Digital drive: Telangana Waqf Board to train 15,000 muthawalis for handling property documents online on UMEED Portal

HYDERABAD: With the Centre rolling out portal Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) to streamline waqf properties across the country, Telangana Waqf Board has decided to train 15,000 muthawalis, who are custodians and caretakers of waqf properties in the state. The muthawalis will have to upload documents related to waqf properties and also register themselves on the portal. The waqf board has decided to train them as majority of the muthawalis do not even have basic knowledge of computers. The muthawalis have to upload details of about 33,000 properties and 77,000 acres of land in the state. "There is a three-tier system for entry of waqf properties. Once the muthawali (maker) enters the details, waqf board officials (inspectors or verifiers) check the details, whether all the relevant information is provided or not. The chief executive officer (CEO) (approver)will then approve the details uploaded by the muthawalis," Telangana Waqf Board CEO Md Asadullah told TOI. The problem is a majority of the muthawalis are aged above 50 and no well versed with computers. In such a scenario, the board would permit their immediate family members to help them by taking an undertaking. The officials said 'master trainers' were trained by the representatives of the Union minority affairs ministry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The master trainers would coach the district-level waqf inspectors and auditors. The inspectors would, in turn, teach muthawalis in the third phase, which is likely to begin next month. Officials said the digital platform UMEED has real-time uploading facilities and ensures transparency and accountability for the waqf properties. "It has features such as geo-tagging of all waqf properties, an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness, transparent leasing and usage tracking, integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, and public access to verified records and reports," a senior official said. Officials hope the new digital platform would end illegal leasing and encroachment of waqf properties in the state.

Ministry of Minority Affairs launches centralised digital platform for real-time monitoring of Waqf properties

New Delhi Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday (June 6, 2025) launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal, a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. The Minister said the portal will bring about a paradigm shift in administration of Waqf assets by introducing greater transparency, accountability, and public participation. 'The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help common Muslims, particularly women and children,' said Mr. Rijiju. Developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the UMEED will feature a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties. Other key features include an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness and integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, the Ministry said, adding the portal will also provide the public access to verified records and reports related to the Waqf. Terming the portal a historic step, Mr. Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED was more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for poor Muslims, for whom it was originally meant,' he added. George Kurian, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, said that the portal was a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring Waqf administration closer to the people. 'The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed,' he added. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry, said that he expected the UMEED portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.

Correcting The Course: A Bold Waqf Reform Rooted In Justice

In what stands as a pivotal moment in India's legislative evolution, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 — now officially titled the UMEED Act (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development) — has finally passed into law. This is not merely another amendment; it is a long-awaited legal reckoning aimed at restoring transparency, reinforcing constitutional principles, and bringing overdue justice to the governance of religious properties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's NDA government has taken a calculated yet courageous step, navigating decades of inertia with a reform that has been needed for far too long.

Cops deny permission for protests against Waqf, UCC

Ahmedabad: Muslim outfits in Gujarat have planned widespread protests against the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Act and the bid to bring in the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. However, they are finding it difficult to get police permission to stage demonstrations or take out a rally, leading to allegations of restriction on freedom of expression . The Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti, formed by more than half a dozen different Muslim outfits to raise issues related to the Waqf Amendment Act and UCC, announced on Monday that it planned to form a human chain at Nehru Bridge on Tuesday evening, with the participation of over 2,000 people expected. However, the samiti has not been granted permission for this programme by the city police. Samiti members met the police commissioner but failed to secure the permission. "While police have refused to grant formal permission, they have conveyed that we should wrap up the programme in 10 minutes. This is not possible, and we will go ahead with the programme even without the permission," said Iqbal Beg Mirza of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat. Mirza said that the police did not grant permission to Muslims in Dholka and Himmatnagar on Sunday. "As a last resort, we will move the Gujarat high court," he said. However, a citizen from Banaskantha withdrew his petition from the HC on Monday, complaining against the non-granting of permission by the police to hold a protest.
