The 25-year-old is a proven winner having claimed league titles in four of her five seasons there and added a second Champions League trophy in 2022. Carpenter has also made 87 appearances for the Matildas after making her debut aged just 15 against Vietnam and looms as a long-term leader set to enhance her credentials at Chelsea. 'I'm really excited about this new challenge, it's a new adventure,' Carpenter said. 'It feels like the right move for me, and I can't wait to get started and give my all for this club. 'I'm very proud to join such a big club, one of the biggest in women's football. Chelsea have enjoyed so much success in England, and I'm delighted to now be a part of it.' Carpenter recently got married to Dutch player Danielle van de Donk — the couple met playing for Lyon but they will now be rivals in the English League after van de Donk moved to the London City Lionesses. Chelsea's head of football Paul Green said the club had wanted to get Carpenter on-board for some time. 'Ellie is a player who we have tracked for many years. She has a lot of experience for someone of her age and has won numerous titles in her career, including the Champions League,' Green said on the club's website. 'She is an athletic fullback who loves to get forward. We are excited to see how she continues to develop and what she will add to an already talented squad of players. 'Everyone at Chelsea warmly welcomes Ellie to the club, and we wish her every success during her time as a Blue.'

Wife becomes direct rival as Matildas teammate makes switch to join Sam Kerr
Ellie Carpenter and wife Danielle van de Donk have gone from long-time teammates to direct rivals after the Matildas star joined Sam Kerr at Chelsea on a four-year deal. Chelsea announced the signing of Matildas defender Carpenter on Wednesday, which will see her become club teammates with Kerr. "Ellie is a player who we have tracked for many years," said Paul Green, the head of women's football at Chelsea. "She has a lot of experience for someone of her age and has won numerous titles in her career, including the Champions League. "She is an athletic fullback who loves to get forward. We are excited to see how she continues to develop and what she will add to an already talented squad of players. Everyone at Chelsea warmly welcomes Ellie to the club, and we wish her every success during her time as a Blue." Carpenter is leaving French club Lyon after six years, where she won Champions League titles in 2020 and 2022 and met her wife van de Donk. The Aussie's move to England comes after van de Donk recently signed with London City Lionesses for their inaugural season in the Women's Super League. Carpenter and van de Donk first met when the Netherlands international joined Lyon in 2021, and they married last month in a lavish ceremony in France. After five years as teammates they'll become direct rivals next season. As well as joining Kerr at Chelsea, Carpenter will also reunite with coach Sonia Bompastor. The new Blues coach joined Chelsea last year after she led Lyon from 2021 to 2024, helping Carpenter and the French club to three-straight league titles. 'I'm really excited about this new challenge, it's a new adventure,' said Carpenter. 'It feels like the right move for me, and I can't wait to get started and give my all for this club. I'm very proud to join such a big club, one of the biggest in women's football. Chelsea have enjoyed so much success in England, and I'm delighted to now be a part of it.' Carpenter became the first Australian player to win a Women's Champions League medal in 2020, and added a second under Bompastor in 2022. She claimed claimed league titles in four of her five seasons in France, and has made 87 appearances for the Matildas. Mewis and Kerr recently welcomed baby boy Jagger, after Mewis stepped away during her pregnancy. On Tuesday, the American international announced her departure from West Ham, but didn't reveal a new club. Mewis only made four appearances for the Hammers since joining late in 2023, after her time at the club was disrupted by injuries before she fell pregnant. "Even though my time at West Ham was not what I envisioned, I still learned so much and met so many amazing people," she wrote on social media. "Everyone, but especially my teammates were incredibly supportive through my injury and pregnancy and I can't thank them enough for it. Nothing has been more important to me than football… but having my son has changed that. Thank you West Ham and thank you for helping me become a mom." Kristie has been unlucky with injuries since she joined us so probably hasn't played in the famous Claret and Blue as many times as she would have liked, but it's still been a total pleasure having someone of her calibre and experience within our team environment. "As Kristie starts to navigate her new norm of motherhood, we fully appreciate that her priorities have changed and so, whatever the future has in store for her and her family, I would like to wish them all the very best."

It is a good move for Carpenter, who has achieved all there is to achieve with Lyon - including multiple league titles and Champions league victory.
