Any Scotland hopes of having Edinburgh Rugby prop Boan Venter available to them next year have hit the rocks after the 28-year-old was selected by South Africa for this weekend's Test match against Georgia. Venter has been with Edinburgh since February 2021 following a move from the Cheetahs and has emerged as an important part of the capital side's pack. He would have become eligible for Scotland on residency grounds in time for the 2026 Six Nations, but any plans for him being part of head coach Gregor Townsend's plans have been dashed after the Springboks handed him his first start. Six Scots to start for Lions against First Nations & Pasifika XV
Six Scotland players will start for the British and Irish Lions in their game against the First Nations & Pasifika XV. Andy Farrell has named his team for the match being played in Melbourne on Tuesday. Blair Kinghorn, Darcy Graham, Duhan van der Merwe, Ben White, Pierre Schoeman, and Scott Cummings are all in the starting side while Ewan Ashman, Rory Sutherland, and Gregor Brown are named among the replacements. Kinghorn, lining up at full-back, has the chance to prove his fitness for the Melbourne Cricket Ground showdown after missing the series opener in Brisbane with a knee injury. Owen Farrell, making his maiden start of the tour 17 days after being called to replace Elliot Daly, will lead the side at the Marvel Stadium. The former England captain forges a midfield partnership with fellow late arrival Jamie Osborne. It will be the first time in four tours that he has skippered the Lions, and his selection presents the opportunity to play his way into contention for Saturday's second Test against the Wallabies. Alex Mitchell is set to continue his remarkable run of having played in every match on tour after being picked on the bench, where he is joined by Ben Earl and Marcus Smith, who are also backing up, having been involved in Saturday's 27-19 win against Australia. Ulster confirm pre-season home fixture with Edinburgh
ULSTER HAVE CONFIRMED a pre-season fixture against Edinburgh. Richie Murphy's team will welcome the Scottish side to Affidea Stadium on Friday, 12 September, with a 7.35pm kick-off. 'We are really looking forward to welcoming Edinburgh Rugby to Belfast in September,' Murphy said. Advertisement 'It's important that we have this match to work towards in our pre-season preparation. Edinburgh are a very competitive side and will bring a strong squad over to test us. 'The fixture offers our players an opportunity to build their match fitness, and also put their hand up for selection going into the new season. 'We face Edinburgh in Round 2 of the URC at the start of October, so this will be ideal preparation. 'As a squad and staff, we are also looking forward to seeing our supporters again ahead of the new season at Affidea Stadium.' Tickets go on sale from Tuesday, 22 July at 10am. Ulster open their 2025/26 URC campaign against Dragons in Belfast on Friday, 26 September.

Gregor Townsend makes five changes for Samoa game
Gregor Townsend has made five changes to the team that lost against Fiji last weekend ahead of Scotland's first match in Auckland since the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Scotland last played at Eden Park against England 14 years ago and will be aiming for their first ever win at the historic venue. In the backs, Kyle Rowe, Kyle Steyn, Fergus Burke and Jamie Dobie all retain their places. Tom Jordan has been ruled out of the match due to fracturing his hand with Rory Hutchinson and Stafford McDowall taking his and Cameron Redpath's place in the centre. Arron Reed starts on the wing in place of Darcy Graham, after scoring a try in the win against the Maori All Blacks.
