Germany U21s looking forward to 'ice baths and pizza' after grueling quarterfinal win over Italy

Germany U21s looking forward to 'ice baths and pizza' after grueling quarterfinal win over Italy The Germany U21s are through to the 2025 UEFA European Championship semi-finals after winning an absolutely insane game at the MOL Arena in Dunajska Streda on Sunday night. The Germans battled back from a 0-1 deficit against the Italian U21s to take a 2-1 lead deep into second half injury time. Antonio Di Salvo's DFB Juniors appeared destined to book their semi-final ticket easily, particularly after the Italians were reduced to ten and then nine men by two sending offs in the the final ten minutes of normal time. Shorthanded Italy nevertheless forced extra time with a set-piece equalizer at 90+6. Advertisement Despite having a double man advantage, the Germans weren't able to score a winner during either extra time interval. The match appeared destined for penalties until Freiburg's Merlin Röhl finally netted the 3-2 in the 117th. Eventually, the U21s did their head coach proud by defeating his heritage country. Speaking to German broadcaster Sat1 after the full-time whistle finally brought some relief, DFB squad captain Eric Martel did his utmost to present his usual calm front. Martel narrowly escaped being the man who cost his team their tournament dream. It was the Köln man who committed the foul that enabled Italy to equalize from the dead ball situation. Martel's midfield teammate Rocco Reitz was also-visibly exhausted after 120 minutes of action, particularly after making several long sprints towards the end. Di Salvo and Röhl also registered their thoughts. Advertisement 'It doesn't matter what happens to us, we can shake it all off,' Martel told Sat1. 'I'm dead tired while also being exuberantly happy.' Reitz described himself as 'at the end of his rope' after a 'crazy game'. Di Salvo spoke of 'hectic play [preceding the 2-2]' that forced the team to 'make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.' Röhl admitted the team 'didn't do well [enough] two men up'. When it came time to discuss rejuvenation, Reitz made the famous German Per Mertesacker 'callback' referencing the German central defender's famous interview after Germany's grueling extra time victory over Algeria in the 2014 World Cup Round-of-16. German female footballing legend Alexandra Popp also referenced the famous 'Notorious BFG: Are you not entertained?' moment when speaking after a German quarterfinal extra time victory in the Olympics tournament last sumer. Advertisement Reitz's recipe called for Mertesacker's 'ice baths', with some extra references to the evening's opponent and the U21 head coach's cultural roots. 'Ice baths and pizza will help us get fit for [the French U21s in the semi-finals] on Wednesday,' the Borussia Mönchengladbach man promised. GGFN | Peter Weis

Where I'd Find Value in Canadian Stocks for My Long-Term Holdings

Written by Puja Tayal at The Motley Fool Canada Spending time in the market can generate wealth if invested in the right stocks. But how to find stocks that can thrive in the long term? Investing in stocks is investing in a business, and businesses have ups and downs. If you put yourself in the business owner's shoes and see the economic, political, regulatory, and industrial environment and the management's approach, you can get a fair idea of which business will be the wealth generator. A business is as good as its management. If they are distorted from reality, then it is a stock to steer clear of. However, management that accepts the headwinds, cuts outlook if needed, and makes difficult choices to sustain in crisis could provide value in the long term. One such example is Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B). Its management made some difficult choices of downsizing from several businesses of passenger planes and trains to just business jets. Four years of focused efforts in business jets and aftermarket services pulled the company from a turnaround stock to a growth stock, and if things go as planned, even a dividend stock in the future. Before the first-quarter earnings, Bombardier CEO Eric Martel expressed concerns about tariff wars affecting jet deliveries and refused to give guidance until there was clarity. Once the United States imposed tariffs on Canada in March and Bombardier's products were exempted from tariffs, the company gave strong guidance. In its 2025 guidance, Bombardier's focus is on improving profitability. It expects revenue to grow by 6.7% and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) by 14%. It also expects its free cash flow to more than double to US$500 million in the lower range of its guidance. Particulars 2024 Results (US$) 2025 Guidance (US$) Aircraft deliveries (in units) 146 >150 Revenues $8.67 billion >$9.25 billion Adjusted EBITDA $1.36 billion >$1.55 billion Free cash flow $232 million $500 million – $800 million The business jet maker looks to derive value from its business jets by modifying them for defence and selling pre-owned aircraft. It has already monetized the maintenance and aftermarket service of its business jets in the air and will look for targeted acquisitions to expand this business. The management's strong execution of its plans makes it a value stock even at a $100 share price if you hold it for the long term. The last five-year turnaround drove the stock price up 700%. The next five years could give strong double-digit growth and even marginal dividends. Descartes Systems (TSX::DSG) share price fell by 13% after the company released its first-quarter earnings. While the company reported strong double-digit revenue and adjusted EBITDA growth of 12% year over year, it gave a word of caution by announcing cost-reduction initiatives. Why would a company with a 45% adjusted EBITDA margin and a net cash position of $176.4 million (equivalent to its quarterly revenue) reduce costs? Descartes earns 67% of its revenue from the United States. Many of its customers are facing economic and global trade uncertainty, hinting at a slowdown or decline in revenue in the coming months as tariffs reduce trade activity. The company is slashing its workforce by 7% and expects operating cash flow to reduce in the second quarter as it undertakes restructuring. Descartes is taking these steps to preserve its profit margins. However, it is well positioned to tap the recovery in trade activity once the tariff war eases. Even if the tariffs bring structural changes in the supply chain, Descartes's solutions can help companies adapt to the change. The June dip has made Descartes a value stock to buy, and its secular growth has made it a stock to hold for the long term. Cologne make a return to Bundesliga, ‘village club' Elversberg into play-off

dpa Berlin Traditional German club Cologne have returned to the Bundesliga and clinched the second division title, while small town club SV Elversberg will face the relegation/promotion play-offs. Cologne defeated Kaiserslautern 4-0 to clinch promotion and leapfrog SV Hamburg in the standings to also take the title in the final matchday of the second division. Hamburg had already secured promotion last weekend and will return to the Bundesliga after seven years in second tier. Cologne, meanwhile, only spent one season in the second division following their relegation in 2023-24. Jubilant fans stormed the pitch after goals from Eric Martel, Luca Waldschmidt, Florian Kainz and Mark Uth secured the victory. Elversberg defeated Schalke 2-1 and have the chance to complete a meteoric rise through the German football leagues with Bundesliga promotion, just three years after playing in the fourth division. It is the latest success story for the club from the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg, population of around 13,000 and no train station, in the south-western Saarland state. In the play-offs, they will face Heidenheim, who finished the Bundesliga in 16th. The first leg is on Thursday and the second leg on May 26. Elversberg would be the first club in the Bundesliga from the Saarland in 32 years since Saarbrücken were relegated in 1993. It was just their second season in the second division after spending only one in the third tier into which they were promoted from the fourth division Regionalliga in 2022. Schalke, one of the biggest clubs in Germany, will spend another year in the second tier after their relegation in 2022-23. Jahn Regensburg and SSV Ulm were relegated to the third tier, while Eintracht Braunschweig will face Saarbrücken in the promotion/relegation play-offs.
