Urbana high schoolers take part in Earth Day cleanup

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — High schoolers in Urbana celebrated Earth Day on Tuesday with a mass cleanup spearheaded by students themselves. Clean-up efforts focused on Blair and Carle Parks along with the area surrounding Urbana High School. Champaign's Eggstravaganza keeps Easter celebrations going Around 40 student volunteers led the initiative and walked the areas with garbage bags and trash grabbers. One student said cleaning up his community brings him a sense of pride. 'It's something that everyone can do, and it's just a little bit of work and it has such a big impact.' said sophomore Colin Guth. And now thanks to students at Urbana High School — their efforts are making their home just a little bit cleaner this Earth Day. 'It's really nice — like a community builder,' Guth said. 'There's not as many opportunities to do something like this, so it's really nice to come out here and do that with, first of all, people I know.' Students also improved the area surrounding their school not just by subtracting trash but also by adding art. They installed a 'peace pole' in the school garden. From the Farm: Science and Spirits 'This peace pole in particular really contains a lot of languages to represent our diverse community.' said Kanittha Fay. Fay is the Parent Teacher Student Association Director of Student Engagement. She said the pole was created by 50 to 60 ag and art students over the last year. 'We want to let everybody know that they're seen, they're heard and they are equal,' Fay said. 'This is what students got together and presented to the community.' Jennifer Ivory-Tatum is the Urbana Schools Superintendent. 'We really are pushing community pride and our students take pride in being or being Urbana Tigers,' Ivory-Tatum said. And she said it's because of that pride that students are leading the way for a better and cleaner tomorrow. 'And so, I think it says a lot that they show up,' Ivory-Tatum added. 'We've been out here in the rain before and cold, and today it's absolutely beautiful. But their commitment to service and to making our community better is really evident.' Organizers said they're looking forward to continuing the event again next year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The hunt was on at the Morton Grove Park District ‘Eggstravaganza' hunt event for children and pooches,

Easter egg hunts are springtime events that only the kiddos would love — said no one at the Prairie View Park in Morton Grove where dozens of family dogs also got in on the action last Saturday. The Morton Grove Park District held its annual 'Eggstravaganza' egg hunt at Prairie View Park, bringing nearly 200 kids age 1 to 10 to the park to search for treat-filled plastic eggs. Then, after their early morning treasure hunt, the dogs took to the field for the 'Doggie Egg Hunt.' Organizers said 44 dogs participated. 'We heard from many participants [who] say they had a great time at the event,' Park District Recreation Supervisor Claire Baumgartner told Pioneer Press via email. 'Kids had a great time scooping up eggs, looking for a golden egg for a prize, seeing the bunny, and enjoying the beautiful weather.' Baumbartner said the Park District is pleased with the turnout. The annual event features a visit by the Easter bunny, and the eggs the kids find have small toys and candy inside. The event was broken up into age groups, with 1- and 2-year-olds hunting first in an event exclusively for their age group. The older children filled their bags and baskets – which they had to provide themselves – with goodies. Then, the dogs' hunt was held. All participants had to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, according to the flyer announcing the event. 'We had a wonderful turnout of participants on a beautiful April day. Families came and stuck around to find all the treasures in their eggs and to enjoy the park. We have a great time putting on this event, seeing everyone get together as a community, and watching the kids light up as they find all their goodies,' Baumgartner stated in the email.

Ross Park Zoo's Eggstavaganza kicks off Easter weekend

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – It's Easter weekend, and the Ross Park Zoo is decked out, for a park-wide Easter egg hunt. Today started Ross Park Zoo's Eggstravaganza, continuing tomorrow rain or shine from 10 to 4. Throughout the park, there's fun games and activities for the kids to play, and win prizes. The Easter Bunny was on site today and will be there again tomorrow to take pictures with families. The community engagement manager at the Zoo, Kathy Whyte, says don't forget that the zoo is still open on Easter Sunday. 'We've got a new take on the way we do our scavenger hunt for eggs. It's a self-paced thing, where you don't have people tripping over eachother, big kids trying to get eggs from little kids. You just look for the giant plastic eggs that are placed all throughout the zoo, make a notation on your card, and go through our gift shop to get a prize. There's a special egg that's been hidden through the zoo,' Whyte said. Whyte says this weekend only, the zoo is offering a special 10 percent discount if you buy a membership. And if you're already a member, this weekend's Eggstravaganza is free admission. Find out more online at Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
