Politicians condemn those behind van covered in racist graffiti in west Belfast

The van was daubed with racist graffiti in the Bearnagh Drive area. A company logo on the side suggests the van belongs to Equans, a long-time contractor for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. SDLP West Belfast councillor Paul Doherty described the attack as 'disgraceful'. 'The racist graffiti daubed on a Housing Executive vehicle in Bearnagh Drive today was disgraceful and has no place in our society,' he said. "This vile act does not reflect the people of this community. A community built on respect, diversity and solidarity. No family should have to walk past that kind of hatred.' Mr Doherty said he reported the incident to the PSNI. 'I've flagged this with the police and hope the vehicle can be removed by Housing Executive staff as soon as possible. Those responsible should be ashamed. We stand united against racism in all its forms.' Sinn Féin's Paul Maskey also condemned the graffiti. The West Belfast MP said: 'Overnight in Andersontown, a company van was sprayed with disgusting xenophobic slurs, designed to spread fear and hatred. 'Our activists were in the area today speaking to local residents and the vehicle owner, all of whom are outraged. 'We have reported this to PSNI and I would urge anyone with information to please bring it forward. Watch: Thousands flock to Scarva for annual Royal Black Preceptory parades 'Those involved do not speak for the vast majority of west Belfast. Andersonstown is a welcoming community — one which I am proud to be part of and represent. 'Our resolve is steadfast. Racism will not win.' The PSNI have been contacted for comment. Equans says on its website that it has been 'providing repairs, maintenance, heating and refurbishment services to more than 45,000 homes across the region' for more than two decades. 'The Northern Ireland team has also recently been awarded funding by the NI Sustainable Energy Programme to provide full heating and housing solutions to low income households, helping them become safe, comfortable, and energy efficient,' the website adds.

Affordable Oxford homes planned for former SEND site

The building of affordable homes at the site of a former school for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is expected to begin this City Council's housing company, OX Place, has partnered with private firm Equans to build 51 "sustainable" council and shared ownership homes off Sandy Lane West in Littlemore, includes 27 flats let at social rent for people on the housing register, and 24 flats for shared development is planned for the site of the Northfield Hostel that closed in 2014 and was demolished last year. The local authority said social rent levels would see "tenants typically pay around 40% of the rent a private landlord would charge for the same home". The council said it was also "exploring planning permission for a further 10 homes on the hostel's adjacent sports field", which has been boarded up since the school closed. It said they would be built once the 51 flats were Nigel Chapman, cabinet member for citizen focused services and council companies, said it was "good" the site was being exploited for a development "where the majority of homes will be much needed social housing" after a decade of being "underused". How Passengers Are Using On-Train Wi-Fi in 2025: Insights Revealed for World Wi-Fi Day

Icomera Rail passengers increasingly expect onboard Wi-Fi to mirror the always-on, content-rich experience of their home broadband. New figures from connectivity specialist Icomera - published today on World Wi-Fi Day - indicate that Google, Instagram and Facebook are absorbing the biggest share of on-train Wi-Fi bandwidth. Key Findings 1. Google 2. Instagram 3. Facebook 4. Netflix 5. Spotify 6. YouTube 7. WhatsApp 8. TikTok 9. Amazon Prime Video 10. Apple iTunes From Email to Entertainment 'When on-train Wi-Fi was first offered in the early 2000s, it primarily attracted business passengers with the promise of improving their productivity by allowing them to send work emails while they travelled' says Paul Barnes, Chief Marketing Officer at Icomera, a subsidiary of Equans, a global leader in the energy and services sector. 'Today we see a typical user consume 100 megabytes during a Wi-Fi session, which would be enough for those early 2000s business passengers to send potentially 1,000+ emails over the course of their journey – but most of that data is now being used for streaming video, music and social media. All passenger groups want the home broadband experience on the move'. This raises the question of how rail operators can keep pace with the constantly evolving digital landscape. Starlink Enters the Mix Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks are emerging as a viable solution for meeting increasing passenger expectations and evolving rail operator requirements. Icomera signed an authorised reseller agreement with SpaceX's Starlink in December 2024 and is trialling the service with operators on both sides of the Atlantic. 'We've seen impressive early results when adding satellite into the mix alongside the 4G and 5G cellular networks that trains are already connecting to' Barnes says. 'Even in remote rural areas the performance is comparable to an inner-city 5G connection. This will benefit both train passengers and operational systems such as live video surveillance or remote diagnostics.' 'With data-hungry passengers and operational systems now sharing the same digital path, reliable high-capacity connectivity is fast becoming as essential to rail travel as the tracks themselves.' ---ENDS--- Notes to Editors Methodology: Icomera's analysis covers the period from 28th May 2024 to 27th May 2025, drawing on the anonymised Wi-Fi traffic of 2.2 million daily users categorised by service types from thousands of trains in Europe and North America. Rankings are based on total data volume per service type. Passengers' personal information was not collected. World Wi-Fi Day is a platform to recognise and celebrate the significant role Wi-Fi is playing in cities and communities around the world and understand how Wi-Fi is helping to reduce digital poverty through innovative projects that will 'connect the unconnected'. Bouygues (BOUYF) confirmed its group outlook for 2025, with group sales and COPA both up year-on-year. The construction backlog reached a record level of EUR34.2 billion, up 12% year-on-year, providing good visibility on future activities. Net debt improved by EUR645 million year-on-year, despite significant acquisitions, indicating strong financial management. Bouygues Telecom achieved a 6% growth in sales billed to customers year-on-year, driven by strong performance in the Fixed segment. Equans showed significant improvement with a COPA margin increase of 0.9 points to 3.8%, reflecting successful execution of strategic plans. The net result attributable to the group was negatively impacted by an exceptional income tax surcharge, leading to a net loss of EUR156 million. Bouygues Telecom's EBITDA after leases decreased due to higher energy costs and increased IFER tax on mobile sites. The macroeconomic environment remains uncertain, affecting the pace of growth in certain segments like giga factories and data centers. Bouygues Immobilier's backlog remains low, reflecting a challenging market environment. The Fixed ABPU growth rate is expected to slow down in 2025 compared to previous years. Q: Can you provide insights into the current telecom market, particularly regarding pricing pressures in mobile and fixed segments? A: Christian Lecoq, Bouygues Telecom SA - CFO: The mobile market is less dynamic with slight growth and sustained competition in the low-end segment. We initiated an upward trend in tariffs, but not all competitors followed. In the high-end, our new marketing strategy has reduced churn and improved customer satisfaction. In fixed, we are gaining market share, especially in rural areas, due to our strong network quality. Q: How is the synergy extraction and margin improvement progressing at Equans? A: Pascal Grange, Bouygues SA - Deputy CEO and CFO: We are implementing a strategic plan focusing on pricing, purchasing, and productivity improvements. This has led to gradual margin improvements, with a target to reach a 5% margin by 2027. We are optimistic about achieving slightly higher margins than previously guided for 2025. Q: Are there any impacts from tariffs on Equans or construction businesses? A: Pascal Grange, Bouygues SA - Deputy CEO and CFO: There is no significant impact from tariffs as our operations are largely localized. The main concern is the global economic environment, which remains uncertain. Q: Could you elaborate on the slowdown in certain market segments for Equans in Q1? A: Pascal Grange, Bouygues SA - Deputy CEO and CFO: The slowdown is due to a wait-and-see approach in segments like giga factories for batteries and data centers, where technological advancements and policy changes are causing delays in decision-making. Q: What is the outlook for Bouygues Telecom's fixed ABPU growth? A: Christian Lecoq, Bouygues Telecom SA - CFO: Fixed ABPU growth will continue in 2025 but at a slower pace than previous years. This is due to the end of DSL and WiFi 5 commercialization and the introduction of new technologies at higher prices, along with the impact of our B&YOU offers. France's Bouygues posts Q1 core earnings above expectations

May 14 (Reuters) - French construction-to-telecoms group Bouygues ( opens new tab posted better-than-expected first-quarter core earnings on Wednesday, driven by strong performances of its energy arm Equans, road-building division Colas, and construction and telecom units. The company acquired Equans from French power group Engie ( opens new tab in late 2022, in a bid to grow in the energy transition and services. Bouygues reported quarterly current operating profit from activities (COPA) of 69 million euros ($77.21 million), substantially above a company-compiled consensus of 35 million euros. Quarterly sales of 12.59 billion euros came in line with consensus and included the first full-quarter contribution from La Poste Telecom.
