Designer Effie Kats shares her fashion favourites

This story is part of the June 29 edition of Sunday Life. Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, designer Effie Kats. The designer's signature scent is 'Jazz Club' by Maison Margiela Replic. How would you describe your style? There's a duality. During the day I keep it simple with clean silhouettes and some subtle structure; at night my look becomes softer and more intuitive with a hint of drama. I predominantly wear my own labels. Effie Kats is evening wear and Bayse Brand is more casual, so I'm covered. What's the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A Chanel belt – the classic gold chain with black leather woven through it and a gold medallion – from the 1980s. And the most recent addition? The 'Boat' bag from Korean label OSOI. I like supporting smaller independent brands, it feels more personal, less about trends and more about unique design.

Designer Effie Kats had a ‘brave' fashion moment which she now regrets

I like supporting smaller independent brands, it feels more personal, less about trends and more about unique design. What would you wear … on a first date? My go-to is the classic 'jeans and a nice top' formula – maybe the Bayse Brand 'Amrita' bodysuit – with a pair of Paris Texas 'Lidia' mules. … on a plane? Loose jeans, an oversized tee, sports jacket, loafers and my The Row 'Margaux' suede bag. … on the red carpet? I like a timeless silhouette with sharp styling. Selena Gomez and Elsa Hosk do it best. What's your favourite fashion era? When Tom Ford was at Gucci (1994 – 2004). I love the simplicity, the confidence, the sex appeal; it defined the '90s in such a powerful way, and it still resonates today. It had a big impact on me as a designer. Who are your favourite designers? Tom Ford, always. More recently, Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino. There's something powerful in his pared back and elegant designs – the palettes were muted, the silhouettes minimal but the overall impact was so bold. I'm excited to see what he brings to Balenciaga.

Fashion mogul threatens to sell her dog after it destroys $500 luxury item

Fashion mogul Effie Kats has jokingly threatened to sell her dog after the pooch destroyed one of her handbags. The 34-year-old took to social media on Wednesday to share a video of the damage, revealing a large hole chewed into her $495 clutch from The Concept. Clearly unimpressed, Kats joked in the caption: 'Anyone after a one-year-old Samoyed?' Effie also shared a photo of her dog looking at the camera, along with the caption: 'The look of guilt'. Effie is a popular Melbourne designer who dresses the likes of Nadia Bartel, Carrie Bickmore and Rebecca Judd. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In November 2023, she walked down the aisle with her finance broker fiancé James Cerolini in Melbourne. The pair married in a lavish ceremony at St Patrick's Cathedral and held her opulent reception at State Library Victoria. She stunned in an elaborate, semi-sheer lace gown by Zuhair Murad, which she acquired after making trips to Paris for fittings. Effie later changed into a second dress for her reception, this time from local designer Alin Le'kal. It was no small affair, with 260 in attendance on the star-studded guest list, including Nadia, Bec , Khanh Ong, Jessie Murphy and Lana Wilkinson. Women were asked to wear black or gold to what was described as an elegant affair. The founder of the Effie Kats and Bayse brands said the wedding,'exceeded every expectation I had'. She told the Herald Sun: 'Every part of it just blew my mind. It was great. I had a wedding planner, Valentina, I could not have done it without her. 'There were small hiccups along the way, but it was the perfect day.' The society couple became engaged in 2021 during lockdown, giving Effie lots of time to plan her big day. 'I've attended so many events and we want to create something spectacular for our guests,' she told Confidential. 'It's on Stakes Day and Remembrance Day so it'll add to an already insane schedule.' Effie had at first decided to organise the event herself without the help of a wedding planner, but later changed her mind. Around the time of their engagement, Effie and James purchased a home in Melbourne's Malvern. The 'rundown' three bedroom property, which cost $1.65 million, is a fixer-upper project for the pair. 'We wanted a house in the right location with some character, that needed a lot of love' Effie told Effie is a beloved Australian designer whose clothing has been seen on A-list clients like Dannii Minogue, Kelly Rowland, Carrie Bickmore and DJ Havana Brown.

Sydney vs Melbourne rivalry reignited as Toorak 'it' girls take on the eastern suburbs socialites at swanky fashion dinner - but there is one noticeable absence: 'They know how to show up'

The age-old Sydney versus Melbourne rivalry reared its head again this week. And it all happened at the launch of Melbourne based designer Effie Kats' new collection at the Buon Ricordo restaurant in the Sydney Suburb of Paddington. A gaggle of Melbourne's hottest 'It' girls made the trek up north for the event where they were joined by some Sydney's most notable socialites. The Melbourne gang included Nadia Bartel, Lindy Klim, Rozilla Russian, Sarah Lucas, Jade Kisnorbo, Lana Wilkinson, and the woman of the hour, Effie Kats. Curiously, the doyenne of Melbourne socialites, Bec Judd, was conspicuously absent. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Meanwhile, the Sydney contingent was represented by Bernadette Fahey, Deborah Symond O'Neil, Simone Holtznagel, Anna Heinrich, Ellie Ferguson, Montana Cox, Kate Waterhouse, Sarah Ellen and Indy Clinton. It was somewhat of an auspicious occasion too, with the Melbourne and Sydney socialite clutches rarely seen together outside of huge events such as the Melbourne Cup Carnival. While there was interstate mingling, both groups posed for some separate group photos. The Melbourne contingent appeared to arrive at the event together, with Sydney based Elle Ferguson sharing a shot of the group to Instagram. The image showed fashion influencer Rozalia , makeup artist Jade Kisnorbo, Effie, Henne designer Nadia, stylist Lana and socialite Sarah posing up a storm as they arrived. 'The Melbourne crew know how to show up. Just WOW!' Ellie captioned the stunning snap. The Sydney contingent appeared to be sticking together too, with former Bachelor star Anna sharing a selfie to Instagram that showed her posing cheek to cheek with racing heiress Kate Waterhouse. There did seem to be some interstate mingling on Anna's feed however, with another photo showing her posing close with Sydney model Simone and Jade Kisnorbo. TikTok star Indy Clinton looked to be having a whale of a time, beaming broadly as she exited the venue. She put on a quirky display, shielding herself from the rain with an eye-catching children's umbrella. The colourful accessory was somewhat at odds with Indy's chic fitted black dress with a cut-out at the midriff. Nadia Bartel was dressed to the nines in a chocolate brown full length gown with a plunging, bare back. The dress clung close to her figure before flaring off into draped skirting and also included sheer long sleeves. Nadia chose a warm toned makeup look with lots of highlighter and a dark pink nude lip. The former AFL WAG was seen leaving the venue with Melbourne-based actress Sarah Ellen. The Neighbours actress brought out her inner goth with a pale makeup look and daring black velvet dress with a large cut out at the side and a short train. Sarah was also spotted at the front of the venue with her pal and music collaborator Josh Kempen who rugged up in a grey beanie. Aussie Home Loans heiress Deborah Symond O'Neil put on quite a stylish display in a stunning strapless white gown. She left her flaxen locks down for the occasion, accessorising with some silver bling in her ears and a matching thick silver necklace. Simone Holtznagel was also spotted leaving the venue, rugging up in a long black trench coat that finished below the knee. She wore this over a stunning black one shoulder gown that sat close to her figure. Bondi Pilates queen Bernadette Fahey was also all smiles leaving the star-studded event. She cut a chic figure in a high-neck black blouse that she wore under a smart black blazer.
