A guide to using Edits, Meta's CapCut rival for short-form video editing
Meta recently released a new video editing app for creators called Edits. The new app is designed to rival ByteDance's CapCut, a popular short-form video-editing app used by many creators. Meta first shared that it was working on Edits back in January after ByteDance-owned CapCut was removed from U.S. app stores when the TikTok ban momentarily went into effect. Although the app has since come back online and is available to download, TikTok's future in the U.S. remains uncertain, so Meta is ready to capitalize on CapCut's possible absence in the future with its new Edits app. We've created this guide to walk you through the app and the different features it offers, and we provide an overview of how it compares to CapCut. How to get started with the app Image Credits:Meta Edits is available to download on both iOS and Android. Once you download the app and open it, you will be asked to log in with your Instagram account. From there you will see five main tabs: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Record, and Insights. The Ideas tab offers creators a space to jot down ideas for new videos and save reels to a collection, and the Inspiration tab features a hub for discovering trending audios and other popular reels. The Projects tab is where creators can store and revisit the videos they currently have in progress. This tab is also where creators can upload videos from their phone's camera roll. The Record tab lets creators start filming video content right within Edits. Lastly, the Insights tab gives creators an overview of how their content is performing by surfacing metrics like views, reach, and follower counts. While both Edits and CapCut are great options for editing short-form videos, there are some differences between the two services. CapCut offers more robust editing options, including AI features, than Edits does. Of course, this can be expected since Edits is a lot newer than CapCut. Meta will likely continue to build out Edits over the next months and years, so we can expect to see more advanced functionality in the future. It's also worth noting that CapCut has a more extensive music library compared to Edits. Another difference is the fact that Edits currently doesn't have a subscription offering (for now), but CapCut does. While CapCut offers a free version, some of its advanced tools are locked behind a paid subscription. Edits is free to use, but this will likely change in the future, as Instagram head Adam Mosseri has stated that later versions of Edits may include paid features. In addition, while CapCut is available on the web, Edits is mobile-only. However, this could change in the future. Update: This story originally ran in May and is updated regularly with new information.

YouTube Shorts is adding an image-to-video AI tool, new AI effects
YouTube announced on Wednesday that it's giving Shorts creators access to new generative AI features, including an image-to-video AI tool and new AI effects. The image to video feature lets users turn a picture from their camera roll into a six-second video. Users will see a selection of suggestions that are relevant to the photo they uploaded. YouTube says the feature can be used to add movement to landscape photos, animate pictures of everyday photos, or bring group photos to life. In an example given by YouTube, the feature turns a static image of a pedestrian signal into a short video that slowly zooms into a dancing version of the walking man symbol. The feature works similarly to an offering already available in Gemini. Plus, it's similar to the Animate tool in Meta's Edits app, which also uses AI to transform static images into videos. The new tool is rolling out over the next week in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. YouTube plans to bring it to more regions later this year. It's worth noting that Google Photos is also getting a similar image-to-video tool. As for the new AI effects, creators can use them to transform their doodles into artistic images and turn their selfies into videos where they're swimming underwater, twinning with someone, and more. Users can find these new effects by navigating to the 'Effects' icon in the Shorts camera and then tapping 'AI' to browse all of the generative effects. YouTube notes that the features announced today are powered by Veo 2, Google's AI model for video generation. YouTube says it uses SynthID watermarks and clear labels to indicate that these creations were generated with AI. Last month at Cannes Lions 2025, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that Google's Veo 3 video generator, which can generate both video and audio, will be coming to Shorts later this summer. He also shared that Shorts are now averaging more than 200 billion daily views. YouTube also announced on Wednesday that AI Playground is its new home for generative AI creation tools, inspirational examples, prefilled prompts, and more. Creators can find AI Playground by tapping the Create button and then the sparkle icon in the top right corner. It's available now for everyone in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Sign in to access your portfolio

Edits Gets Improved Music Discovery, Improved Keyframe Editing and More
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. The updates keep on coming for Meta's video editing app 'Edits,' with the tool getting three new features to help creators customize and maximize their video content. First off, Edits is getting a new royalty-free music discovery option, which will make it easier to find music that you can use (without losing monetization) to accompany your clips. As you can see in this example, the new listing is being added to the existing music discovery element, with creators now able to switch over to the 'Royalty free' tab to select from a listing of tracks that they can use without licensing. Which will save you headaches if you want to promote your posts, as you won't have to re-create them without commercial music. Edits is also adding a new keyframe editing feature for more precise editing. As you can see in these example screens, the updated keyframe editing display will make it easier to apply stickers, text and cutouts with precision, providing more creative options within your process. Edits added keyframe editing last month, which enables you to hone in on more specific elements in video playback. The updated keyframe editing options are being rolled out on iOS only at this stage. And finally, Edits is getting another 10 new voice effects, so you can make yourself sound like a ghost, a robot, and more. Edits also expanded its voice effects back in May as well, with these new options giving you more creative considerations for your video clips. It's been pretty interesting to see how Edits continues to add more features and options, which Meta did pledge to do at launch. Though social apps claim a lot of things when they first release a product, so the fact that Meta has followed through on this, and released weekly feature updates for the app, is significant. Of course, video is the best-performing content type across both Facebook and Instagram, so it makes sense for Meta to encourage more video posting where it can. And definitely, Edits will help in this respect, with a growing array of creative options that can help more people create interesting, engaging video content. These updates are available in the latest version of the Edits app. Recommended Reading Instagram Adds New Views Insights To Guide Creative Performance Sign in to access your portfolio

Edits Gets New Performance Insights, Improved Audio Editing Tools
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. The updates just keep on coming for Instagram's new video editing app 'Edits,' with this latest round of improvements including expanded performance insights, improved audio editing, and refined sharing options from the app. First off, Edits is getting more data on Reels performance to help you optimize your content approach. As you can see in this example, now, you can access more info on accounts reached, while you can also filter your Reels listing by likes, comments, and/or saves, That'll make it easier to measure the specific performance elements of each Reel, and understand what's resonating for your goals. Edits also now has a new way to reduce unwanted noise in your clips, and enhance voices in your Reels to make them stand-out. As you can see in this example, you'll now have new audio balance options via simple sliders, which will enable you to customize audio playback, and improve the presentation of your content. Finally, you can now also more easily share your Edits creations to more places via an improved sharing UI. A simplified sharing UI, with Meta's apps highlighted as the key destinations, though other platforms are available within your various options. In addition to this, you'll also now be able to choose which exports you want to download, which could help you save data space on your device. These are some handy updates, which go along with the weekly tweaks and changes that Meta's added to the app since its launch back in April. And it's quickly becoming a must-have tool for all social media creators, providing a range of handy editing and refinement options to optimize your video content. Which is the best performing content type, across all social media apps, so if you're not familiar with Edits yet, and you're not creating video content, it could be best to make a move to change that.
