EastEnders' Linda Carter makes life-changing decision after 11 years
EastEnders' Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) makes the life-changing decision to call time on her 11 years as landlady of The Queen Vic next week, but there's one obstacle standing in the way of her plan – her mum Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe). Linda has been co-owner of the Walford boozer since she and then-husband Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) debuted on the BBC soap at the end of 2013. She currently owns The Vic with Elaine, who came on board in 2023, buying Mick's share from his new wife Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) following his presumed drowning. Recently, recovering alcoholic Linda has been struggling to run the pub single-handedly, as Elaine has been behaving erratically since her split from husband George Knight (Colin Salmon) earlier this month. With rumours currently swirling that previous landlady Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) is poised to take the reins of the Vic once more, there are tense scenes next week when Linda tells her mum she wants to sell her half of the pub. Reeling from the bombshell, Elaine tries to convince Linda to rethink her decision, but a furious argument breaks out. After Linda retreats to the café, she bumps into George, who encourages her to see the situation from her mum's point of view. But when Elaine spies their conversation, she becomes convinced they are plotting behind her back. Trying to take charge of the situation, Elaine meets with a bank manager, but it doesn't go to plan, and so later puts a proposal to her grandson Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) to become a silent partner, but he refuses. Feeling deflated and emotional, Elaine loses it in The Vic and orders all the punters out, before getting into another blazing row with Linda – but the stress of recent events becomes too much, and she suddenly collapses. Elaine later tries to play her collapse off as a panic attack, but it's clear something more is at play. Felling guilty, Linda reasons she should keep her share of The Vic for Elaine's sake, but Johnny is adamant she should sell – but as they return to the bar, Elaine has collapsed again. Is Elaine OK, or could this be part of a plan to stop Linda selling her share? More Trending Of course, this is not the first time Linda has sold the boozer – back in 2020, Sharon Watts (Letita Dean) bought it from her and Mick, as he sought to get his beloved L away from the temptation of alcohol. However, following Linda's subsequent affair with Max Branning (Jake Wood), she convinced Sharon to sell the pub back to her and Mick, realising it was what they needed to get their marriage back on track. Trains, planes, raptors, and pianos. Tributes to polymath musician
Died: May 2, 2025 Elaine Gould, who has died aged 71, was a concert pianist who performed throughout the UK and Europe under her maiden name – most notably at the Mackintosh Queen's Cross Building in Glasgow where she received a standing ovation for her performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, a piece she went on to record. But she also, under her married name, Elaine Scott, had a surprisingly varied private life. She was born into a musical family. Her father was Morton Gould, referred to in his own Herald obituary as 'Glasgow's Mr Harpsichord, and her late mother was the composer Janetta Gould. Elaine and her two sisters, Valerie and Carol, all went on to train professionally as musicians. Elaine was a first study clarinettist but quickly switched to piano as her preferred instrument. In her early career she supplemented her meagre earnings with work as a technical editor but seeing a future in IT she obtained a second qualification in computing and this led to a full-time career in IT – rising to become an IT manager. Marriage to Peter, a lawyer but also a trained bass-baritone with whom she performed on several occasions, followed by birth of her daughter, Amanda Jane, a few years down the line led her to picking up her musical career and culminated in her being appointed president of the prestigious Edinburgh Society of Musicians. Her career almost ground to a halt in June 2007 when she shattered her right wrist in a freak accident. It was typical of her, however, that after multiple surgeries and extensive physiotherapy she returned to the concert platform less than a year later with a programme which took no prisoners. Somewhere in the middle of all this she had obtained a degree in pure mathematics as well as her Master of Music, become a skilled falconer who flew raptors in public display, learned to drive a stream train, flew a plane, showed Great Danes, steered a power boat, climbed the occasional mountain and tramped the length and breadth of Mull (as well as a few other islands including Barra). She slowed down a little when her beloved granddaughter Abigail Rachel-Lily, Abi for short, entered her life but it was a life sadly cut short by cancer and Elaine died within a few short months of her diagnosis. Although primarily a soloist – specialising in the works of Franz Liszt but with a broad repertoire ranging from Beethoven and Bartok to Schubert and Schumann – she partnered several clarinettists (having played most of the standard works herself as a clarinettist she was a sensitive and supportive partner). She also had a successful playing and recording partnership in Lieder with the late Lewis Allan (their performance of Dichterliebe being a particular joy). Her husband always maintained that he was a much better singer when accompanied by his wife – even though musical theatre was not altogether to her taste. In a tribute from the Edinburgh Society of Musicians, the governing council noted, with deep regret, the news that their president had died after a short but severe illness, bravely borne. Read more Jim Prime, widely admired keyboard lynchpin of Deacon Blue Sea captain who oversaw dramatic launches and rescues dies Tributes to senior figure in fire service whose great love was piping | The Herald Their company secretary reported that her presidency, which began in 2017, had seen the society grow and thrive with remarkable vigour, in a number of ways: in membership, in its programmes of