EEG's Students Workshops aim to mould a generation of environmental stewards in UAE

AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI) The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), through its innovative and interactive programmes, is harnessing the transformative power of education to build a more sustainable future. According to EEG, its diverse environmental programmes reflect its commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, and leveraging it for global impact. A standout among these initiatives is the Students Workshops, launched in 2001 to cultivate a generation of environmental stewards in the UAE. Since its inception, the workshops have engaged 8,545 students and 1,719 teachers, equipping them with environmental awareness and practical skills to contribute meaningfully to the country's sustainability vision and the global Sustainable Development Goals. Now in its 25th cycle, the programme targets students from primary, intermediate, and secondary levels across both public and private schools in the UAE. This year's workshop, scheduled to run from October 20 to 22 under the theme, the Paradox of Choice: Protecting the Present, Cultivating the Future, 'invites students to critically examine the complex environmental dilemmas they face daily', EEG said. The programme is 'intentionally designed to empower students to reduce their ecological footprint by turning awareness into action'. 'It emphasises how individual and collective choices – though seemingly minor – can have profound consequences for both immediate wellbeing and long-term sustainability,' EEG said. The core objectives of the workshops include educating students about climate change and sustainable habits, primarily connecting choices to impact, promoting mindful consumption and sustainable habits, promoting systems thinking and long-term vision, equipping with tools and supporting the integration of environmental education across the curriculum. Unlike traditional classroom learning, EEG's workshops adopt an immersive, hands-on approach. Students participate in role-playing activities and group challenges, where they step into the shoes of policymakers, environmental activists, or business leaders to address real-world environmental issues. Older students engage in advocacy and presentation exercises, pitching sustainability campaigns to peers and practising real-world leadership. 'Students learn how everyday decisions – like what they eat, wear or throw away – directly affect natural resources, climate and biodiversity,' EEG explained. Another impactful feature of the programme is the inclusion of a comprehensive Teachers' Manual, developed and provided to all participating educators. This manual serves as a practical guide, enabling teachers to replicate workshop content within their own classrooms and schools. It ensures that the knowledge shared during the sessions extends beyond the event itself, creating a multiplier effect across the wider school community, EEG said. 'The long-term impact of EEG's Student Workshops is envisioned as a ripple effect – beginning with individual transformation and extending outward to families, schools, and entire communities.'

"Emirates Environmental Group" supports the Circular Economy through a leading dialogue on waste valorisation

Habiba Al Mar'ashi: 'Waste is a valuable resource that drives innovation and economic opportunities.' Dubai, UAE – The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) successfully organised its 3rd Panel Discussion of the year under the powerful theme: 'Your Waste, My Treasure: Advancing Circular Economy through Waste Valorisation.' The event that took place on 25th June 2025 was hosted by Dubai Chambers, it brought together a diverse group of experts, youth, and sustainability stakeholders to explore the transformative role of waste valorisation in achieving a circular economy in the UAE and the wider region. The event opened with EEG's renowned Inter-School Debate between member schools of the Emirates Environmental Group which was launched earlier in the year, where students enthusiastically debated the motion: 'Waste Valorisation: A Key to Achieving Circular Economy in the UAE and Beyond?' Representing the Proposition, The Millennium School, Dubai argued that, 'Waste valorisation enables resource efficiency, reduces landfill dependence and is central to closing the loop in a circular economy.' Speaking for the Opposition, JSS International School, Dubai countered, 'Waste valorisation alone is insufficient; without systemic change in consumption, design and infrastructure, circularity cannot be fully achieved and realised.' This engaging youth segment reflects EEG's strong commitment to environmental education and to nurturing the next generation of sustainability champions. While the expert panel discussion brought together a stellar lineup of natinal and regional sustainability thought leaders and innovators, including Mr. Tim Clarke, CEO of Warsan Waste Management Company; Ms. Ceylan Üren, Co-Founder & Chief Development Officer of The Waste Lab; Dr. Udayan Banerjee, Advisor to the CEO of Cleanco Waste Treatment LLC; Prof. Mohammednoor Al Tarawneh from UAE University; Ms. Muna Al Nahdi, Director of Sustainability & Consultancy at FARNEK; Eng. Ahmed Moosa Alkhajeh, Head of Waste Project Design and Implementation Section - Waste Strategy and Projects Department, Dubai Municipality; and Dr. Daker AlRabaya, CEO of Waste Processing & Recycling Business at BEEAH Group. The session delivered a breadth of ideas, with dynamic, back-and-forth exchanges that elevated the discussion beyond expectations. Speakers shared sector-specific updates, highlighted key challenges, and explored the potential for cross-sector collaboration—captivating the audience and sparking significant interest. They addressed not only the complex issues surrounding waste management but also constructively challenged and supported one another's viewpoints, contributing to a dialogue that was open, inclusive, and free from bias. A robust audience Q&A segment followed, with questions coming from attendees of all backgrounds, including engaged high school students. If not for time constraints, the discussion could have continued well beyond the allotted hour, as each speaker had more to contribute. The discussion witnessed attendance from private sector, government agencies, schools, media, VIPs and foreign dignitaries. 'The conversation during the panel discussion was a vital step towards mobilising actionable solutions to ensure that waste is no longer seen as a burden, but as a valuable resource that drives innovation, economic opportunity, and environmental resilience,' said Mrs. Habiba Al Mar'ashi, Co-Founder & Chairperson of EEG who moderated the session. She added: 'Bringing together voices from industry, government, academia and youth created a collaborative platform to accelerate the region's transition to a truly circular economy.' Throughout the session, participants explored the environmental, economic and social impacts of waste valorisation, the development of cutting-edge technologies such as the Warsan Waste-to-Energy facility, and Dubai's bold vision to achieve zero landfill by 2030. The dialogue underscored the UAE's role as a regional pioneer in embedding circular economy principles into national sustainability frameworks. Key themes that emerged during the discussion included the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating the shift from waste to resource; the growing relevance of innovative reuse, recycling and upcycling models; and the central role of policy, behavioural change and education in enabling circularity. Experts also stressed the need for robust metrics, system design, and investment in innovation ecosystems to scale up impact and achieve long-term sustainability goals. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal #9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal #13: Climate Action, and Goal #17: Partnerships for the Goals, this panel reaffirmed the urgent need for integrated, inclusive and forward-thinking approaches to address global environmental challenges and unlock a regenerative, circular future for the UAE and beyond. This impactful forum was made possible through the generous support of McDonald's UAE and Accenture, who served as the Main Sponsors—demonstrating their long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable innovation. Farnek contributed as the Support Contributor, reinforcing their leadership in environmental solutions. The event also benefited from the hospitality of Al Khoory Hotel, who provided catering services, and was enriched by the ongoing collaboration with EEG's Panel Discussions Partner, the Arabia CSR Network. Additional support came from prominent organisations including the Emirates Green Building Council, the Clean Energy Business Council, and the Swiss Business Council, showcasing a unified drive toward cross-sector environmental impact. EEG celebrates silver jubilee of youth empowerment

