Volkswagen unveils most powerful Golf GTI yet in 50th anniversary tribute

Volkswagen is marking 50 years of the Golf GTI with a special edition that also happens to be the most powerful production GTI yet. The new Golf GTI Edition 50 was revealed during the Nürburgring 24 Hours and is set to go into production at the end of 2025, with deliveries expected in early 2026. Looking for a new or used Volkswagen? Find it here with CARmag! Power comes from a 2l turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 239kW and 420N.m. That's a 44kW jump over the standard GTI, and it edges past the Golf GTI Clubsport, which makes 221kW. Power is sent through a seven-speed DSG transmission. Chassis changes include a 15mm drop compared with the standard GTI, with further tweaks available through an optional Performance Package. That setup lowers the car by an additional 5mm, stiffens the springs, and adds revised suspension mounts. Volkswagen says the adjustments improve turn-in and stability under load. Sebastian Willmann, head of chassis development at VW, says the Edition 50 builds on lessons from the Golf VII GTI Clubsport. 'We managed to further increase front axle grip while maintaining neutral, agile handling,' he says. Related: Say Hello to Tengo – Volkswagen's Next Kariega-Made Model Fitted with the optional package, the car gets 19-inch forged wheels weighing 8kg each, wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slicks. A lightweight Akrapovič titanium exhaust saves another 11kg over the standard system. Volkswagen development driver Benjamin Leuchter drove the Edition 50 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:46.13, the fastest recorded lap for a production Golf. 'It's the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' he says. Visual cues include GTI 50 badging on the mirrors and spoiler, a black roof, and a gradient side stripe in Tornado Red, a colour with GTI heritage. Inside, the cabin gets the usual GTI plaid seats with red belts, a GTI 50-branded steering wheel, and green contrast stitching. Five colours will be available: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Tornado Red, and a model-exclusive Dark Moss Green Metallic. Production will take place in Wolfsburg, where the GTI story began nearly five decades ago. Click here and browse thousands of new and used vehicles here with CARmag! Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50: Race-ready hot hatch on the radar for Australia

Volkswagen Australia has voiced its interest in the most powerful Golf GTI ever, though it's unclear when it might make it into local showrooms. "The Golf GTI Edition 50 is currently under study by Volkswagen Australia for a local introduction, pending technical milestones and a business case for the vehicle," Sam Dabestani, product communications manager for VW Group Australia, told CarExpert. Despite being revealed at last week's 24h Nürburgring endurance race, Germany's largest motorsport event, the 2026 Volkswagen GTI Edition 50 isn't due to hit the European market until 2026 – meaning an Australian-market launch, if confirmed, may not be until the latter stages of next year. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. WATCH: Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 sets the fastest Nurburgring lap time by a production VW The GTI Edition 50 is the most powerful production GTI ever, turning up the GTI Clubsport's 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to a hefty 239kW/420Nm, still sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch auto. VW claims the anniversary edition can dash from 0-100km/h in just 5.5 seconds, 0.1s down on the 221kW GTI Clubsport and 0.4s quicker than the standard 195kW GTI currently on sale in Australia. But, the biggest gains have been made under the skin and on the track. The revised chassis sees the Edition 50 sit 15mm lower than the standard GTI, with revised spring rates, steering and Dynamic Chassis Control systems. European buyers will also be able to option the GTI Performance Package which lowers the ride height by a further 5mm, and adds 235mm Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres wrapped around lighter forged alloy wheels as well as stiffer springs for better response and reduced pitching and rolling. Exclusive trimmings include red Queenstown alloy wheels as standard; GTI 50 logos scattered inside and out; black-painted roof and mirrors; Black-to-Tornado Red side stripes; red seatbelts; exclusive seat upholstery combining cloth and synthetic velour; as well as a "newly designed leather sports steering wheel". The optional GTI Performance Package brings the aforementioned black-painted 'Warmenau' forged alloy wheels, and an Akrapovic titanium sports exhaust as pictured above. Volkswagen has confirmed five exterior colours for the GTI Edition 50 abroad, including two exclusive finishes for the 50th anniversary special. Pure White, Moonstone Grey and Grenadilla Black carryover from the standard palette, with Dark Moss Green and Tornado Red offered exclusively on the Edition 50. Tornado Red is a paint synonymous with high-performance Volkswagen vehicles since 1986. Numerous models have worn the distinctive paint colour over the decades, including the Mk2 Golf GTI 16V, the Mk3 Golf VR6 and the Mk7 Golf GTI TCR. Earlier this month, company race driver Benny Leuchter piloted a pre-production Edition 50 to a 7 minute 46.13 second lap around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, making it the fastest production Volkswagen model around the iconic 20.8km German circuit. It beat the 2022 Golf R 20 Years by over a second, the previous VW record holder with a 7 minute 47.31 second time – again with Mr Leuchter at the wheel – despite the R's extra 6kW of power and all-paw traction. For reference, the GTI Edition 50's 7:46:13 Nordschleife record is within striking distance of the 2023 Type R's 7:44:881 and 2019 Megane R.S. Trophy R's 7:45:39 times. The record holder for compact vehicles, however, is the Golf's cousin the Audi RS3 – which holds a 7:33:123 best time. Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 Unleashed

Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf GTI EDITION 50, a special model commemorating the 50th anniversary of the iconic GTI. With an impressive output of 239 kW (325 PS), this is the most powerful Golf GTI ever produced. Designed to deliver unparalleled driving dynamics, the EDITION 50 is a testament to Volkswagen's commitment to performance and precision. This milestone model not only celebrates five decades of GTI heritage but also sets a new benchmark for compact sports cars, showcasing the brand's dedication to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in a high-performance hatchback. Unmatched Performance and Engineering The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, delivering an astounding 325 PS and 420 Nm of torque. This represents a significant upgrade over the standard Golf GTI, which offers 265 PS and 370 Nm. The increased power output is achieved through a combination of advanced engine tuning and upgraded components, ensuring that the EDITION 50 delivers a thrilling driving experience without compromising reliability. The chassis of the EDITION 50 has been carefully refined, featuring a MacPherson front axle and a four-link rear axle, with the car sitting 15 mm lower than the standard model. This lowered stance, combined with the optimized suspension geometry, enhances the car's handling and stability, allowing drivers to tackle even the most challenging roads with confidence. For those seeking even greater performance, the optional GTI Performance package includes semi-slick tyres, a titanium exhaust system, and a further 5 mm reduction in ride height, enhancing agility and grip. The semi-slick tyres provide exceptional traction, while the titanium exhaust system not only reduces weight but also delivers a distinctive and aggressive sound, adding to the car's overall driving experience. Exclusive Design and Features The Golf GTI EDITION 50 features a host of unique design elements that set it apart from the standard model. The exterior features a GTI 50 logo on the roof spoiler and exterior mirrors, serving as a subtle reminder of the car's special status. The black tailpipe trims and a striking side stripe in Tornado Red add to the car's sporty and aggressive appearance, while also paying homage to the GTI's rich history. Inside, the car features sporty seats with a check pattern, reminiscent of the original GTI's iconic design. The red seat belts and a multifunction leather sports steering wheel with integrated shift paddles further enhance the car's performance-oriented character. These details, combined with the car's advanced chassis and engine, create a driving experience that is both exhilarating and refined, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate the perfect balance between performance and style. Pricing and Availability Production of the Golf GTI EDITION 50 will begin in Wolfsburg at the end of 2025, with deliveries scheduled for early 2026. While Volkswagen has yet to announce official pricing, the exclusive features and enhanced performance suggest a premium price point compared to the standard Golf GTI. Given the limited nature of this special edition model, it is expected to be in high demand among GTI enthusiasts and collectors alike. Customers can expect a range of exterior colors, including the exclusive Dark Moss Green Metallic and Tornado Red, a shade synonymous with Volkswagen's high-performance models. These colors, along with the classic Pure White, Moonstone Grey, and Grenadilla Black Metallic, offer buyers the opportunity to personalize their EDITION 50 to suit their individual style preferences. Explore More from Volkswagen For enthusiasts interested in high-performance vehicles, Volkswagen offers a range of models that cater to different driving preferences.
