Cardinals' Oli Marmol breaks silence on Erick Fedde decision
The St. Louis Cardinals, after dropping a must-win game to the last-place Colorado Rockies, decided to designate starting pitcher Erick Fedde for assignment. John Denton of shared Cardinals manager Oli Marmol's reaction to the team's decision to designate Fedde for assignment. Marmol praised Fedde and was also candid about why the team cut ties with the 32-year-old veteran. "He understood it," Marmol said of Fedde. "He was a pro about it. He understood that we gave him several chances to try and correct and get on the other side of it. Unfortunately, it wasn't translating into games. He was working hard at it, but he also understood where we are as an organization, and that it opens up a spot for one of the young guys that's going to contribute moving forward." Marmol's overall message about Fedde's release is an accepting one. While it's difficult to cut ties with anyone, Fedde was understanding, and Marmol was able to articulate why the move had to come to pass. Fedde's DFA'ing comes on the heels of one of his worst starts of the season. He lasted just three innings against the Rockies, allowing six earned runs and notching his seventh straight loss. This season, Fedde had a 5.22 ERA and a 3-10 record before being designated for assignment. Earlier in the year, against the Washington Nationals, Fedde had a complete game shutout. MORE: MLB insider reveals three relievers Cardinals are most likely to trade But, even at that point, despite being just eight starts into the year, Fedde's ERA was sitting at 3.86. After 5.1 scoreless in the next game, Fedde took a major step back in his next 11 starts. He had a 7.11 ERA from May 20th until the July 22nd start against the Rockies, which was the final straw. But, most of the damage came in his final five starts in a Cardinals uniform. In his final five-start, Fedde had a 13.25 ERA, allowing eight home runs, 33 hits, 26 runs, walking 11, and striking out only eight. His struggles were too much, and as Marmol mentioned, Fedde had plenty of chances to turn the corner. But, he couldn't, which led to him being designated for assignment in the final year of a two-year, $15 million deal. Fedde now will hit the open market, and while he wasn't the best, he could find a new home. Cardinals designate starting pitcher Erick Fedde for assignment
DENVER — The St. Louis Cardinals have designated right-handed starting pitcher Erick Fedde for assignment, the team announced Wednesday morning. Fedde, 32, had struggled mightily over his last several starts. In his nine starts since June 1, he logged just 39 1/2 innings and posted a 7.32 ERA, allowing 32 earned runs, 51 hits and 21 walks. Despite those struggles, the Cardinals kept Fedde in the starting rotation, hoping he would be able to turn his performance around and boost potential trade value. Advertisement But the organization reached its reckoning point after Fedde's start on Tuesday, where he allowed six earned runs over three innings against the Colorado Rockies. 'The truth is I've been awful,' Fedde said after Tuesday's game, an 8-4 loss. 'I'm putting the team in terrible spots, giving up runs early, putting our batters in tough spots. Confidence? For sure, all-time low. But I've had lows, I've had highs in this game, and I'm just trying to be professional, show up every day and give it my best. The team deserves better.' With the Cardinals (52-50) clinging onto their season, and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak expected to make trade deadline decisions in the near future, the club could not justify having Fedde, who was acquired in a deadline deal with the White Sox last July, take another start. '(Fedde) understood it,' Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said Wednesday, before St. Louis' series finale against the Rockies. 'He understood that we gave him several starts to try to correct and get on the other side of it. Unfortunately, it wasn't translating into games. He was working hard at it, but he also understands where we are as an organization, and that this opens up a spot for one of the young guys to contribute going forward.' Right-hander Michael McGreevy will slot into the rotation after spending the first half of the season shuffling between Triple A and the majors. He remained with the team after making a spot start against the Rockies on Monday, scattering two runs over seven innings in the Cardinals' 6-2 victory. The expectation is that McGreevy, the club's first-round pick in 2021, will spend the rest of the season in the Cardinals rotation. McGreevy holds a 3.49 ERA in the majors this season over five appearances (four starts). Reliever Andre Granillo was recalled from Triple-A Memphis as the corresponding move for Fedde. Cardinals counting on pitching against woeful Rockies
July 22 - If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to stay in the postseason race, they will the starting rotation to deliver. Michael McGreevy gave them a strong start Monday night in a 6-2 win against the Colorado Rockies, and it will be Erick Fedde's turn to do the same Tuesday in the second of a three-game series in Denver. Fedde (3-9, 4.83 ERA) takes the mound against Colorado's Bradley Blalock (0-2, 9.97) in a clash of right-handers. Fedde was strong at the beginning of the season, tossing at least six innings in five of his first eight starts, which included a complete game shutout at Washington on May 9. He hasn't won a game since then, and he has finished six innings only once in the 11-game span. In that time his ERA has increased by a just shy of a run per game since the game against the Nationals, leaving Fedde to search for answers. "My sinker is not running, which is really killing me," Fedde said after a recent start. "My cutter is moving, in my opinion, a little too much. I need to clean up the mechanics to hopefully get back to those shapes that I like. "I'm throwing a lot of balls. When I am throwing strikes, they're being hit well. It's a difficult situation to navigate. Maybe in a sense, I'm thinking too much about outside things, about my mechanics, about tipping, about holding runners. I'm just not focusing on making a quality pitch right then and there. That's something that's inexcusable and I have to be better about." Tuesday will mark his seventh career appearance (sixth start) against the Rockies, and he is 2-2 with a 5.00 ERA. He has pitched well in Denver, going 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in four outings (three starts). Blalock, who has not faced St. Louis in his young career, is pitching at home for the first time since Colorado's most lopsided loss of the season. The Rockies were routed 21-0 by San Diego on May 10, a day before the Rockies fired manager Bud Black. He allowed 12 runs on 13 hits in just 3 2/3 innings and was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque the next day. The Rockies called him up two weeks ago to make his fourth start and sixth appearance of the season. Blalock had a better experience at Cincinnati on July 12 when he allowed just one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Whenever St. Louis comes to Denver, it evokes memories of Nolan Arenado anchoring third base and crushing home runs for the Rockies. He was the star on Colorado consecutive playoff teams in 2017-18, but it has been downhill for the franchise since. The Rockies are in the midst of their seventh straight losing season and on pace to lose 100 games for the third consecutive year. With just 24 wins in their first 100 games, Colorado also is on pace to win just 38 games. If that holds true, they'd replace the 2024 Chicago White Sox as the team with the most losses in MLB's modern era. This White Sox finished 41-121. Only Kyle Freeland, German Marquez, Antonio Senzatela and Ryan McMahon remain from that 91-win team in 2018. DJ LeMahieu, a Gold Glove winner at second and the 2016 National League batting champion, wasn't re-signed. Arenado was traded to the Cardinals in February 2021 and shortstop Trevor Story left via free agency and signed with the Boston Red Sox. "It was very good," Freeland said of that team. "You look at that core of veterans who moved on and what they have done in the game, and you do wonder, 'What could have been?'" --Field Level Media