In a landmark moment marking 25 years of environmental advocacy and youth empowerment, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) proudly concluded the 25th Cycle of one of its most impactful educational programmes targeting the intermediate and secondary school students; known as the 'Inter-School Environmental Public Speaking Competition.' It is a flagship national initiative that continues to serve as a dynamic platform for nurturing the voices and visions of tomorrow's environmental leaders. Held from May 5-8, 2025 at the Taaleem Centre in Al Barsha, this milestone edition brought together 702 students from 117 schools across the UAE in a celebration of knowledge, innovation and civic responsibility. The event concluded on a celebratory note with an exciting awards ceremony. After a highly competitive and inspiring four days, Global Indian International School, Dubai, under the topic: Urbanisation vs. Wellbeing: The Role of Sustainable Cities in Public Health, emerged as the Champion of the 25th Cycle, succeeding the 2024 titleholder, Delhi Private School Dubai. EEG extends heartfelt congratulations to all the students, teachers and schools for their tireless efforts and meaningful contributions. The Silver Jubilee of this esteemed competition is a testament to EEG's unwavering dedication to integrating environmental education into the heart of academic and youth development. It stands as the longest-running and most impactful educational outreach programme in the UAE, designed to elevate environmental literacy while empowering students to become agents of change. Through the power of dialogue, public speaking, critical thinking and research, this programme offers students aged 13 to 18 the opportunity to engage in solution-oriented discussions on some of the world's most pressing environmental and sustainability issues. In her stirring opening address, Habiba Al Mar'ashi, the Co-Founder and Chairperson of EEG, reflected on the legacy of this initiative and the incredible journey it has taken over the last two and a half decades. 'What began as a modest initiative has evolved into a national movement that is empowering the youth with the tools, knowledge and confidence to confront environmental challenges of our time. The competition is about inspiring ownership, responsibility and vision amongst the youth. It is about shaping the leaders who will build the sustainable future we all aspire to,' she stated. She further added: 'This year's cycle was held under the spirit of the 'Year of Community,' declared by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE highlighting the importance of collective engagement and social cohesion. It is through platforms like these that we strengthen the social fabric of our nation and ignite a sense of purpose amongst the youth—motivating them to take action, not just in classrooms, but in their homes, communities and future careers.' The programme goes beyond its immediate educational value—it is a powerful contributor to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). This year's topics and themes were aligned with Goal #3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal #4: Quality Education, Goal #7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal #9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal #13: Climate Action, Goal #14: Life Below Water, Goal #15: Life on Land and Goal #17: Partnerships for the Goals. The integration of these global goals into the competition ensures that students are educated on environmental matters and are equipped with a systems-thinking approach that views sustainability as a holistic and interconnected priority. The true legacy of the Inter-School Environmental Public Speaking Competition lies in its transformational, long-term impact on students and the wider society. Over its 25-year journey, the competition has influenced thousands of young minds, fostering a deep-rooted sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship as well as ownership and leadership.
