EastEnders star Frank Barrie dies aged 88 as tributes are paid
Former EastEnders star Frank Barrie has died aged 88. The actor, who rose to fame when he joined the Bristol Old Vic theatre company in 1965, passed away on June 30th. His agent – Scott Marshall Partners – confirmed the sad news in a statement today. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved client, Frank Barrie, at the age of 88,' they wrote. 'He died peacefully at home, with his wife Mary and daughter Julia.' Frank appeared in 23 episodes of the BBC soap between December 2010 and May 2011 as Edward Bishop, a friend of Dot Branning (June Brown). His character was the choirmaster at a Walford church which was attended by several Albert Square residents. He immediately struck up a friendship with Dot, and the two continued to cross paths over the following months. Things soon turned sour when he began to take her ailing husband Jim (John Barden) to the park and bookies, and feared it could worsen his health. She became humiliated when Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) branded Edward her 'fancy man', and decided to cut contact. Later, they reconciled, but Dot's worst fears were confirmed when he tried to make a move on her. The two then cut contact for good. On Instagram, EastEnders have paid tribute. 'We are deeply saddened to hear that Frank Barrie has passed away,' a statement reads. 'Our love and thoughts are with Frank's family and friends.' Early in his career, Frank received critical acclaim for his stage performances, and starred alongside Derek Jacobi and Joan Plowright after being invited by Sir Laurence Olivier to join the National Theatre. On screen he played two guest characters in former daytime serial drama Doctors, and a number of roles in BBC Two's Play of the Day/Month/Week. Doctor Who and Mind Your Language star Pik-Sen Lim dies aged 80
British actress Pik-Sen Lim, best known for her roles on shows including Doctor Who and Mind Your Language, has died aged 80. Born in British Malaya in 1944, Lim migrated to Britain when she was just 16 to pursue an acting career. Her first screen credit came a few years later when, in 1964, she played a nurse in the hospital drama Emergency Ward 10. It was on the set of this show that she also met scriptwriter Don Houghton, whom she married in 1968 and went on to have daughter Sara Houghton, also an actress, with. The actress also went on to appear in the first three seasons of the sitcom Mind Your Language. However, it's now been announced that the actress died earlier this month. Paying tribute to Lim, actor Daniel York Loh wrote on Instagram: 'An iconic figure in so many ways, I'd seen her on TV in Mind Your Language amongst other things when I was a kid… 'She was so affectionate, so witty, so brilliantly scabrous and absolutely honest about the rubbish this industry deals actors of our heritage – unlike a fair few others who actually try and cape it. 'We'll miss you so much but thank you, Pixi, for blessing our lives with your unique presence.' Meanwhile director Barnaby Edwards shared: 'My abiding memory of Pik-Sen 'Call me Pixie' Lim is of the utter delight she inspired in those of us lucky enough to work with her. 'She was acting alongside her daughter, Sara, and their relationship was a joy to behold: Sara was the responsible adult; Pixie, the naughty child. 'And nowhere was this mischief more in evidence than during the wildtrack session at the end of the day.' More Trending Other notable roles throughout Lim's career came in Albion Market, Night and Day, Arabian Nights, The Bill, Little Britain, This Way Up and Vampire Academy. She also played the killer cleaner in the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn, while her last screen credit came in an episode of the American science fiction drama The Nevers in 2023. Pik-Sen rose to fame as Chung Su-Lee in 1970s comedy Mind Your Language but was best known for her appearance in Doctor Who serial The Mind of Evil, The Mirror reports. KUALA LUMPUR: Penang-born actress Lim Pik-Sen, best known for her role as Chung Su-Lee in the popular British sitcom Mind Your Language, has passed away. She was 80. Pik-Sen rose to prominence in the late 1970s as the Chinese student character which became one of the most familiar faces on British television, and was well-known in both the UK and Malaysia. Pik-Sen, the daughter of businessman Lim Cheng Teik, died on Monday, as confirmed by tributes shared by friends and colleagues. Actor Daniel York, who collaborated with her on stage and in audio dramas, fondly remembered her on Facebook: "She was a joy – full of love, laughter, and mischief. Her gift for comedy made you feel safe on stage. That unique voice and bold energy carried us all." He added, "We've shared the same agent for over 25 years. She'll be deeply missed." Fans of Mind Your Language also paid their respects on a dedicated Facebook group boasting more than 675,000 members. "She was the greatest follower of Chairman Mao," joked actor Rafsan Tahmid, referencing one of Su-Lee's iconic lines from the show. The British Film Institute once described Pik-Sen as "the most recognisable Chinese actor on British television throughout the 1970s and 1980s." Before her sitcom fame, Pik-Sen had already made significant inroads on British television. In the 1960s, she played Nurse Kwei in Emergency Ward 10, one of Britain's earliest medical dramas. Her role as a fluent English-speaking Chinese nurse who falls in love with a doctor was considered pioneering at the time. Her other credits include an appearance in Doctor Who as Chin Lee in "The Mind of Evil" (1971), the military drama Spearhead, and popular shows like Coronation Street, Casualty, Holby City, and The Bill. On the big screen, she showcased her versatility in the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn, where she portrayed the formidable Killer Cleaner. In more recent years, Lim's distinctive voice graced the Dark Souls video game series as narrator. She also appeared in American TV productions such as Vampire Academy (2022) and The Nevers (2023).
