Queensboro Dance Festival celebrates borough's culture and community
The diverse culture of Queens is on display at the Queensboro Dance Festival. A mechanic by day, Felix Perez sits at the sewing machine after work, turning traditional Mexican fabrics into dresses and skirts. The garments are costumes for Manhatitlan, a dance group made up of his family and friends. "When I see the ladies and my daughters dancing with these garments, I feel so happy," the Puebla native said. Focusing on regional Mexican folkloric styles, Manhatitlan brings generations together. "We don't get to go to Mexico as often as we would like to, and so with this, we bring a little piece of home to our home," daughter Jazmin Perez-Carvente said. "My parents helped us with it, and my sister, she was like the brains of the whole project." The sisters recruit new members through church, school and work. "It's a project, but it's also a community," daughter Karla Perez said. "Everybody's welcome," mother Rosalba Perez said. Manhatitlan is one of 21 groups in this year's Queensboro Dance Festival, a series of free shows ranging from Indian classical to Chinese contemporary, popping up at plazas and in parks across the borough all summer long. "We wanted to be a platform that represented the underrepresented dance cultures here," festival founder Karesia Batan said. "We are reflecting the cultures in every neighborhood that we're in as a point of connection but as well as a place for cultural exchange." Jazmin Perez-Carvente says the festival has helped Manhatitlan grow. "The Queensboro Dance Festival gives us exposure to whole other communities, and they find interest," she said. Sharing her culture through dance has brought her closer to her roots. "I feel more alive and proud," she said. The festival began June 7 and runs through Sept. 13. Tate releases the official track list for her forthcoming third studio album, So Close to What, and it includes a collab with her boyfriend called 'I Know Love.' Lindsay Lohan is opening up about why she left Hollywood for a new life in Dubai. Lohan, 39, spent the majority of her young career in the spotlight attempting to evade the paparazzi. Now, she's traded in the flashing lights for a "very normal life" away from the scrutiny of Los Angeles. "It's just far away from Hollywood. And I live a very normal life," Lohan said during an appearance on "LIVE with Kelly and Mark." "There's no worry of like, I can't go eat at this place because someone's going to take a picture of my son. It's just, I feel very safe." "It's not legal," she explained, of paparazzi taking photos. "You can't even take a picture of someone else if you're at a restaurant. You have to ask the person. Which is a big difference. The privacy is unique." Lohan previously revealed the lack of privacy in Los Angeles left her stressed out. "It's hard in L.A. Even taking my son to the park in L.A., I get stressed. I'm like, 'Are there cameras?' In New York, there's no worry; no one bothers us," the "Mean Girls" star told Elle magazine in May. Everyone has their own thing going on. There's a different kind of energy in New York. I'd rather have downtime in New York than I would in L.A." "But the nice thing about L.A. is, I like space [and you get that here]. But I'm thinking as I'm saying this, the funny thing is, in Dubai I get all of those things. I get the privacy, I get the peace, I get the space. I don't have to worry there. I feel safe." Tom Brady takes a swipe at Gisele Bundchen over their divorce in letter about providing for his family
Tom Brady has seemingly taken a subtle dig at his supermodel ex-wife Gisele Bundchen in his latest newsletter about providing for his family. The NFL great, a seven-time Super Bowl winner, split from his wife of 13 years in October 2023, months after dramatically reversing his decision to retire from football. After their split was announced, Bundchen repeatedly alluded to her unhappiness at how much Brady focused on his sporting career at the cost of his family, with his unretirement said to be the tipping point. Now, in a newsletter Brady has recently started writing to his fans, the 47-year-old has said that he viewed his career as a central part of being a good father to his three children. 'I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family,' Brady wrote. 'I chose to do it by playing football.' He continued: 'My dedication to the sport, the hours of practice, the moments when I was laser focused - those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession and teaching, by example, what it takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments, what it takes to be a great teammate; and showing them, also by example, that work is a big part of all of our lives.' Bundchen was said to have encouraged Brady to retire the first time around amid fears for his health in the game, as well as wanting them to spend more time together as a family. 'Obviously, I have my concerns - this is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present,' she told Elle in September 2022. 'I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for (them). He needs to follow his joy, too.' During his career, Brady had often spoken about how grateful he was for Bundchen's role keeping their family together. In October 2021, he said on his 'Let's Go' podcast: 'My wife has held down the house for a long time now, and I think there's things that she wants to accomplish.' Bundchen and Brady had two kids - Benjamin and Vivian - together, while Brady has another son, Jack, from a previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan. A seven-time Super Bowl winner, Brady is widely accepted as the best to ever play in the NFL Bundchen also said in that September 2022 interview: 'I've done my part, which is be there for Tom. I moved to Boston, and I focused on creating a cocoon and a loving environment for my children to grow up in and to be there supporting him and his dreams. 'Seeing my children succeed and become the beautiful little humans that they are, seeing him succeed, and being fulfilled in his career - it makes me happy. At this point in my life, I feel like I've done a good job on that.'
