Thousands turn out for Ladies' Night at Carlisle Racecourse
SUMMER showers didn't deter the crowds on Saturday evening, as thousands packed into Carlisle Racecourse to celebrate the ever-popular Caledonia Park Ladies' Night. The event, which boasts the only all-female racing card in the country, is a standout date in the Cumbrian social calendar. Advertisement While the stands sparkled with colour and style, the action on the track was thrilling. Eight races saw eight different jockeys claim victory, with wins for Pippa Brown, Gina Mangan, Josephine Gordon, Poppy Scott, Joanna Mason, Freya Williams, and Elizabeth Gale. Gale, from Penrith, rode to victory aboard Showtime Mahomes, the horse featured in the ITV documentary It's Showtime, which tells the uplifting story of how the horse helped its syndicate of owners through personal challenges. Meanwhile, Freya Williams claimed victory in the second annual Stable Staff Charity Race - an event that offers racing staff, who wouldn't normally get the chance to ride competitively, the rare opportunity to race on the track, all in support of Racing Welfare. But it's not all about the racing. Racegoers often spend months preparing their outfits for the occasion and this year was no exception. Advertisement Among hundreds of entries in the highly anticipated Style Awards, the top prize went to local Carlisle resident Jessie Gray. Jessie wowed judges in a vintage-inspired 1950s dress and a handmade boater hat, which she had decorated herself to complement the theme of the hen party she was attending at the Durdar Road venue. "It took a couple of months to plan my outfit because I wanted to look nice for my best friend as we're here for her do!' Reflecting on the evening, Carlisle Racecourse general manager Helen Willis said: 'We had such a fantastic evening for Caledonia Park Ladies' Night, with so much going on across the site! "We're incredibly proud to host the country's only all-female racing card - it's a wonderful celebration of the depth of talent within the sport. 'We're also hugely grateful to our sponsors, Caledonia Park, who provided the amazing prizes for our Style Awards, which were so well supported.' This year marked the first time the fixture was held on a Saturday night, having moved from its traditional slot on a Monday in August.

Cheltenham Festival winner's stepdaughter on hot streak commits future to Flat
Elizabeth Gale, whose stepfather rode One Man to victory in the Champion Chase, has ridden ten winners since she switched from the jumps in May Rookie rider Elizabeth Gale has committed her future to the Flat after riding her first winner at Ascot. The 23-year-old followed her stepfather Brian Harding, who rode One Man to victory in the 1998 Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, into the jumps sphere as a teenager, riding 11 winners. She rode her last winner over hurdles at Ffos Las in May but since switching focus to the Flat she has rattled off ten wins, including one in Ireland. Gale had her first ride at Royal Ascot last month and returned to the track on Friday to score for the first time at the track on Knights Gold in a £20,000 handicap for Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, to whom she is now apprenticed. She made her switch with the intention of continuing to ride under both Flat and jumps codes but has decided to concentrate solely on the Flat. 'This will be my main focus over the summer and then I will look forward to the all-weather season over the winter,' said Gale. 'I might still have a few rides in bumpers where needed but for now it will be solely on the Flat side of things and improving my riding. 'When I was riding as a jump jockey things were very stop and start. Obviously there is a lot less jump racing so I would go through phases of getting momentum going and then have a quiet period, like every other jump jockey in the weighing room. 'Since moving to the Flat I've realised how much racing there is and how much opportunity and for me personally my riding improves the more regularly I am doing it. There are so many meetings that I am finding it a lot easier to improve. As an athlete I can get better quicker. 'I went into jumps because that was what I was brought up in. My stepdad won an Irish Grand National and Queen Mother Champion Chase so that's why.' Gale has climbed up sixth place in the apprentice championship but believes her best shot will come in 2026. 'This year has been going so well that anything I get will be a bonus,' she said. 'Don't get me wrong I am still hungry for winners but I think with the 5lb claim next year would be the time have a real go at the apprentice championship.'

Horse racing tips: ‘She relishes every yard of this trip' – Templegate's 3-1 NAP can land a quickfire double
TEMPLEGATE tackles Wednesday's racing confident of building the bank for a huge few days at Newmarket's July Festival. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. LADY MARIKO (5.10 Yarmouth, nap) There was a lot to like about the way she got her head in front at Wetherby last time. She came from a good way back and battled right to the line, relishing every yard of this distance. The handicapper has been fair with a 2lb rise in the weights and she looks capable of improvement. Noisy Music looks the main danger after a good run on the all-weather at Southwell last time out. BEACH POINT (5.50 Kempton, nb) He made it six places from his past seven races when second at Leicester last time. This looks a good chance to get his head back in front with the step up in distance likely to suit. He has a top pilot in Mason Paetel on board in this apprentice race. ROGUE ENDEAVOUR (7.10 Ffos Las, treble) He went down in a tight finish over a similar trip at Bath 14 days ago. He likes to go from the front and his capable claimer Elizabeth Gale is full value for her 7lb. TOMMY'S PROMISE (4.10 Yarmouth, Lucky 15) He has few miles on the clock and just over half a length away when second here last time. He is proven over this trip and looks dangerous again from his basement handicap mark of 49. . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:
