Monsoon fury: Himachal Pradesh bears the brunt as cloudbursts, flash-floods create havoc

The torrential monsoon rains that hit Himachal Pradesh on June 20 have created havoc in the hill State, triggering incidents of cloud bursts, flash floods, and landslides, claiming several human lives, and disrupting normal life. The relentless monsoon has brought the State to its knees, leaving at least 16 people dead in the rain-related incidents, which include flash floods, drowning and electrocution, besides five people are still missing from June 20 till June 30. Around 35 houses have been fully or partially damaged, leaving several families homeless. The State had suffered a cumulative loss exceeding Rs 7,569 lakhs so far in the ongoing monsoon season, according to the State's Emergency Operation Center. In the past 24 hours, multiple cloud burst incidents in the State's Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu districts have been witnessed, following overnight rains that have left the State rivers in a spate. The incidents of cloud bursts and flash floods amid heavy rains have badly hit normal life across the State, resulting in loss of lives and property. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) said there has been a loss of life and property due to overnight rain and cloudbursts in the areas of Karsog, Dharmpur, Mandi Sadar, Nachan, and Saraj, which is extremely painful and concerning. 'I am in constant contact with the district administration, continuously reviewing relief and rescue operations to ensure that prompt and effective assistance reaches those in need. I humbly request the people of the state to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the administration,' he said. In neighbouring States of Punjab and Haryana, several districts received widespread heavy rainfall, even as the joint capital Chandigarh also witnessed a heavy downpour.

Two polio cases confirmed in Lakki, Bannu

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed two new cases of wild poliovirus in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts. While high-quality polio vaccination campaigns continue nationwide, certain areas-particularly in southern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa-continue to face challenges such as restricted access and difficulties in conducting house-to-house vaccination campaigns, reads a press statement issued by Emergency Operation Center (EOC) KP here on Wednesday. These access and operational hurdles leave thousands of children, particularly in south K-P at risk of exposure to poliovirus as a result of missed opportunities for vaccination. Due to ongoing access constraints and community concerns, children in UC Bakhmal Ahmad Zai (Lakki Marwat) missed out on vaccination opportunities during the February and April 2025 immunisation campaigns, resulting in immunity gaps, the statement explained. In UC Saintanga, Tehsil Wazir (Bannu), no comprehensive campaign has been implemented since October 2023. Limited access, shortage of female vaccinators, and gaps in monitoring have contributed to immunity gaps, leaving children at continued risk of poliovirus transmission. The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme is actively engaging with all stakeholders to address operational and access challenges and to enhance the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in these high-risk areas. An intensified vaccination schedule is being implemented to interrupt virus transmission and protect children from lifelong paralysis.

Death toll from Dominican Republic nightclub roof collapse climbs to 98

April 9 (UPI) -- The death toll from the roof collapse of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic climbed to 98 early Wednesday, officials said, as search-and-rescue operations continue. The announcement was made at 12:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday by the Emergency Operation Center. "With deep sorrow, we confirm that the number of deceased has risen to 98 people," the EOC said in a statement. "We extend our condolences and reaffirm our absolute commitment to each of the affected families." Identification of the deceased is the responsibility of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, the EOC said, while reminding the public to avoid spreading unofficial lists of victims and rumors. The roof of the Jet Set Club in Santo Domingo suddenly collapsed early Tuesday during a concert by merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Club owner Antonio Espaillat was out of the country when the incident occurred but was returning to the Dominican Republic "to show solidarity with the victims and their families," a statement on the club's Instagram account states. "There are not enough words to express the sorrow this event generates," Espaillat said. "What happened was devastating for all. We want you to know that we are with you, that we share your grief." Search-and-rescue crews scoured the rubble overnight Tuesday looking for survivors, according to the EOC, which said special technical teams and personnel from more than 22 public institutions, as well as heavy machinery, were working at the scene. The EOC said 155 people were transferred to local medical centers.

Health minister raises alarm over increasing polio cases in Sindh

Listen to article Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has expressed concern over the growing number of poliovirus cases in Sindh, directing authorities to submit a detailed report on families refusing vaccinations, the health ministry said on Sunday. The country has recorded six polio cases in the first three months of 2025, with four reported from Sindh, according to official data. During a visit to the provincial Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in Karachi, Mustafa Kamal called for urgent action to address vaccine refusal. 'The health minister has expressed concern over four polio cases [reported] from Sindh,' the health ministry said in a statement. 'Forty-three thousand patients in Sindh refused vaccination, out of which about 42,000 are from Karachi,' health minister was quoted as saying. The minister received a briefing on ongoing polio campaigns and the challenges authorities face. He reiterated that eradicating polio remains a national priority and urged officials to deploy all available resources to combat the disease. Polio is a highly infectious virus that causes paralysis and has no cure. Health experts stress that multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine, alongside routine immunisation for children under five, are crucial for immunity. Pakistan recorded 74 polio cases last year. The government has scheduled three major polio vaccination drives in the first half of 2025, with the next rounds planned for April and May. Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the last two countries where polio is endemic. Efforts to eliminate the virus have been hindered by vaccine misinformation and resistance from some religious hard-liners, who claim immunisation is a foreign conspiracy. Militant groups have also frequently attacked polio teams, posing a major challenge to eradication efforts.
