Toddler dies after being left in back of scorching hot car in middle of heatwave

The two-year-old boy was discovered in the back of his dad's car at an industrial estate in Spain as the country grapples with a scorching heatwave, sparking several health warnings A toddler has tragically been found dead after being left in the back of a car during a lethal heatwave, with temperatures soaring to around 35 degrees. The heartbreaking incident occurred in Spain, as the nation battles extreme weather that has triggered numerous health alerts across western Europe. ‌ The boy, believed to be two-years-old, was left inside his father's car on an industrial estate in the Costa Dorada town of Valls near the eastern coastal city of Tarragona, although formal identification has not yet taken place. ‌ Emergency services were called around 3pm, when the sun is at the highest point of the sky, with the fire brigade first called to remove the tragic tot from the vehicle. Upon their arrival, the baby's distraught father was already by the child's side with the car door open. Emergency services made desperate attempts to resuscitate him, with medical responders arriving shortly afterwards. They performed CPR on the tiny child before realising he had suffered cardiac arrest. Shortly thereafter, the responders acknowledged they could do nothing further to save the baby, and he was declared dead at the scene, the Daily Star reports. An investigation into the tragic event was launched on Monday (June 30), but it remains unclear whether any arrests related to the incident have been made. Meanwhile, authorities in Karpathos, Greece, are currently probing the disappearance of a British tourist. Local Greek reports have suggested the 60-year-old Brit has been missing since Friday, when his car was found locked. Police and firefighters are currently scouring the area for the man, with special forces expected to join the search today. ‌ Elsewhere in Barcelona, a woman tragically lost her life after a strenuous shift cleaning the city's streets. As reported by El País, the cleaner was working in the Raval district of Ciutat Vella during the day's peak heat. She spent a gruelling eight hours outside in temperatures exceeding 30C. Over the weekend, southern Spain, especially around Seville, was predicted to hit a scorching 42C, while the French Mediterranean coast reached a blistering 40C on Saturday – similar temperatures were experienced in southern Italy and Sardinia. On Tuesday, the UK had its hottest day of the year so far as temperatures exceeded 34C, with new weather maps showing where the next heatwave is set to bring 36C. Starting from today, we will experience cooler conditions, with highs reaching the mid-20s across the country - less warm than the past few days. But the cold conditions are likely to be replaced by another heatwave in less than two weeks, according to the latest weather maps. On July 14, parts of the UK could experience temperatures as hot as 36C - with even the Scottish Highlands seeing highs of 25C. The maps, from WXCharts, show that areas around London and Southampton will be the warmest, with maximum temperatures oscillating between 35 and 36C.

UK tourists warned as Spain to be 'hotter than Caribbean' at key holiday time

Spain is preparing for another scorching end to May, with temperatures in the southern regions expected to reach 40C (104F) due to high-pressure zones and a surge of hot, dry air causing temperatures to rise more than 10C above the seasonal average. This heatwave arrives almost exactly three years after parts of Spain recorded their hottest May since records began, with temperatures at Seville airport hitting 41C. Rubén del Campo, a spokesperson for Spain's meteorological office, Aemet, said: "The last week of May will see a high-temperature episode across a good part of the peninsula, with the kind of temperatures normally seen in high summer, especially from Wednesday,". Read more: Foreign Office warns UK tourists "In some southern parts of the peninsula, we could see maximum temperatures of more than 40C, and the temperature won't drop below 20C in that region or in Mediterranean areas. We're talking about maximum temperatures that are between five and 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. In some areas, the temperatures will be more than 10 degrees above normal on Thursday." Del Campo attributed the soaring temperatures to high-pressure areas over the peninsula – "which guarantee stable weather with few clouds and a lot of sun" – and the arrival of a mass of dry, warm air over the peninsula from North Africa. He noted that the most impacted areas would be south-east Spain, its central region, and the Ebro Valley in the north-east of the country. The two hottest days this week – likely Thursday and Friday – are predicted to see temperatures soar to 35C in central and northern regions and 40C along the Guadalquivir River in Andalucía. The heatwave is expected to persist until at least Saturday, when atmospheric instability could usher in clouds, dust clouds, and a drop in temperatures. Spain's highest ever temperature was recorded in August 2021, when the mercury in the Andalucían town of Montoro, near Córdoba, hit 47.4C. A 2022 Aemet study revealed that the onset of 30C temperatures across Spain and the Balearic islands had arrived an average of 20 to 40 days earlier over the past 71 years. "The summer is eating up the spring," Del Campo told El País at the time. "What's happening fits perfectly with a situation where you have a warmer planet," he said, adding that the rise in temperatures was a "direct and palpable [consequence] of climate change ... The climate in Spain isn't the one we used to know. It's got more extreme."

The "Grey's Anatomy" star, 55, reflected that the "stars really have aligned for me my whole life" as she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 29. Her husband Chris Ivery was present to help Pompeo celebrate the honor, and the couple posed for photos with their kids Stella, 15, and Eli, 8. "This is a million miles from where I ever thought I would be," she said. "I've learned how to be here, how to stand here, how to enjoy all of this because of the people in my life, because they've taught me so much." One of those people was "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes, who delivered remarks praising Pompeo as a "living, breathing icon." TV viewers just can't quit 'Grey's Anatomy': Why star Ellen Pompeo doesn't want to either The legendary TV producer recalled having lunch with Pompeo when casting her as Meredith Grey on the long-running ABC medical drama, after which she wrote in her journal that the actress "will lay you out with the truth, up, down and sideways." "I was absolutely thrilled and a little bit terrified because it's rare to meet somebody like her," Rhimes said. "Very few people actually are who they present themselves to be, but Ellen is exactly who she says she is, and you're one of a kind." Rhimes continued that although she created Meredith Grey, the actress "is Meredith Grey, and not just on the soundstage," adding that she is "fierce and funny and thoughtful and caring," and the "TV landscape is forever changed for the better by having you shining in it." Pompeo has starred on "Grey's Anatomy," TV's longest-running primetime medical drama, since 2005. "Grey's Anatomy" star Debbie Allen also spoke at the ceremony and said that "I don't know anybody like" Pompeo, a "great mother and an incredible friend." Why Ellen Pompeo feared her latest television role could be 'Cancel City' "Grey's Anatomy" is currently airing its 21st season. In a recent interview with El País, Pompeo said she doesn't plan to leave anytime soon, telling the outlet, "That would make no sense. Emotionally or financially.
