Transplant surgeon sent child porn images from WI children's hospital, feds say
Years of messages about sex acts with kids and child pornography images were traced back to a transplant surgeon at a Wisconsin hospital, federal officials said. The IP address of the Kik messaging account under investigation since 2023 was located at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, prosecutors said in a July 15 criminal complaint. Now, one of the hospital's transplant surgeons, 46-year-old Calvin Eriksen, is charged with distributing and possessing child pornography, the complaint said. The doctor is accused of sending child pornography through the Kik messaging app between January and April, the complaint said. 'The allegations in the criminal complaint are deeply disturbing. This doctor has been placed on leave, and his ability to see patients has been suspended while the investigation proceeds. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement,' a spokesperson for the hospital said in a statement. McClatchy News reached out to Eriksen's attorney but did not immediately receive a response. According to online profiles and federal agents, Eriksen worked at a children's hospital and performed transplants on people of all ages, including infants and kids, court documents said. In 2023, an undercover agent pretending to be a 29-year-old woman with an 8-year-old daughter in West Palm Beach, Florida, came into contact with Eriksen through Kik, federal officials said. Eriksen sent messages to the undercover agent in August 2023 asking to perform sex acts with her and her daughter, according to the criminal complaint. Days after the initial message, Eriksen, who was using a fake name, told the undercover agent that he had a 22-year-old daughter who he wanted to molest, but couldn't because his wife was a stay-at-home parent, prosecutors said. The man also discussed traveling to Florida to engage in sex acts with the woman and her child, according to the complaint. Communications between the undercover agent and Eriksen abruptly stopped in December 2023. In July 2024, the undercover agent came across the Kik user in another group, and he began to send her messages about sex acts with children again, according to federal officials. He sent the undercover agent photos showing him in medical scrubs, according to investigators. Eriksen also sent the agent nude images and asked that the images be shown to the child, prosecutors said. The messages stopped that same month because Eriksen's account was banned from Kik, the complaint said. Eriksen was arrested on July 15 but was released and ordered not to have contact with any children under the age of 18, according to court records. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 31.

Egypt, Norway hold informal talks ahead of global plastic treaty negotiations
Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, held a virtual meeting with Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, as part of ongoing informal consultations in preparation for the next round of negotiations on a legally binding global treaty to end plastic pollution. The meeting brought together senior officials from Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment, including Tamer Mostafa, Director of the Department of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development; Soha Taher, Head of the Central Department for International Cooperation; and Yousra Abdelaziz, Head of the Plastic Unit at the Ministry of Environment. Minister Fouad underscored the value of informal dialogue in fostering mutual understanding and trust within multilateral environmental frameworks. She noted that Egypt has played an active role in various international environmental initiatives and brings a balanced perspective shaped by its status as a developing country and a member of the African continent. 'As a developing nation, Egypt recognises the developmental challenges facing many countries,' Fouad said. She emphasised that Egypt has taken a holistic approach to the treaty negotiations, assembling a broad-based delegation comprising representatives from the ministries of environment, foreign affairs, petroleum, and industry, in addition to private sector stakeholders. This, she said, ensures the country advocates for a just and inclusive transition. Fouad highlighted Egypt's proactive steps to reduce plastic pollution, including the implementation of extended producer responsibility (EPR) and measures to limit the use of single-use plastic bags. She stressed that the upcoming treaty must prioritise the goal of ending plastic pollution while providing adequate transitional periods and implementation support tailored to national contexts. Minister Eriksen welcomed Egypt's constructive participation in the treaty process and echoed the importance of informal talks in advance of formal negotiations, which are scheduled to take place in Geneva next month. 'These consultations are essential for clarifying national priorities and achieving consensus on treaty language, especially given the diverse global perspectives on plastic pollution,' Eriksen said. He emphasised the need for flexibility in the negotiating process to ensure meaningful progress and agreement. 'It's not just about setting up a financial mechanism – it's about defining what we are funding,' he added, pointing to the importance of capacity-building, innovative financing solutions, and active engagement from the private sector to enable successful implementation of treaty obligations.

