Tom Sturridge anchors dream-like closing chapter

Season 2 of The Sandman, adapted from Neil Gaiman's eponymous comic book (1989–1996), serves as the concluding chapter of the fantasy saga. While showrunner Allan Heinberg has stated that the decision to end the series after two seasons was driven by plot constraints (there are not enough stories featuring Dream for a third season), Netflix's announcement to conclude the show followed multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Gaiman in January 2025. It is difficult to divorce the artist from their work, especially so in The Sandman, with which Gaiman is closely involved, having written the comic books, as well as developing and executive producing the show. It is an individual choice and if you do decide to give the uber talented cast and crew of The Sandman a chance, you might not be disappointed. The Sandman Season 2 (English) Director: Jamie Childs Cast: Tom Sturridge, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Kirby, Ferdinand Kingsley, Mark Hamill, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Deborah Oyelade Episodes: 6 Runtime: 45-65 minutes Storyline: Dream sets out in search of a banished love, a lost sibling and his son Season 2 opens with Destiny (Adrian Lester) summoning his siblings, the Endless, for a family conclave. The Endless, personifications of human existence, are Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), their twin, Despair (Donna Preston), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles). Another Endless sibling, Destruction (Barry Sloane), has gone missing after abandoning his realm. Destiny says the Fates have made a prophecy that will unfold soon after the meeting. Desire needles Dream about Nada (Deborah Oyelade), an African queen who Dream condemned to 10,000 years in hell for rejecting him. Dream regrets his treatment of Nada and goes to Hell to set her free — much to the consternation of Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), his librarian. When he reaches Hell, he finds that Lucifer, (Gwendoline Christie) fed up with sinners blaming them for their wickedness, has shut hell down and sent out the demons and sundry hosts of hell. Seeking revenge, Lucifer leaves Dream with the key to Hell, prompting beings from every realm to stake their claim, including Lord Azazel (Roger Allam), a duke of Hell; the Norse gods Odin, Thor, and Loki; a child of chaos; and King Auberon and Queen Titania of the Faerie. When Delirium, who was once Delight, asks Dream to help her find Destruction, he sets off on a road trip where he finds more than a brother. Spanning time and space from the French revolution, with Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) in the thick of things, to Orpheus' wedding in ancient Greece and Shakespearean England with a staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream for the king and queen of Faerie, The Sandman is a dizzying trip through unfettered imagination. The production design, from the costumes to the sets, echoes the fever dreams. There are slender hands holding up a bridge, the horror of the French Revolution with its mounds of guillotined heads, the sun-dappled vistas of ancient Greece, the different versions of hell, taking one a spellbound trip of enchantment. The CGI work is top-notch too, bringing Barnabas, Destruction's talking dog, Pumpkinhead (Mark Hamill), the chain-smoking janitor in the dreamworld, and Matthew (Patton Oswalt), Dream's raven emissary, to vivid life. Sturridge anchors the stunning ensemble cast. His Dream is both distant and deeply human as he navigates his duties as ruler, lover, brother, and father. We feel each of his conflicts as deeply as he does including the tears that burn a path down his cheeks. The five episodes of Season 2 dropping on July 24 and the special on July 31, brings our wanderings in the Dreaming to an end. The Sandman is currently streaming on Netflix

The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 ending explained: Dream makes a heartbreaking choice; here's when the next part will drop

The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 ending explained: Netflix's The Sandman has returned with a second season, or at least half of it. Volume 1 of Season 2 dropped on July 3, 2025, with six episodes that dive deep into Dream's past, complex family dynamics, and a heartbreaking reunion with his long-lost son, Orpheus. The first season of The Sandman premiered back in August 2022, introducing audiences to the brooding ruler of the Dreaming and the powerful family of Endless beings that he's part of. Season 2 brings back Tom Sturridge as Dream (also known as Morpheus), joined by Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, and new cast additions including Barry Sloane as Destruction, Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus, and Melissanthi Mahut as Calliope. The show is developed by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg, with Heinberg also returning as showrunner. With themes of grief, love, and consequence at the helm, The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 ends with one of the most painful decisions Dream has ever made. Here's what happens and what it means going forward. The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 ending explained Episode 5 reveals the full weight of the fractured bond between Dream and his son, Orpheus. Once a gifted musician and oracle, Orpheus was reduced to a severed head centuries ago after he defied his father's warnings and joined a cult to try and reunite with his deceased wife Eurydice. When the plan failed and he was dismembered, Orpheus begged Dream to end his life. Dream refused and left his son in the care of priests on a remote island, vowing never to see him again. But desperate times call for painful reunions. Dream needs Orpheus' help to find his missing brother, Destruction, who abandoned his duties 300 years earlier. In exchange, Orpheus demands the one thing Dream once refused him: death. Dream finally grants his son peace In Episode 6, after a deeply sombre conversation, Dream agrees to fulfil his son's request. The moment is heavy with regret and understanding. This is no act of violence. It is a father giving his son the dignity he has long yearned for. Ruairi O'Connor, who plays Orpheus, said it best: Orpheus has lived in torment for centuries, but the idea of finally dying still brings fear. And for Dream, the emotional cost is enormous. After carrying guilt and shame for thousands of years, he makes a decision that will change everything. Destruction's whereabouts and reasons revealed Meanwhile, Destruction is found living in peace on a nearby island, right next to Orpheus' temple. Dream realises that his brother hid in the one place he would never think to look — somewhere that forced him to confront his greatest pain. Destruction has no plans to return to his role as one of the Endless. He believes in walking away from power when it no longer serves good. Before leaving again, he shares a crucial piece of advice with Dream: sometimes the only good reason to do something is love. It's a clear message about Dream's choice regarding Orpheus and perhaps a hint at Dream's own evolving understanding of his duties and emotions. The cost of spilling family blood By the end of Episode 6, Dream returns to the Dreaming, shattered by what he has done. For the first time in the series, he cries. It's a rare glimpse of vulnerability from a character who often hides behind duty and formality. But this act of mercy carries a heavy price. Dream has broken a sacred rule — the Endless are forbidden to spill family blood, no matter the reason. Even though Orpheus asked for it, the act does not go unnoticed. The Kindly Ones, also known as the Furies, have awakened. Vengeance is coming. What's next in The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 ? The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 arrives on July 24, 2025, and is expected to deal with the consequences of Dream's choice. With the Furies now in play and the balance of the Endless possibly disrupted, the second half of the season promises high stakes, internal reckoning, and more of the poetic storytelling the series is known for. For now, Volume 1 ends not with a loud battle or a flashy cliffhanger but with a gut-wrenching act of love that may cost Dream everything.

