Anwar lands in Paris for his inaugural visit as Prime Minister
PARIS: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will spend two days here on his inaugural visit to this European capital as Prime Minister. The visit, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, includes a tete-a-tete between the two leaders, followed by a delegation meeting at the Elysee Palace. Discussions will cover the overall state of Malaysia-France relations, with emphasis on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, defence, education and tourism, among other topics. Both leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including Asean-France Development Partnership, Asean-EU Dialogue Relations and the situation in West Asia. Malaysia's ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim and Defence Attache Captain Zainol Ahmad, as well as French ambassador to Malaysia Axel Cruau received the Prime Minister on his arrival at Paris Orly Airport. Eldeen Husaini said the Prime Minister's two-day visit has been elevated to an official visit. 'This reflects the importance of diplomatic ties between the two countries,' he told a press conference. Eldeen Husaini said as Asean Chair this year, the Prime Minister is also expected to bring up regional issues in his discussion with Macron such as the South China Sea, the South-East Asian economy and Malaysia's role as a neutral country. He said Anwar's visit is also to explore business collaboration opportunities through a roundtable discussion with France's industry captains. 'A total of 180 companies will participate in this session, which will also be attended by industry players from Malaysia,' he said. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture titled 'South-East Asia and Europe: Recalibrating the Terms of Engagement' at Sorbonne University. 'Among guests invited to the Prime Minister's lecture include ambassadors, think tanks, students and local media practitioners,' said Eldeen Husaini. France is one of Malaysia's top five trading partners in the European Union and a key source of FDI in high-tech and strategic sectors. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and France amounted to RM15.95bil. From January to May this year, trade between Malaysia and France was recorded at RM6.26bil. While in Paris, the Prime Minister will also engage with the Malaysian diaspora. After France, Anwar is heading to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has embarked on an inaugural official visit to France from July 3 to 4 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. Malaysia's Ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the visit carries an official status and signifies France's strong commitment towards its diplomatic ties with Malaysia since Anwar assumed premiership in 2022. "This official visit status is also significant for the continued strengthening of our bilateral diplomatic ties," he said to the Malaysian media through an online conference from Paris on Wednesday. Eldeen Husaini said Anwar would be received by the French top leadership at the airport, followed by an inspection of a guard of honour and an engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in France. Anwar is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Macron at the Élysée Palace, with key agenda items including trade, investment, renewable energy, semiconductors, defence, education, digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI). "Malaysia expects this official visit will boost investor confidence in exploring new investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in the nuclear and clean energy sectors," he told the Malaysian media in an online briefing from Paris on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Malaysia also expresses support for France's effort to host a conference to work towards a solution for the Palestine-Israel conflict and discuss regional issues such as the South China Sea and the stability of Southeast Asia in Malaysia's capacity as the 2025 Asean Chair. Eldeen Husaini said a lecture by the prime minister titled Southeast Asia and Europe: Recalibrating the Terms of Engagement will be held at Sorbonne University, a world-renowned institution in the intellectual and cultural spheres. "He will also attend a session with 250 members of the Malaysian diaspora, deliver a lecture, and attend Friday prayer with Muslim community leaders at the Grand Mosque of Paris, one of the oldest mosques in France," he said. "This visit aims to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, drive national economic growth, and enhance Malaysia's competitiveness in the global supply chain," he added. Anwar is accompanied on this visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Also joining the delegation is Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. France remains one of Malaysia's top five trading partners within the European Union. In 2024, bilateral trade totalled RM15.95 billion (US$3.63 billion), with RM6.26 billion (US$1.49 billion) recorded between January and May this year. Following his visit to France, Anwar will head to Brazil to attend the BRICS Leaders Summit from July 5 to 7. French travel agents discover Sabah's appeal

Their short but meaningful stay included immersive activities such as jungle trekking on Gaya Island, a sunset cruise, cultural performances over dinner, and a visit to the iconic Mari Mari Cultural Village. Many described the experience as insightful and said they were keen to return and explore more of what Sabah has to offer. 'Sabah is on the right path,' said one of the delegates, Andreas Gantenbein, who is the managing director of AERTiCKET for Belgium, France and Switzerland. 'This trip gave us a good introduction to what Sabah can offer. We appreciated the hospitality as well as the effort to share the local culture with us,' he added. Malaysia's Ambassador to France, Datuk Eldeen Husaini, who accompanied the group, said the response from the French agents reaffirmed Sabah's strong potential as a destination for the European market. 'Sabah has what it takes to attract more French travellers, and the embassy in Paris will continue to support efforts to promote Sabah, especially in highlighting its rich cultural heritage and natural wonders,' he said. On Tuesday, the Sabah Tourism Board hosted the group to a sunset cruise and dinner at the Gaya Island Resort, joined by Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. In addressing the visiting agents, Joniston who is also chairman of Sabah Tourism Board expressed optimism over the growing French market. 'We are seeing more visitors from France coming to Sabah. From January to April this year, we received 2,116 French visitors, and that's an increase from 1,669 during the same period last year. 'In 2024, we recorded 5,921 French arrivals, and we want to see this grow as Sabah is slowly finding its place in the hearts of French and European travellers,' he said. Joniston acknowledged that safety remains a top concern for many travellers, especially first-timers, and reaffirmed Sabah's commitment to ensuring the state remains a safe and welcoming destination. 'Our security presence, especially in the east coast, is not because it's unsafe, but to make sure it stays safe. This is how we protect our people, our visitors, and the places they come to see,' he said. Joniston, who also serves as patron of Sail Malaysia Borneo, mentioned that events like Sail Malaysia show the confidence international travellers have in Sabah's safety and hospitality. This year, the sailing rally will bring over 30 yachts with participants from more than 15 countries. They will explore Sabah from July to early September. 'Sail Malaysia offers a unique way to explore the state from the sea, where participants will get the opportunity to discover Sabah's coastal and inland attractions,' said Joniston, while inviting French agents to learn more about it. Present were Tourism Malaysia Director of the International Promotion Division (AERO) Akbal Setia, Tourism Malaysia Paris director Zalina Ahmad, and Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit.

Cambodia, Malaysia vow to strengthen military cooperation, partnership

The commitment was made during a meeting held here between the RCA's commander Gen. Mao Sophan and Gen. Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, chief of the Malaysian Army. Both commanders highly valued the close and longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Malaysia, and expressed strong satisfaction with the continued cooperation and mutual support between the two armies.
