Ariana Grande, Kieran Culkin, Jimmy Kimmel among 534 invited to join Oscars academy

The Oscars' voting body is growing again with a glittering list of new recruits that includes pop superstar Ariana Grande, newly minted Oscar-winner Kieran Culkin and late-night veterans — and past Oscar hosts — Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien. On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it had invited 534 new members across its 19 branches. This year's class includes Oscar nominees, below-the-line craftspeople and rising international voices — among them 'Wicked' star Grande; 'Succession' actor Culkin, who won the supporting actor Oscar for 'A Real Pain'; and late-night hosts Kimmel, a four-time Oscar emcee, and O'Brien, who hosted the ceremony for the first time this year. In all, the group features 91 Oscar nominees and 26 winners, including Mikey Madison, who took the lead actress Oscar for the best picture winner 'Anora.' Madison's co-stars Yura Borisov and Karren Karagulian were also invited to the actors' branch. The latest invitations reflect the Academy's ongoing push for greater inclusion, even after meeting its post-#OscarsSoWhite diversity benchmarks. Of the 2025 class, 41% identify as women, 45% as members of underrepresented ethnic or racial communities and 55% are from outside the United States. Across the total membership, 35% identify as women, 22% as members of underrepresented groups and 21% are based internationally. After years of rapid expansion — peaking with a record-setting incoming class of 928 in 2018 — the Academy has shifted toward more sustainable growth. Still, this year's tally represents a modest increase over last year's 487 invitees. Other additions to the acting branch — the Academy's largest — include 'The Apprentice' co-stars Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan, who drew nominations for their portrayals of Roy Cohn and Donald Trump, respectively, in the controversial biopic, along with supporting actress nominee Monica Barbaro ('A Complete Unknown'), Aubrey Plaza, Jason Momoa, Jodie Comer, Dave Bautista and 'Emilia Pérez' star Adriana Paz. (Notably, 'Emilia Pérez' lead Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history this year as the first openly transgender performer nominated in the lead acting category, did not receive an invitation — a decision that follows backlash over past controversial remarks.) New recruits to the directors branch include this year's nominees Coralie Fargeat ('The Substance') and Brady Corbet ('The Brutalist'), as well as Gints Zilbalodis, who directed the Oscar-winning animated feature 'Flow.' Invitees in the documentary branch include the team behind this year's Oscar-winning 'No Other Land': Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor. 'We are thrilled to invite this esteemed class of artists, technologists and professionals to join the Academy,' Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said in a joint statement. 'Through their commitment to filmmaking and to the greater movie industry, these exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community.' If all invitations are accepted, the Academy's total membership will rise to 11,120, including 10,143 voting members.

Selena Gomez Looks Unrecognizable With a Dramatic Retro Hair Transformation

Selena Gomez shared a photo of her new hair transformation on Instagram. Her new look sees her ditching her sleek, minimalist hair for a messy retro shag with bangs. "I would, but I'd regret it, then get it redone so I simply wont #bangs," she captioned the Gomez's clean girl era is, apparently, a thing of the past. The actress and singer debuted a bold new look on Instagram this weekend—after months of wearing her hair in chic, sleek, not-a-hair-out-place styles, Gomez has switched things up with a retro shaggy lob with curly bangs. Paired with a bright orange lipstick and swipe of bold blush, it's kind of serving up '70s rocker chick. "I would, but I'd regret it, then get it redone so I simply wont #bangs," she captioned a photo of her new look. Well, it seems she simply did. And hopefully, she doesn't have any regrets. Her stylist, Orlando Pita, also shared a few snaps of Gomez's trim, writing, "Having a fun day playing with @selenagomez 💇🏻‍♀️." Her makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, shared a selfie with Gomez, writing, "New hair, who dis?" Gomez is no stranger to life with bangs. In 2020, she gave subtle curtain bangs a go. Then, in 2022, she debuted a bold curly bob with matching bangs. In 2024, she rocked a set of long Linda Ronstadt-coded '70s bangs. More recently, however, Gomez has preferred to keep her hair neat, tidy, and minimalist, aside from a brief curly blonde moment for her role in last year's Emilia Pérez. As Gomez told Cosmopolitan last year, she loves to change up her look. "It really depends on my mood or where I'm going," she said. While Gomez was getting her fresh haircut, her fiancé Benny Blanco was at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on June 21 where he accepted the award for Favorite Viral Song award for their joint track "Bluest Flame." 'Wish I could be with all the kiddos @kidschoiceawards,' she wrote across an Instagram story on the day. Read the original article on InStyle