recitals, in its reputation among young musicians as an important showcase for their talents, and in its service to music teachers and musical societies using its facilities. The crowning achievement of her time in office has perhaps been the accolade of royal patronage, bestowed through acceptance by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh of the role of patron of the society. Elaine brought enormous energy and commitment to the discharge of her presidential tasks, to which she applied her unusual combination of talents developed in a double career as both a senior business executive and an accomplished piano recitalist and teacher. With her husband Peter, also a member of council who for several years took on the heavy burden of combining the treasurer-ship and the secretary-ship of the society, she travelled through to Edinburgh from their home in Newton Mearns every Saturday during the society's 35-week recital season to introduce performers and lead brief post-recital conversations. Her leadership also brought the society, unharmed, through the major interruption of all its activities occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic. Membership was kept alive by a weekly series of living-room recitals posted on YouTube and the performance salon was re-purposed as a streaming venue for musicians struggling to keep their careers alive. Where other music societies were in danger of going to the wall, the society, as a registered small business, was not only able to maintain a healthy bank balance but donate a five-figure sum to the Musician's Benevolent Fund for the relief of Scottish musicians who had lost their livelihoods. Elaine Gould is survived by her husband of 43 years, her daughter, her granddaughter, two step-daughters, three step-grandchildren and her two sisters. She also leaves behind a legacy of high achievement and a wealth of fond memories held by all who knew her. EastEnders fans fear Elaine Peacock may be killed off the soap after spotting two eerie clues in latest episodes which they believe to be foreshadowing the moment EastEnders fans have spotted an eerie clue in recent scenes - which they believe may be hinting towards the character's demise. It comes after spoilers for next week reveal that the character will be seen collapsing twice in a terrifying health scare. In next week's EastEnders, the fallout from Linda revealing she wants to sell the Vic continues. As Elaine tries to convince Linda to reconsider her decision, a huge row breaks out, and Linda retreats to the café to speak with George. Elaine later spots their interaction from The Vic and jumps to the conclusion that the pair are plotting behind her back. The stress of The Vic and her marriage breakdown with George becomes all too much for Elaine, who collapses during yet another row with Linda. But will Elaine be okay? This week, George and Elaine were seen getting into a huge spat over ownership of the pub. During the huge argument, Elaine was heard saying to George: "I'm going to keep this pub until the day I die." Elsewhere, in yesterday's episode when Linda brought up the idea of selling, an angry Elaine exclaimed: "Over my dead body!" It's been revealed that the Vic will be seeing new owners in the near future. Now, fans believe the two lines from Elaine, plus her upcoming health scare, are foreshadowing towards the character's death. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan shared a screenshot of Elaine's two interactions, alongside the caption: "THE FORESHADOWING! Are they killing off Elaine?" "The 2nd time this week that Elaine has referenced "Death" in her dialogue. We know Elaine collapses next week but could it lead to a lot worse then that?" Another responded: "I noticed this. A death looms," as a third said: "Well she is due to collapse at some point next week isn't she? Maybe this is the beginning of the end for Elaine?" Months before the tragic death of Martin Fowler back in February, eagle eyed fans had spotted clues that his time was going to come to an end. Weeks before his untimely death, the whole Square gathered in the Queen Vic to watch a old episode of Martin's dad Arthur Fowler starring in a game show back in the day. In the clip, which Ruby Allen had dug up, his late mum Pauline was also present. Elsewhere, fans were also convinced the soap was 'hinting' towards Martin's death, as Honey ordered shots of Death Throes when celebrating the character getting his fruit and veg stall back. Will Elaine be okay?

Luxury Sydney apartment sells for $141.55m, setting national home price record
Multimillionaire Yan Zhang has paid $141.55 million for Australia's most expensive residence, a penthouse overlooking Sydney Harbour. The mystery purchaser can finally be revealed of the top three floors of Lendlease's One Sydney Harbour development at Barangaroo South, after settling on the home on Thursday. The off-the-plan sale, inked in 2019, is an amalgamation of the two-storey penthouse of the Renzo Piano-designed building, which is for himself, and a sub-penthouse directly below, for friends and family to stay in. It tops all of Australia's previous confirmed house and apartment records, including Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar 's $130 million Elaine sale, which settled to a consortium of developers last week who are planning to carve it up and sell it off in four lots. It also eclipses Crown Resort's One Barangaroo circa $80 million penthouse next door, which is widely tipped to have sold to James Packer 's lieutenant Lawrence Myers last week. The previous national house price record was held in conjunction with Uig Lodge, which was set by the tech billionaire Farquhar after paying $130 million in late 2022 for the Scottish baronial mansion, which he bought from rag traders Steven and Carol Moss. That sale smashed the previous record holder by some $30 million set by his counterpart Atlassian's other founder Mike Cannon-Brookes. The tech billionaire and his wife Annie purchased Fairwater in Point Piper for $100 million, ending more than a century of Fairfax family ownership. A mansion in Melbourne's Toorak also sold this year for at least nine figures, although is reportedly unlikely to top the national record. Sources have put the sale price anywhere from $115 million to $135 million.
