achieved returns greater than 91% since inception. RTX stock currently trades at around $115, representing a price-to-earnings ratio of 20x trailing earnings. This valuation exceeds its three-year average P/E ratio of 19x. The expanded valuation multiple can be partially justified by: However, these positive factors appear largely priced into the current stock value. While yesterday's stock decline has created some potential upside opportunity, we believe that this upside remains limited at current levels. The Trump administration's assertive policy initiatives have significantly heightened geopolitical uncertainty, creating a more complex risk landscape for RTX. Specific challenges include: These macroeconomic uncertainties and trade tensions create an unfavorable operating environment for RTX, potentially affecting its global operations and financial performance. While RTX stock looks like it has limited upside, investing in a single stock can be risky. On the other hand, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio, with a collection of 30 stocks, has a track record of comfortably outperforming the S&P 500 over the last 4-year period. Why is that? As a group, HQ Portfolio stocks provided better returns with less risk versus the benchmark index; less of a roller-coaster ride as evident in HQ Portfolio performance metrics.
