Federal govt allocates RM8.79b to roll out 86 projects under 12MP in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The federal government, through the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, has allocated RM8.79 billion until June 2025 to implement 86 development projects in Sabah. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the energy transition and water transformation minister, said the total allocation will be disbursed under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). "Sabah has received a fairly large allocation from the federal government, it is our commitment to resolve two key issues in Sabah, namely, water and energy. "Because without energy and water, there can be no economic growth in Sabah," he said when speaking at the ministry Engagement Session with Sabah Media in 2025 here tonight. He said the Madani government is always striving to ensure that Sabah continues to prosper together as a big Malaysian family. Therefore, Sabah's progress is not only the responsibility of this state, but of the entire nation. "With strong federal-state relations, we can build a more prosperous, just as well as sustainable state and country, with the support of a free and trustworthy media and a united people," he said. Meanwhile, Fadillah also said the engagement session was intended as a platform for the media to better understand the role of ministry and agencies under its auspices. "We organised this session to foster closer ties and strengthen the relationship between the media and ministry's top management," he added. – Bernama

Fadillah to chair MA63 committee meeting in Sabah tomorrow

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof is scheduled to chair the technical committee meeting on the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63) tomorrow. He said the meeting would be the first item on the agenda in the state capital this morning. "Tomorrow, I will personally chair a special technical committee under MA63 for the state of Sabah. "I believe the meeting will be attended by (deputy chief minister) Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan, Finance Minister (Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun), and fellow representatives from Sabah," he said during his Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry's media night here. Following the meeting, the Petra Jaya member of parliament is expected to make several visits under a programme dubbed Petra Squad. "This programme, which started during my tenure as the public works minister, adopts the same concept as our previous ground outreach initiatives, where all top ministry leadership go to the ground to oversee project implementations and programmes under the ministry in Sabah. "We will listen to feedback from Sabah's leadership directly on-site to discuss any problems or improvements needed. "We expect to visit many areas, and I hope the media will play an important role alongside us," he said, adding that Universiti Malaysia Sabah would be one of the sites. Earlier in the evening, upon his arrival, Fadillah paid a courtesy call on Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman.

Govt maintains credit scheme for over 96,000 rooftop solar users

PUTRAJAYA: The government will continue to allow over 96,000 existing rooftop solar users under the Malaysian Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) and Net Energy Metering (NEM) schemes to earn electricity bill credits for the excess solar power they generate and export to the grid. In a statement on Tuesday (July 1), the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) said the continuation of the solar credit scheme aligns with the implementation of a new electricity tariff structure, effective today, that ensures fairness and transparency. Under the updated framework, these credits will differ slightly based on which programme users are enrolled in, and for how long their systems have been active. At present, there are over 82,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a combined capacity of 1.7 gigawatts (GW) in operation, with another 14,000 systems (595 megawatts) under development. The ministry noted that MBIPV users will receive credits for energy, network and capacity use for five more years, until Dec 31, 2030, while NEM 1.0 users will continue earning credits based on the displaced cost (the cost the utility avoids when solar energy replaces electricity from the grid) for ten years, until Dec 31, 2035. Meanwhile, NEM 2.0 and 3.0 users will receive similar credits for ten years from the date their solar system was installed. It added that incentive rates and calculations will be adjusted as needed to ensure the system remains fair for all electricity users and to provide equitable incentives to eligible MBIPV and NEM users, including energy efficiency rebates or other related benefits. To standardise how credits are applied across all rooftop solar programmes, the 'settlement period' or the time frame for calculating and applying these credits, will now be fixed at 12 months, replacing the previously varied timeframes. For users whose original credit period has ended, Petra said they have the option to switch to other ongoing solar initiatives, such as the Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo) programme or the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM). They may also install energy storage systems or join any new solar schemes the government introduces, it said. With the conclusion of the NEM programme on June 30, rooftop solar installations will now continue under the improved SelCo programme, which allows for larger system sizes and more flexible installation setups, following earlier announcements by the government.- Bernama

New electricity tariff reflects major reform in national energy sector, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of the new electricity tariff schedule starting July 1 is a clear reflection of the major reforms being undertaken by the government, particularly in the national energy sector, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister, who is also the Madani government spokesperson, said the initiative aligned with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aimed to increase the use of renewable energy (RE) and reduce carbon emissions by 2050. "Under the new tariff schedule, 85 per cent of domestic consumers or account holders are expected to enjoy the same, or even lower, electricity rates starting July 1, 2025, provided their monthly usage does not exceed 1,000 kilowatt hours,' he said. "This is one of the key reforms being advanced in a coordinated manner by the government, together with the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, the Energy Commission (ST) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. It demonstrates that efforts to implement renewal or reform can still deliver tangible benefits to the people,' he said. Fahmi said this to reporters at the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya's Kita Madani Carnival at IWK Eco Park, Pantai Dalam, here on Sunday (June 22). Also present was Information Department director-general Julina Johan. On Friday (June 20), the ST announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia would benefit from fairer and more progressive electricity rates due to the newly approved electricity tariff schedule approved by the government. ST, in a statement, said that this tariff determination will take effect from July 1, 2025, to Dec 31, 2027, under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework, in line with the provisions of Section 26, Electricity Supply Act 1990. It said that the electricity tariff changes for the Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) involve the restructuring of the following three components, namely the average base tariff rate; the new tariff schedule; and the fuel cost adjustment mechanism. The Average Base Tariff Rate for the RP4 period has been set at 45.40 sen/kWh, slightly lower than the 45.62 sen/kWh approved in December 2024 - reflecting an overall reduction of up to 19 per cent in the average electricity tariff compared with RP3. Earlier, Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, officiated the Kita Madani Carnival, which aims to bring the community closer to government services through a casual, informative programme that highlights current issues, policies, and initiatives in line with the Malaysia Madani concept. The programme, among other things, featured Rahmah Madani Sale and Agro Madani sale, sports competitions for children, as well as exhibitions involving 21 government agencies, including counters for traffic summons payments and driving licence renewals.- Bernama