Preview: Grandstand 2025 show aims to replicate the country Opry, with a little adrenaline thrown in
According to producer Mark Eriksen, this year's Grandstand Show could be called the Grand New Opry. Article content 'It will have all the glamour and high-energy of the Grand Ole Opry, but it will be Calgary style. It will bring elevated country flare to the Stampede's legendary stage, and it's packed with awe-inspiring performances and jaw-dropping stunts,' says Eriksen, who has produced the Grandstand Show for the past five years. Article content Article content This is one of the reasons Eriksen wanted country star Carolyn Dawn Johnson to headline Grandstand 2025. Article content Article content 'Carolyn has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, she's Albertan, and she's earned 17 Canadian Country Music Awards. There is no one better to headline our version of the Grand Ole Opry.' Article content Though Johnson has performed at Nashville North, this is her first time with the Grandstand Show. Her dreams of performing at the Stampede go back to when she was a teenager. Article content 'Back in 1988, a friend of mine and I created a mock duo of the Judds for the Stampede talent contest. We didn't win, but it showed that I always wanted to perform at the Stampede. I've lived in Nashville for quite a while, so it is always a thrill to come back to Alberta, and the Stampede is such a big deal. I've heard about it all my life,' says Johnson. Article content Her catalogue of songs stretches some 25 years, and she has plenty of new material, but she says her fans are coming to hear her vintage hits, so that's what she is going to give them in her set early in the show. That means she will be performing songs like Complicated, Die of a Broken Heart and Georgia. Article content Article content 'I want to do songs that people can sing along to, I want them to sing along to. I don't want them to just sit there and listen. I want them to be on their feet if that's how they want to join in.' Article content Johnson will also join the Young Canadians for These Boots Are Made for Walking, which will be accompanied by one of this year's drone extravaganzas. Article content 'It really is an adrenaline rush to start our show with. Audiences love these daredevils, and this year they are even going to jump a quad. Their number is called Thunder Struck. The audience is going to be sweating in the first few minutes of the show,' promises Eriksen. Article content Following the motorcycle act is Wild Wild West, the first number of The Young Canadians in their 57th year with the Grandstand Show.

The Value of Video Game IP in Post-‘Minecraft' Hollywood
With 'A Minecraft Movie' in striking distance of the billion-dollar mark at the global box office, there's no better time to check in on the state of the video game industry, with an emphasis on its intersection with Hollywood. Kaare Eriksen, author of a recent Variety Intelligence Platform special report on these subjects, tackles everything on the latest episode of Variety's 'Strictly Business' podcast — from the shadow that Trump-era tariffs could cast over Nintendo's Switch 2 console launch next month to the shift of 'Grand Theft Auto 6' to 2026. More from Variety 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' Claims Top Spot at U.K. and Ireland Box Office as Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' Looms Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' Rockets to No. 1 at Korea Box Office Jeffrey P. Jones on Why the Peabody Awards Are America's Archive of TV Excellence Rockstar Games, publisher of the hugely popular franchise, announced earlier this month that 'GTA 6' is now set to release on May 26, 2026. Many publishers behind big games expected this year were reportedly reluctant to commit to release dates until they knew for sure 'GTA 6' is locked down to one. Listen to the podcast here: 'The immediate upside is the sheer reality that now some publishers can breathe a bit easy and schedule games for the fall,' said Eriksen. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.'s 'A Minecraft Movie,' starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has done well enough to become the second-best gaming adaptation ever at the box office, which will certainly whet appetites among film execs to capitalize on other gaming properties. 'If there's going to be any kind of ramifications of a 'Minecraft' movie doing so well, it is going to be studios obviously salivating for the chance to take some IP, whether it's 'Grand Theft Auto,' 'Call of Duty,' or even Fortnite and Roblox, and try to figure out a way to do movies around those if it means they could potentially bring out that big of an audience,' said Eriksen. Christian Eriksen hints at next transfer with Premier League admission
Christian Eriksen insists there is "interest all around" ahead of his departure from Manchester United as a free agent at the end of June, but he hasn't decided where he will move yet Christian Eriksen says he is hoping to leave England and the Premier League behind this summer. Eriksen will leave Manchester United as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30 and is yet to decide where to move. The 33-year-old midfielder contributed eight goals and 19 assists in 107 matches for United across all competitions since joining on a free transfer in July 2022. But he struggled to win over Ruben Amorim in the 2024/25 season, starting just 11 Premier League games as they finished a lowly 15th, and was not offered a new contract. After being excused from the post-season trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong in order to marry his partner Sabrina Kvist Jensen, Eriksen is now preparing for international duty. He will be involved in their friendlies against Northern Ireland and Lithuania over the next week, before deciding on his future at club level. While there is nothing concrete yet, Eriksen is keen to leave England after spending 10 seasons in the Premier League with United, Brentford and Tottenham. The Danish midfielder has also played for Inter Milan and Ajax and wants to find a new experience. 'I would rather get away from the Premier League,' he told Danish TV. 'I feel like I've taken my turn in the Premier League, so I'm looking outside the English borders. It has been a great place for me and my family, and we have been there for many years. "When I moved from Tottenham to Inter, it wasn't my plan to go back to England either. After that I've been there for three and a half years again, so you should never say never. But my priority is that I have to leave." Eriksen has been linked with a move to Danish side Odense, where he spent time as a youngster. But he says, while there is plenty of interest, nothing has been decided. HAVE YOUR SAY! Where will Christian Eriksen end up this summer? Comment below. 'It's football's rumour mill. I hope no-one has put money on it being now, because then they will lose,' he said. "Right now there is nothing. There is interest all around, but there is nothing where I am close to signing.' He added: "My focus is on playing international matches, and then go on a good summer holiday. Then we will see how long the holiday will be." Eriksen is leaving United as a free agent alongside Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final game of the season, a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in which he scored a penalty, he said: 'It has been a tough season, but I am going to wish them all the best. It is an incredible stadium, an incredible club and I have no doubt I will be back at some point.'
