Spud lovers urged to ditch boiling for faster method that seals in flavour
Potatoes have been a beloved staple in Irish kitchens for generations, appearing in everything from hearty stews to fresh salads. While boiling has long been the go-to method for cooking spuds, experts are now urging fans to switch to a quicker, more flavourful way: steaming. According to cooking experts at Epicurious and Epi Test Kitchen, steaming potatoes not only cuts cooking time in half but also locks in more of their natural flavour. Unlike boiling, which requires waiting for a whole pot of water to come to a boil, steaming only needs a small amount of water, making it faster and more efficient. Boiling potatoes can take anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes depending on their size, but steaming speeds up the process while preserving essential nutrients and vitamins. Plus, it means less cleanup - no more battling piles of pots and pans in the sink. Steaming potatoes is simple and requires minimal prep. Peel them thinly and chop into similarly sized chunks to ensure even cooking. Place the pieces in a steaming basket over boiling water, cover and let the steam work its magic. In about 10 minutes, your potatoes will be tender, flavourful and ready to enjoy. Serve steamed spuds as a tasty side dish with meat, fish or vegetarian meals, or toss them into salads for a fresh twist. Season them with salt, pepper, olive oil or fresh herbs like chives to suit your taste. For anyone short on time but unwilling to compromise on taste, steaming is an easy, healthy way to elevate your potato dishes - no special skills needed, just a steamer basket and a little patience. Brits told to stop boiling potatoes and use quicker method that locks in flavour
Cooking is a learning process, and experts now urge people to stop boiling potatoes, and instead try this simple method that will cut the overall cooking time by half. Potatoes are so versatile, and a comfort food to many of us. A lot of delicious dishes can be created from them. But one thing is for sure: it takes forever to cook. As reported by Epicurious and Epi Test Kitchen, there's one quicker method of cooking that also locks in all the flavour and takes half the time. Instead of boiling them, have you ever thought about steaming them? The site said: 'Steaming has all the benefits of boiling - no cooking oils, not much clean up - at a fraction of the time. Why? You're only waiting for a small amount of water to boil, not a whole pot.' Boiling is the usual cooking method for some foods, including potatoes. However, it can indeed take a lot of time until they're ready to eat, and not everyone has the time or patience. According to All Recipes, small potatoes can take about 10 to 15 minutes to boil, while larger potatoes can take between 20 and 25 minutes. Even better, the clean-up is minimal, leaving less mess compared to other methods. Thanks to this method, forget about the accumulation of pots and pans in the sink. How to steam potatoes Steaming potatoes is a healthy and delicious way to cook them, whilst also preserving their natural taste. It takes less time than boiling them, while also retaining their many nutrients and vitamins. These potatoes can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes, such as salads or on their own, sprinkled with some garnish. Steamed potatoes are the perfect side with any meat, fish, or vegetarian alternative. To do this, peel the potatoes as thinly as possible and cut them into even-sized chunks - not too big, but not too small. Otherwise, it will take longer to cook fully. Then, fill up a pot with boiling water and a steaming basket inside. Put the potatoes in the steamer basket and let the water steam them until they're tender. After 10 minutes or so, transfer them to a separate plate to cool down, and add any other seasonings: salt, pepper, oil, or chives. Last but not least, enjoy, whether by itself or accompanied by other food! By following this simple advice, those with a busy schedule and little time to cook will be able to enjoy some delicious steamed potatoes in no time. It doesn't require a lot of culinary knowledge, but just some time and patience.
