55% of Survey Respondents View Morocco as External Threat to Spain
Rabat – A new survey by Spain's Elcano Royal Institute shows that 55% of Spanish people view Morocco as a main external threat to their country. The number marks a six-point increase from a similar survey that the institute carried out last year. Conducted between May 19-29 this year, the survey featured responses from 1,000 participants. The findings ranked Morocco higher than Russia in terms of how much the North African country is perceived as a threat among Spaniards. Russia comes next with 33% of votes and the US with 19% – the latter marking a surge from 5% in 2024. According to the survey, the perception of Morocco as an external threat is stronger among right-wing respondents. Over 60% of the respondents, meanwhile, see Spain as safe from immediate threat from other countries, while 40% of others disagree. The perception of Morocco as a threat is fueled by different factors, including narratives in the Spanish media, which closely monitor the country's development across multiple sectors, particularly the military. In November, Spanish media were concerned about US President Donald Trump's re-election as well as the strengthened ties between Rabat and Washington, with local analysts warning of the potential implications for Spain's interests and influence in the Mediterranean. Spanish newspaper El Confidencial quoted Jose Antonio Gurpegui claiming that the strong ties between Morocco and the US will influence any future disputes between Rabat and Madrid. A few months ago, Spanish media also warned of growing threats to the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Several publications expressed alarm over potential shifts in the enclaves' status under Donald Trump's second US presidency. 'In the realm of security, there is concern that Trump could make an announcement about Ceuta and Melilla similar to what he did about Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara,' El Español reported in an analysis published in February. Spanish media outlets are also concerned about Morocco's robust and growing military, viewing it as a threat rather than a sovereign strategic choice. El Independiente claimed in March that Morocco's advancement in aviation 'poses a challenge to neighboring armies, including Spain,' adding that 'the Spanish case is particularly striking,' Spanish media are also alarmed by Morocco's infrastructure and economic development, with many reports highlighting the country's performance in terms of port activities, among others. Notably, Spanish media are concerned about the good performance that Morocco's Tangier Med Port has been achieving in the past years, drawing comparisons between the Moroccan hub and Algeciras and other central Spanish ports. The clever reason oranges are always sold in red mesh bags
You may have wondered why this fruit is typically sold in a very specific way. A food expert has revealed why a popular fruit always seems to be sold in a specific type of packaging. It might seem strange but selling oranges in a red mesh bag actually makes them more appealing to shoppers. In a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok, food technology expert and author Miguel A. Lurueña revealed what it is about this packaging that makes us more likely to buy the fruit. Speaking to his thousands of followers, he said: "Have you noticed that oranges are always sold in red mesh bags? It's no coincidence." As reported by Spanish news site El Confidencial, the aim is to enhance the natural colour of the food and make it more attractive to the consumer's eyes. This aesthetic decision actually directly plays with our visual perception. According to Lurueña, who is from Spain, it is a supermarket trick based on a phenomenon known as the Munker illusion, named after German researcher Franz Carl Munker in the 1970s. This optical illusion causes the colour we perceive of an object to be altered by the colours surrounding it. In his video, Lurueña shows a visual example. In an image created by himself, the same fruit appears to have more intense shades when crossed by red lines. "The fruit in the middle seems much more orange than the other two due to the red lines passing over it,' he said. 'However, the colour of all three fruits is exactly the same," commented the expert. The Munker illusion means that the colour of an object can appear different depending on the background colour or surrounding elements. In the case of food, this visual manipulation can be used to make fruits and vegetables appear fresher and riper than they really are. Red is able to intensify warm tones like orange and yellow, resulting in a more appetising appearance. This technique is not only applied to selling oranges. The former university lecturer also shared that it used with other fresh products such as lemons, peppers, avocados, onions, and purple garlic. The goal is always to enhance the natural colour of the food and make it more attractive to shoppers. Lurueña added: "So don't trust your senses. Read labels carefully and try to buy fruits and vegetables in bulk to avoid surprises.'

Florentino Perez did not want Xabi Alonso as Real Madrid manager for Club World Cup
This summer's Club World Cup will be the start of Xabi Alonso's reign as head coach of Real Madrid, following his move from Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the domestic season. The former Galactico replaced Carlo Ancelotti, although this was not the plan that the club had in mind. In the final few weeks of the season, it became apparent that Ancelotti would not be continuing at Real Madrid for the remainder of his contract, which was due to expire in 2026. His replacement was always going to be Alonso, but according to El Confidencial (via Sport), the plan had been for the Spaniard to take charge after the Club World Cup. Advertisement Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was the driving force behind this, as he believed a poor Club World Cup would add early and unnecessary pressure on to Alonso for the start of the 2025-26. And that is why Los Blancos wanted Santiago Solari in charge for this summer's tournament in the United States. VIGO, SPAIN – NOVEMBER 11: Head coach Santiago Solari of Real Madrid during the La Liga match between RC Celta de Vigo and Real Madrid CF at Abanca-Balaidos on November 11, 2018 in Vigo, Spain. (Photo by) But as revealed by the report, Solari turned down the offer, which greatly infuriated Perez. And it was not the only proposal that the Argentine, who has been Real Madrid interim manager on multiple occasions, opted to turn down, as he rejected the chance to take charge of the woman's team. As a result, it was quickly decided that Alonso should be in charge of Real Madrid for the Club World Cup. And while it does bring a risk of him being on the back foot early on with a poor campaign, there is a chance that early momentum is built with a successful tournament in the United States.