I was worried about 'The Sandman' season 2 — but the first episode proved me wrong

"The Sandman" is officially back for its second and final season on Netflix. I won't lie, that last part had me worried. The first season of the DC Comics adaptation was lovingly — and expensively — crafted by Warner Bros. Television and Netflix. So my first reaction when I heard that season 2 would be the show's last was "Oh my god, they're going to cheap out on this." I'm happy to report that this isn't the case. At least, not through the show's first episode. The CGI-heavy show still doesn't look cheap at all. It also still tells incredibly compelling stories. Just the first episode alone is setting up multiple storylines that I can't wait to explore over the next 10 episodes. So if you were hesitant to start "The Sandman" season 2, don't be. This final season seems set to avoid becoming a nightmare. If you've never seen "The Sandman" or have never read any of the DC Comics stories, here's a brief synopsis. The series revolves around Morpheus, also known as Dream (Tom Sturridge). Dream is one of the Endless, a group of seven that personification of life's core components. As you can tell from his name, he's the embodiment of dreams and rules a fantastical world known as the Dreaming, which exists in the time and space we explore while we sleep. The first season kicks off with his capture in an occult ritual in 1918 and his subsequent escape years later in 2025. He's then thrown into multiple storylines where he's forced to save the real world to keep his realm of the Dreaming intact. Season 2 picks up with Dream ready to restore the Dreaming to its full glory after the events of season 1. But before he can begin, he's called to visit his brothers and sisters — the Endless. While with them at Destiny's home, he is goaded into journeying to Hell to free Nada, ruler of the First People and Dream's former lover, whom he has imprisoned in Hell for 10,000 years. As he readies to make the journey, though, his emissary to Hell returns with starting news: Lucifer is eagerly waiting Dream's arrival. When the devil is excited for you to come to Hell, that's typically bad news. This plotline is adapted from "Season of Mists," the fourth volume of the DC Comics run of "The Sandman," so as someone who I already know what story is being set up here — and that's a good thing, because "Season of Mists" is probably my favorite "Sandman" story. I won't spoil what's coming. All I'll say is fans of the show "Lucifer" will find it an easy story to connect with. But "Season of Mists" isn't the only great "The Sandman" storyline that's being set up here. A lot of time is being spent on the one member of the Endless who is absent from Destiny's meeting. That member of the Endless isn't mentioned by name, so I won't reveal it here either. But they play a key part in the seventh volume of "The Sandman" comics, "Brief Lives." Spoiler alert, but that's also the name of the fourth episode of season 2, so we can essentially confirm the show will explore that storyline further. Another volume name that has been turned into an episode title is the "Kindly Ones," which is the penultimate volume of the comics run. It's the title of the third-to-last episode of season 2, volume 2 (which drops on Netflix on July 24), so we know that storyline will be addressed as well. That means this season of television is covering three volumes from the comics at a minimum. But there's evidence in the official cast for this season that the show will also address "A Game of You," which is volume five of "The Sandman" comics run, right after "Season of Mists." Given that it looks like we'll go straight into adapting "Brief Lives" after adapting "Season of Mists," it's unclear where an "A Game of You" adaptation would fit in. Even if it isn't part of the show's final season, though, I am concerned that the show is simply not going to have enough time to satisfactorily address these four storylines. The good news is that, after watching the first episode of season 2, my only remaining concern is that the show has too many good stories to tell in not enough episodes. The cast remains exceptional, the stories are compelling and the CGI looks of the highest quality. There are certainly worse problems to have. Stream "The Sandman" season 2 volume 1 on Netflix Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:
