Govt. committed to restoring glory of anganwadi centres in Andhra Pradesh, says Minister Sandhya Rani

Minister for Women and Child Welfare, and Tribal Welfare Gummadi Sandhya Rani has launched the distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktop stoves to 11,400 out of 55,607 anganwadi centres in the first phase, and inaugurated a sapling planting drive on the occasion of World Environment Day here on Thursday. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Sandhya Rani said the State government was committed to restoring the past glory of the anganwadi centres, and stressed the need to spread awareness about the importance of making the State plastic-free. She said the induction stoves would not cause any pollution and were safe for children. She assured that the government would do justice to the anganwadi teachers in paying them salaries that they deserved, and in giving other benefits such as gratuity, while criticising the previous government for completely neglecting them. The government would provide funds for augmenting the infrastructure in the anganwadi centres and upgrading the mini-anganwadi centres to main centers. Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath commended the services being rendered by the anganwadi teachers, and said out of the 1,457 anganwadi centres in NTR district, 553 had permanent buildings, and proposals were submitted for the construction of compound walls for 226 anganwadi centres and for maintenance of 60 centres. Energy Efficiency Services Limited CEO Vishal Kapoor said Andhra Pradesh was ranked first in the country in the implementation of energy efficiency programme and that using energy-efficient technologies would not only help the environment but also reduce electricity bills. Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohan and Principal Secretary A. Surya Kumari were present.

GHMC panel against renewing agreement with EESL for LED streetlights' maintenance

A special GHMC standing committee meeting convened by Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi unanimously decided to go for fresh tenders for the maintenance of streetlights, which has been a chronic issue in the city for several years, since the LED lamps were installed. Two options were placed before the standing committee by the Electrical wing of the GHMC, one to revive the agreement with certain modifications with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for streetlight maintenance, and the second to select a new agency for comprehensive operation and maintenance of streetlighting. Additional Commissioner Venugopal Reddy explained the maintenance gaps of EESL and the modifications proposed in the agreement, along with the stipulations of the new tenders, which are said to plug all the loopholes, and ensure phase-wise replacement of all bulbs, installation of new lamps and CCMS boxes, and maintenance of the infrastructure. With the committee unanimously voting for the second option, Ms. Vijayalakshmi instructed the zonal commissioners to ensure purchases and maintenance of streetlights till the new agency takes over. The agreement with EESL for installation and maintenance of LED streetlights has come to an end this month, after seven years of turbulent journey full of complaints about non-functioning streetlights.

How ceiling fans could aid in mitigating climate change?

Ceiling fans are a staple in almost every Indian home, but most of them are shockingly inefficient. In this episode of The Climate Economy, host Kunal Shankar uncovers how replacing conventional fans with energy-efficient BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) models could save up to 15% on individual electricity bills and slash India's national power demand by nearly 5%. To understand the issue better, we speak with Vishal Kapoor, CEO of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), about the massive untapped potential of fan replacement, the behavioural and market barriers holding consumers back, and how smarter policies, subsidies, and innovations like IoT-enabled fans could change the game. GHMC replacing non-functional street lights across Hyderabad

After years of citizens' complaints about non functioning streetlights, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has finally got down to work to fix the problem. The GHMC, through a press note, urged the citizens to lodge any complaint related to non-functional streetlight through the My GHMC app for quick resolution. The streetlights fitted with LED lamps were earlier under the maintenance of Energy Efficiency Services Limited whose term as per the agreement ended on May 1, the note said. As of now, the maintenance lies with GHMC, which is going ahead with fixing new lamps, additional commissioner Venugopal Reddy informed. Orders have been issued for zone-wise purchase of new lamps and other spare parts. The 17 agencies hired for mechanical works will be continued for two more months. A total 9,000 complaints have been filed so far about streetlights, of which 5,800 have been addressed. The remaining too will be addressed within a week, and thereafter, efforts will be made to resolve each complaint within 48 hours, the note said.
