Mohit Suri says music is 'screenplay' for him: 'I won't shoot a single day till I have all my songs ready'
Filmmaker Mohit Suri is returning to the romance genre with his upcoming film, Saiyaara. The film stars a new lead pair in Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda. But to Mohit, the musical aspect is just as important as the cast. Tanishk Bagchi has composed the film's music, and all four released songs are trending on YouTube. In a candid chat with HT ahead of the film's release, the filmmaker talks about the significance of music and the film. Mohit Suri opens up on his upcoming film, Saiyaara. In a career that has spanned two decades, Mohit has made films in various genres, but music has been at the heart of all of them. He explains, "I have never actually made films without music, whether it's a thriller like Murder 2, a drama like Aashiqui 2, or an action film like Awarapan. Even a slasher like Ek Villain has music." However, Mohit adds that, contrary to what everyone believes, he is not well-versed in music. "Everyone assumes I am good with music, but I am not. I only know love songs. Maybe I am good at it. I want to make films that have music that stays relevant today and tomorrow. I use songs as a screenplay, not as something that needs to be added as garnish," he tells us. On Saiyaara Unlike many other directors, Mohit does not believe in adding songs and music as an afterthought. "Many record their songs after the shoot is finished. But that doesn't work for me," he says, adding, "I will not shoot a single day until I have all my songs ready. That's just something I need, especially on a film like Saiyaara." Saiyaara is a romance, and Mohit adds that in a love story, good music is 'as important as chemistry between the leads'. He explains, "The music holds the audience and adds to the emotion. That is important." Produced by Akshaye Widhani under the Yash Raj Films banner, Saiyaara is set to release in theatres on 18 July.

Saiyaara title song: Ahaan Panday channels rockstar in song from Mohit Suri's film that feels like hark back to Aashiqui 2
Yash Raj Films on Tuesday released the title track of Mohit Suri's upcoming romantic film Saiyaara, featuring Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday. Ahaan, who will make his debut as the lead in the film, is actor Ananya Panday's cousin. The four-minute title song has elements of both romance and sadness, just like the tracks of Aashiqui 2 (2013), Ek Villain (2014), and other Mohit Suri hits. In the song, Ahaan and Aneet's characters are seen sharing a lot of romantic moments in a city and on an island. They gaze at the stars and kiss underwater. At one point, Ahan's character breaks down, screams, and destroys a grand black piano unveiled by Aneet's character. The song has been composed by Tanishk Bagchi, Arslan Nizami, and Faheem Abdullah, who has also lent his voice to the track. The lyrics are written by Irshaad Kamil. 'One thing that only a handful close friends know about me is that I love meeting new composers, singers, Collecting melodies and songs much like people who love reading, collect books. So the album of Saiyaara has my songs, thoughts and melodies that I have carefully collected and curated for over five years,' said Mohit Suri in a statement. 'Saiyaara title track will also see us launch Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nizami, two extremely talented Indian composers and singers (from Kashmir) to Bollywood. The track has been composed by the genius Tanishk Bagchi, who I thank for making me meet Faheem and Arslan,' added the filmmaker. Aneet Padda, the leading lady of Saiyaara, has previously acted in the Amazon Prime Video India coming-of-age series Big Girls Don't Cry and the Kajol-starrer film Salaam Venky (2022), helmed by Revathy. Described by YRF as 'an intense love story,' the teaser of the film, unveiled last week, gave fans a first glimpse of the raw emotions and electric romance — elements common to Mohit Suri's filmography. Saiyaara Teaser: Anurag Basu Praises Mohit Suri's Direction, Calls It ‘Outstanding'
Last Updated: Saiyaara teaser earns praise from Anurag Basu. Directed by Mohit Suri, starring Ahaan Panday & Aneet Padda, the YRF romance hits theatres on July 18, 2025. The monsoon season may have just begun, but romance is already in the air—and it's pouring cinematic magic. Yash Raj Films' much-anticipated romantic drama Saiyaara is already turning heads across the industry, with its teaser dropping to an overwhelming wave of praise. Among those quick to shower appreciation is filmmaker Anurag Basu, who lauded director Mohit Suri and praised the teaser's emotional impact, calling it 'outstanding." Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Basu wrote, 'Outstanding teaser!! Mohit Suri never disappoints ❤️"—a powerful endorsement from the Barfi! and Ludo director, known for his own mastery of emotionally resonant storytelling. Mohit never disappoints!! Outstanding Teaser — anurag basu (@basuanurag) May 31, 2025 The teaser for Saiyaara, released on June 7, is less of a preview and more of a sensory experience. Clocking in under two minutes, it delivers a rain-soaked montage of stolen glances, swirling emotions, and soulful background music. Mohit Suri, known for hit romantic dramas like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, and Malang, brings his signature emotional weight and visual flair to Saiyaara. True to YRF tradition, the teaser doesn't give away much of the plot but hints at an epic love story wrapped in longing, heartbreak, and quiet intensity. With themes of youthful passion, inner conflict, and bittersweet fate, the teaser has already sparked comparisons to past YRF classics like Fanaa, Veer-Zaara, and Mohabbatein. What truly stands out, though, is the rich, cinematic texture of the visuals—each frame seems built to evoke both nostalgia and newness. While Anurag Basu's endorsement grabbed headlines, he's far from the only one charmed by Saiyaara's teaser. Actors Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor, and other Bollywood stars have shared the teaser on their social media, calling it 'soulful," 'poetic," and 'the kind of story we've been missing." It's clear that beyond the fan anticipation, Saiyaara is striking a chord within the industry itself. Directed by Mohit Suri and produced by YRF's CEO Akshaye Widhani, Saiyaara is already generating significant curiosity for introducing two fresh faces in leading roles—Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. While Ahaan comes from a prominent film lineage and has spent the last few years cutting his teeth behind the camera on projects like Mardaani 2 and Freaky Ali, this marks his official on-screen debut. His co-star, Aneet Padda, is a rising talent who first made waves in Salaam Venky (2022), directed by Revathy, where she held her own alongside veterans like Kajol. She further solidified her screen presence with her performance in Amazon Prime Video's coming-of-age series Big Girls Don't Cry. Produced under the Yash Raj Films banner and backed by Akshaye Widhani, Saiyaara is all set for a grand worldwide theatrical release on July 18, 2025. In a year when audiences are showing renewed excitement for romantic dramas, especially in theaters, this release couldn't come at a better time. First Published:
