Cyber scam worth crores busted in Yavatmal; jobless youth duped via bank accounts

Yavatmal: A massive cyber fraud running into crores has surfaced in Pandharkawda taluka of Yavatmal district, where hundreds of unemployed rural youth were duped into handing over their bank account credentials under the pretext of getting jobs through the govt's Employment Guarantee Scheme (MREGS). Victims from villages like Chopan, Vasantnagar, Shivni, Wagholi, and Jarang were asked to open bank accounts and submit ATM cards, passwords, UPI IDs, and net banking access. These accounts were then used to route large-scale financial transactions across India—including from Gujarat, Delhi, Mumbai, and Andaman—raising suspicions of a nationwide cybercrime racket. The fraud came to light after former Pandharkawda municipal president Santosh Borale filed a complaint with Yavatmal SP, demanding a CBI probe. Several affected youths have also filed police complaints, naming local agents Mayur Chavan and Manohar Rathod as masterminds. Transactions ranging from Rs10 lakh to Rs1.15 crore were carried out through these accounts, exposing the account holders—many from daily wage families—to legal action. With their accounts frozen and tax notices expected, these unsuspecting youth now face criminal charges for crimes they claim they never committed. "This appears to be a large network, not a local incident. It must be investigated at a national level," Borale said. Authorities have launched a preliminary probe, but no arrests have been made yet.

Unemployed youth move Bombay High Court over delayed induction despite appointment letter

In a glaring instance of bureaucratic apathy, a young man from Sindhudurg district has moved the Bombay High Court after being left jobless for over eight months despite holding a valid appointment letter issued by a government-appointed agency. Sumedh Shivaji Jadhav, a postgraduate in English literature from Sawantwadi, was selected in October 2024 as an Assistant Programme Officer under the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) in Maharashtra. The recruitment was conducted by S2 Infotech International Limited, a private contractor appointed by the State government to manage staffing for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). According to the writ petition filed by Jadhav, he received his appointment letter on October 10, 2024. The very next day, S2 Infotech formally informed the Deputy Collector of the EGS branch in Sindhudurg of Jadhav's selection. However, despite repeated follow-ups and visits to the EGS office in Sindhudurg as well as Mantralaya in Mumbai, Jadhav was never officially inducted into the role. 'I kept visiting the offices, but they offered no clear response,' said Jadhav in his petition, adding that he remains unemployed even as vacancies for the position persist. Frustrated by the silence, Jadhav filed a Right to Information (RTI) request earlier this year, only to receive confirmation that the Assistant Programme Officer post at the Sawantwadi EGS office has been vacant since April 1, 2025. The petition raises key constitutional questions under Article 226 and seeks court direction to the State and S2 Infotech to induct him into the position for which he has been selected. It argues that despite following due procedure and clearing the recruitment process, Jadhav has been deprived of a livelihood due to inaction by the authorities. The petition said that there is a growing trend where contractual recruitment through private agencies results in ambiguity, delays, and lack of accountability. The petition also includes communications between S2 Infotech and the EGS department, the appointment letter, and the RTI reply, substantiating his claim. Jadhav has urged the court to intervene to prevent further injustice not just to him, but to ensure transparency and fairness in government-contracted recruitment processes. The Bombay High Court is expected to take the matter for a hearing in the coming weeks.

ASR dist sets target of 100% organic farming by 2028

Paderu (ASR District): Alluri Sitarama Raju district collector AS Dinesh Kumar has announced an ambitious plan to achieve 100% organic farming across the district by the year 2028. He urged farmers to make effective use of the agricultural machinery provided by the government to achieve significant progress in the agriculture sector. Addressing a meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday with farmers who received farm machinery at 50% subsidy during the 2024–25 financial year, the collector emphasised the need for planning at the village secretariat level. He directed officials to conduct a survey to assess the actual requirement of farm equipment across various regions. The collector also interacted with farmers to understand the extent of organic farming being practiced and the use of chemical inputs such as urea, potash, and pesticides. Stressing the importance of awareness, he encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly organic farming methods. He said that steps have already been taken to promote coffee cultivation across 30,000 acres this year. Additionally, under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, saplings of Maddi, Neredu, and Jackfruit will be distributed to farmers. He encouraged land-owning farmers to expand coffee cultivation in the district. District Agriculture Officer SBS Nand stated that a total of Rs 1.26 crore worth of agricultural machinery has been distributed to 351 farmers at a 50% subsidy. This includes Taiwan sprayers for 95 farmers, tractors for 29, power tillers for 59, brush cutters for 13, and power weeders for 155 farmers.