People Are Begging Zoe Saldaña To 'Read The Room' After She Declared That Her 'Emilia Pérez' Oscar Is 'Trans' And 'Goes By They/Them'

It's been three months since Zoe Saldaña memorably took home the 2025 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Emilia Pérez. The divisive musical, directed by Jacques Audiard, follows a transgender Mexican cartel leader named Emilia Pérez (played by Karla Sofía Gascón) as she seeks help from a lawyer (played by Zoe) to obtain gender-affirming surgery. Emilia keeps her transition a secret from her wife and kids, posing as the aunt of her pre-transition self. The film sparked backlash for a number of reasons, though one of the biggest talking points has undoubtedly been its portrayal of the trans experience. The LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD branded the film a 'step backwards for trans representation,' arguing that it 'recycles the trans stereotypes, tropes, and clichés of the not-so-distant past.' Related: 12 Celebs Who Came Out At A Young Age, And 13 Who Came Out Way Later In Life Months after its release, the backlash against Emilia Pérez grew further when the cast notably made no mention of trans rights as they accepted their controversial Oscar wins — despite the fact that the entire plot of the film centres around a trans woman's experience, and given the current terrifying political climate for trans folks. And with this in mind, people are now once again disappointed that Zoe — who still hasn't spoken out at length about trans rights — stated that her Oscar statuette 'goes by they/them.' Zoe's comments quickly went viral on X, where several users begged her to 'read the room.' 'Nobodys got time for this right now Zoe,' read one viral post with over 3.8 million views. Twitter: @egeofanatolia / Jeff Kravitz / FilmMagic 'funny cause she completely omitted any mention of the trans community during her acceptance speech,' someone wrote. 'had the whole press tour and many award show platforms to say something, ANYTHING about the attacks on trans people and this is what she comes up with months after her big (undeserved) oscar win. boo tomato boo,' another user echoed. 'Trans people: we need help the government is trying to kill us, please stand up for us in a meaningful way. Zoe Saldaña: My trophy is an enby,' one user quipped, while someone on Reddit shared, 'She said this but said nothing about trans rights during her acceptance speech. Oof.' Yikes. Zoe Saldana fiercely slammed for branding her Emilia Perez Oscar statue 'trans'

If you thought you had finally escaped any discourse around 2024 film Emilia Pérez, you were mistaken. Zoe Saldana, who plays Rita Mora Castro - a Mexican lawyer tasked with helping a cartel boss transition into a woman, recently spoke with People about winning her first ever Academy Award for the role. In speaking about her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she mentioned that she keeps the statue in her office and that it was 'gender fluid.' She then went on to say that the award was 'trans' and goes by 'they/them.' But the admission did not go over well with the general public. Although Emilia Pérez won several awards, the movie - which features other actors including trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez - was met with massive controversy. On one hand, members of the LGBTQ community were upset at the movie's 'retrograde' portrayal of a trans woman. Others took issue with the representation of Mexican culture in the film, which featured an oversimplified take on drug violence in the nation, as well as a mixture of inaccurate accents and dialects. The cast of the film faced backlash for its portrayal of trans women on film as well as its inaccurate depiction of Mexico And then, some of Gascon's old tweets were resurfaced, which featured racist and discriminatory views against Muslims, China, and George Floyd - for which she later apologized. On top of all of this controversy laid critic's biggest issue: Not once during any award speech or discussion about the film did any of the actors involved mention the issues that plague trans people in their communities. So Saldaña saying months later that her Oscar award was 'trans,' caused a rehashing of the uproar the film faced when it first came out. 'We have Latinos/Hispanics fighting for their rights at this moment and this woman and the whole cast of Emilia Perez have been silent about their support to the community they profited from, clear as water they only cared for the award,' one X (formerly Twitter) user shared, referencing the ongoing protests taking place against ICE. Another user brought attention to how much the act felt like an afterthought. 'Yet she could barely speak about trans rights during her acceptance speeches,' they said. Others mirrored the same sentiment, with one user saying, 'She's so nasty where was this energy making the movie or during the awards campaign lol.' Some users clapped back at the choice to call her award trans. Social media users slammed Saldaña, pointing out the lack of her support for the trans community while accepting awards for the film 'She's calling her Oscar… trans????' one user questioned. And finally, some users were just upset to have to see anything about the film on their timelines again. 'I thought I wouldn't have to hear about this movie again,' another X user shared. While Emilia Pérez itself may be in the best, it's no telling what its cast might say in the future to bring it back into the headlines.
