Venom Rumor Hints at Next Movie After Tom Hardy Trilogy

A new rumor suggests Sony is expanding its Marvel animation slate with a major project centered on Venom. Reports indicate that the studio is developing an animated Venom movie, marking a potential new direction following its live-action trilogy. A new scoop posted by user @MyTimeToShineHello claims, 'Sony is currently developing an animated Venom film.' The post, labeled as a Marvel-Sony scoop, quickly gained attention across social media platforms as fans speculated on the future of the Lethal Protector. This follows earlier reports from March 2024 that Sony Pictures Animation was working on a Venom project with Seth Rogen reportedly attached as both writer and producer. The information was shared by scooper @CanWeGetToast (via Rogen's prior experience with adult-themed comic book content includes roles on Preacher, The Boys, Invincible, and The Boys Presents: Diabolical. The reports state that Sony plans to make the animated Venom project R-rated. This rating aligns with Rogen's previous work and marks a shift from the PG-13 tone of the live-action Venom trilogy. 'Honestly, probably fear,' Rogen said in a 2023 Polygon interview when asked why he had avoided Marvel or DC projects. He added, 'It's mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place…we're control freaks!' Sony has not made any official announcements regarding this animated Venom film. Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), with Eddie Brock introduced as the disgraced journalist who becomes the symbiote's primary host. Other characters like Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, and Dylan Brock have also taken on the Venom mantle. The animated movie would follow Venom: The Last Dance (2024), which featured Tom Hardy and marked the final installment in Sony's live-action Venom trilogy. That film received mixed reviews and concluded Hardy's portrayal of Eddie Brock. Sony has not confirmed a release date or production timeline for the animated Venom film. Grady is played by Topher Grace in The Waterfront. Grady, as a villain, has a unique personality that boasts deranged and narcissistic traits. Recently, in an interview with ScreenRant, creator Kevin Williamson shared details on why he thought Grace would be an apt choice for the role. He said, 'I wanted someone who was so darn likable. Someone we knew to be so darn cute and funny and winning.' Further, he also expressed appreciation for Grace's 'duality.' Additionally, he discusses how Grady stands out and what makes his character so terrifying. He added, 'It's funny because you have someone like Harlan who can be outwardly scary, and then you have Topher Grace that comes in and he's kind of silly, but he's a different type of terrifying to me. He really knocked my socks off.' Marvel fans know Grace from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 (2007). There, he played the beloved anti-hero, Eddie Brock/Venom. In 1998, he made his professional TV debut in the main role of Eric Forman in That '70s Show, which earned him massive attention and recognition. Aside from TV, he also has popular movie credits under his belt, such as Interstellar, BlacKkKlansman, Heretic, Playing It Cool, and others.
