Ekhart Mayor Rod Roberson says 'city is heartbroken' by deadly mass shooting June 15
In a statement released Sunday afternoon, June 15, Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson extended his condolences to families of the person killed and the 11 people wounded in a mass shooting that occurred early Sunday morning. "My heart aches for our community," he said. "Once again, our beloved city has been tragically stricken by senseless gun violence." In an earlier press release, the Elkhart Police Department said multiple people fired handguns in the West Garfield Avenue/Benham Avenue area of Elkhart early Sunday morning. Police received a call of shots fired in the 300 block of West Garfield at about 1:11 a.m. June 15. Twelve people were either taken to area hospitals or showed up on their own, said police, who were said to be processing evidence in a large area between the 200 and 400 blocks of West Garfield. Some of the injured have already been treated and released, according to the first press release. "The pain and ripple effects of this devastating event will undoubtedly be felt deeply across our entire community for a long time," Roberson said in his statement. "Our city is heartbroken, and I, personally, am devastated by this profound loss and trauma." The mayor also praised the city's first responders "for their immediate and courageous actions. Their swift efforts in the face of such a horrific scene undoubtedly saved many more lives, and their dedication is truly commendable." Elkhart also was the scene of a mass shooting Jan. 27 at the Martin's Super Market on East Jackson Boulevard. In that incident, Juan M. Sanchez, 54, who had moved to Elkhart from Illinois in April 2024, shot and killed a store employee, Annasue Rocha, 19, and a store customer, Benjamin S. Jeffrey, 49. Two Elkhart Police officers, Corporal Paul Vandenburg and Patrolman Ethan Pasternak, were also injured when Sanchez shot at them after they confronted Sanchez outside the store. The officers returned fire, killing Sanchez. They were released from the hospital after being treated for their injuries, and the Elkhart County Prosecutor's office ruled their use of deadly forced justified. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation, police said, asking anyone with information, video, photos or eyewitness accounts about the June 15 shootings to call the homicide unit at 574-295-2825 or Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP. 1 dead, 11 injured in Elkhart shooting
ELKHART, Ind. – 1 person is dead and 11 are injured after an early morning shooting in Elkhart. Police say they were dispatched to W Garfield Ave on reports of shots fired when they found several victims. Those were transported to area hospitals via ambulance. Police say other victims also arrived at hospitals on their own. Crime scene investigators and officers are combing the area for evidence and the investigation is ongoing. 1 person killed, 11 others hurt in mass shooting in Elkhart, Indiana, police say
One person was killed and 11 others were wounded overnight in a mass shooting in Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart police said that around 1:11 a.m., officers responded to the 300 block of West Garfield Avenue for a shots-fired call. Investigation into the incident revealed that 12 people were either taken to or arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds. One of the victims was later pronounced dead. Some of the wounded victims were treated and released, according to police. It is unclear what led up to the shooting, but initial investigations indicated that multiple people discharged firearms during the incident. Police said officers and crime scene technicians processed the area between the 200 and 400 blocks of West Garfield Avenue and collected evidence in the surrounding area. Fifth suspect in armed robbery scheme sentenced
GOSHEN — The last of five young adults accused of carrying out an armed robbery scheme in September has been sentenced. Kaleb Goodwin, 18, received a total sentence of 20 years, with six years suspended, after pleading guilty to two counts of armed robbery. He was sentenced Thursday in Elkhart County Circuit Court after entering a plea agreement in April. Goodwin was charged with the Level 3 felony along with Issac Duckworth, 18, Alora Layton, 18, Carrie Layton, 20, and E'Marri Redmond, 19. All have been sentenced on plea agreements after this week's hearing. The five suspects were arrested after a man and a woman came to the Elkhart Police Department to report that they had just been robbed. They said they came to Carrie Layton's apartment and were approached by armed men wearing masks, who struck them and took some personal belongings. 'Armed robbery is a very, very serious crime, it's a very personal crime,' Judge Michael Christofeno told Goodwin. 'In particular, your two victims were traumatized. This went way beyond you placing them in fear.' The victims said the masked men opened the doors to their vehicle and one of them put a knife to the woman's knee before moving it up to her ribs. He also struck the woman three times with the extended magazine that was in his pistol, according to police. The woman said the robbers took her knife and possibly something from the center console, while the man said they took a vape pen and a wallet that contained cash, a bank card and Social Security cards belonging to him and his son. The woman suffered headaches, trouble sleeping and possibly seizures as a result of her head injury, according to Elkhart County Deputy Prosecutor Kathleen Claeys. She said she believed Goodwin was remorseful and noted that he and his codefendants were very forthcoming when speaking with law enforcement about the crime. Police arrested the five suspects after viewing security footage from River Run Apartments and searching the residence where Carrie Layton and her mother lived. Police questioned the five suspects and learned that they came up with the robbery plot together while sitting in Carrie Layton's bedroom. 'This is your first felony conviction, but as I told your codefendants, you picked a whopper of a first felony,' Christofeno said. 'The only way this could have gone worse is if somebody pulled the trigger, and one of your victims or your codefendants ended up being shot.' Goodwin's attorney, Michael Banik, told the court he had made good use of his time while being held in the juvenile detention facility in Logansport. He said Goodwin sought substance abuse treatment and earned a high school diploma and a welding certificate. Goodwin told the judge he wants to continue his treatment and improve himself. 'Wherever I end up going, I want to make myself a better man,' he said.
