Jo Ghani: National Climate Change Bill to include incentives for carbon reduction
KUALA LANGAT: The proposed National Climate Change Bill will include incentives for companies that successfully reduce their carbon emissions, said Acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the bill may also include provisions for the implementation of carbon credits, which would further support the national agenda to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. He added that the bill is still in the drafting stage and has yet to be presented to the cabinet. Johari said he is currently reviewing the draft and plans to engage with industry players, including Bursa Malaysia, to gather input and guidelines. He added that the details would be disclosed to the public once the bill is finalised. "The first draft is already out, but I need to review it thoroughly to ensure that the proposed law to be tabled is acceptable to the industry and can achieve its intended objectives," he said. He said this when speaking to reporters after launching the B30 Biodiesel pilot project at Guthrie's Golden Hope Academy in Pulau Carey today. On May 29, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry secretary-general, Datuk Dr Ching Thoo, was reported as saying that the bill is expected to be tabled in August.

Johari Ghani to assume duties of natural resources minister after Nik Nazmi's exit, says chief secretary to govt
PUTRAJAYA, July 11 — Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani will assume the duties and functions of the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, effective immediately. Chief Secretary to the Government and Cabinet Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, in a statement today, said the matter was agreed upon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and conveyed during the Cabinet meeting on July 9. On May 28, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced his resignation as Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, effective July 4. Nik Nazmi, 43, said he had done his best to implement key reforms since assuming the role of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister in December 2022, and later the restructured ministry. Among the notable achievements during his tenure were amendments to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and enhanced transparency in the reporting of Environmental Impact Assessments. City of Tallahassee aims for All-America City hall of fame with third victory
The city of Tallahassee is on the cusp of becoming a hall of famer as it hopes to win its third All-America City award, becoming one of ten cities to claim the prize in Colorado over the June 27-29 weekend. A delegation from the city of Tallahassee is in Denver to take part in the All-America City Competition and Event as one of 20 finalists. This is the third time the city has been named a finalist, having gone on to win in 1999 and 2015. The award is a recognition from the National Civic League and each year focuses on a different theme allowing cities to highlight the work they've been accomplishing in that specific area. The 2025 theme was "Strengthening Environmental Sustainability through Inclusive Community Engagement." "I have lived in Tallahassee for 50 years, I've seen the city grow and thrive, and I'm just so glad to be a part of that ... What this competition allows is for us to demonstrate to the residents of Tallahassee and Leon County, the state of Florida, and indeed the country, all of the good things that we have happening," City Commissioner Curtis Richardson said. This is Richardson's second time serving as a delegate for the city, having been a part of the group in 2015. On the TalGov website, the city has dedicated space to the award nomination, such as some background of what the city submitted that officials believe reflects this year's award theme. In their submission, city staff highlighted the community-driven initiatives in the Southside Action Plan, the expansion of the parks system to 100 parks and the Clean Energy Plan that the city commission voted on in 2019. Richardson said the city stands out among others due to its commitment to African-American communities, as in the Southside Action Plan and ongoing projects such as the Southside Transit Center: "I can't imagine there are many, if any, other cities that have placed that kind of attention on long neglected African-American (and) minority neighborhoods." Richardson provided some insight into what the competition weekend will look like, saying that each city will give a presentation highlighting the work they've done to a panel of judges. On top of competing, the weekend serves as a conference where delegates can mingle, hear from other cities and possibly bring back new ideas. Alongside Richardson, local radio host Greg Tish is joining the group in Denver and serving as a delegate for the first time. He's looking forward to "just getting to interact with people that don't necessarily run in my circles but (who) have a love for the city." Tish said it isn't just adults heading out to the mile-high city. One middle school group is tagging along for the ride. The School of Arts and Sciences is a local middle school with a growing rock band led by Shannon Watkins. As part of showcasing Tallahassee's excellence, the young rock stars will get to take their talents to the national level. The award winners will be announced Sunday, June 29. Richardson said he's sure that, if it wins, the city will do it up in style: "When we bring home the prize for the third time, we will plan something huge to celebrate." Nik Nazmi stands firm in stepping down as minister on July 4 despite Anwar's plea
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Adamant on leaving the ministry, despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressing hopes he would stay on, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed his decision to step down as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), effective July 4. In a Facebook post yesterday, Nik Nazmi admitted it was not an easy decision to leave the ministry he had led for two years. 'After two years, the team at NRES, including its departments and agencies, has become a dream team with exceptional commitment, ability, and integrity. However, this decision is part of a bigger consideration. The party's mandate is important for broader reforms. 'I did have the option to stay, but my choice is to step down,' he said. Nik Nazmi also shared that Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) chairman Shareen Shariza Abdul Ghani visited him last week while he was packing up his office at the ministry. 'She asked if there was any chance of convincing me to change my mind. I simply smiled and looked around the office. Shareen followed my gaze to the empty shelves that once held books, and the bare walls that used to display pictures, paintings, and jerseys. She understood my decision. 'I told her to take good care of MGTC,' he added. Nik Nazmi said he had visited MGTC several months ago to address concerns raised by staff about the agency's direction. 'In discussions with Shareen, Amin Ramli, and NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo, we agreed on the importance of tackling these issues honestly and openly. 'May MGTC continue to lead the climate change agenda towards our Net Zero 2050 target,' he said. Nik Nazmi also likened his feelings to football manager Jurgen Klopp's resignation from Liverpool, saying, 'Although he loved everything about the club, it was still a decision he needed to make. That is exactly how I feel.' On May 28, Nik Nazmi, who also serves as NRES minister, announced that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Anwar, effective July 4. His announcement followed Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's resignation, effective June 17.
