Historic Melaka fort bastion discovery to be preserved by PERZIM
MELAKA: The Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM) has pledged to preserve a recently discovered historic structure believed to be part of the old Melaka Fort bastion. The site falls within the UNESCO World Heritage zone, prompting immediate conservation efforts. PERZIM general manager Erne Hamsah assured the public that the area, located near Muzium Istana Melaka in Bandar Hilir, will be protected. The discovery was made during the construction of a car park, previously designated as Taman Larangan (Forbidden Park). 'Conservation work has already started with the appointment of conservators and archaeologists to carry out studies at the excavation site, while the parking lot construction, supervised by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), is being reorganised following the discovery of the historic structure,' she said. The uncovered structure is identified as part of the original Melaka Fort, crucial to the city's historical defence system. Authorities are assessing how best to display the monument to visitors while ensuring its structural integrity. 'We will indeed preserve (the site) because among the structures identified is the old bastion that is important in the history of Melaka's defence,' Erne added. Environmental factors such as erosion and physical damage are also being considered. The car park project will proceed with adjustments, halting only in areas where archaeological structures are found. 'Construction work on the parking lot will continue, but only certain alignments will be stopped for now,' she clarified. PERZIM is preparing detailed plans for the state government's review. Brian McLoughlin steps off bench to send lacklustre Kildare in Tailteann semi-final
Tailteann Cup semi-final: Kildare 1-13 (1-2-9) Fermanagh 0-9 (0-0-9) A fine display of shooting from Brian McLoughlin illuminated a Tailteann Cup semi-final that otherwise gave the viewing public flashbacks of the old sport of Gaelic football, the one that we all thought had been left behind. For a Kildare side that hadn't won in Croke Park since the 2022 Leinster Championship, recording just three wins in 23 games here since 2014, the underwhelming manner of the victory will be less memorable than the sense of relief at safely negotiating a hurdle that began to look increasingly hazardous as the contest progressed. There was no stage in the game when Fermanagh looked like the better side, but as the misses racked up, a group that have been pigeonholed as talented but unreliable was leaving a plucky underdog in the game. In the first half, it was missed goal chances that were the story. Kevin Feely slipped a pass to Colm Dalton, whose shot was blocked on the line by Ronan McCaffrey, then Feely himself crashed a thunderbolt of a shot off the woodwork, a few minutes before Daniel Flynn clipped a shot over the bar from 20 metres out when it looked like he might be in a position to advance on goal. With the heavens opening and handling increasingly difficult, it's not like Fermanagh were scoring freely either. Conor Love (two), Darragh McGurn and Ryan Lyons all took advantage of the drier ground to leave the game deadlocked at 0-4 each and warming up nicely with 15 minutes played, but as heavy rain drenched the players, the scores dried up. Alex Beirne and Joe McDade got the best of the scores to leave it 0-7 to 0-6 in Kildare's favour at half-time, and a poor game got even more sloppy after half-time, with just another point apiece registered in the next 15 minutes. For Fermanagh, a lack of possession was the issue, while Kildare had plenty of opportunities, but weren't long about adding ten second half wides to the four they shot in the opening 35 minutes. Enter McLoughlin to give an injection of attacking quality to a game where it was sorely lacking otherwise. The eventual man of the match got off the mark with a powerful strike at the end of a slow build up that saw Fermanagh lose their concentration and leave him wide open, then on the next attack he opted to rifle the ball over the bar rather than go for goal after being put through by a slick give and go with David Hyland. McLoughlin's decision to just put something on the board made sense when he followed up with a majestic two-pointer, and now Fermanagh needed a lifeline. Jonathan Cassidy picking up a breaking ball and driving through to set up Josh Largo Ellis was that lifeline, but instead of keeping the ball down along the slick surface, he fired his shot a foot over the crossbar, and that was as good as it got for the Erne men. Kildare continued to control the ball from then on, with McLoughlin adding one more point before James McGrath finished the game with a flourish, firing in his third goal in as many games to send the Lily Whites through to a final clash with Limerick. Erne Boxing Club host memorable night of international boxing
Last Friday, a packed crowd at the Westville Hotel in Enniskillen enjoyed a thrilling and unforgettable evening of international boxing. The event, hosted by Erne Boxing Club in collaboration with the IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Association) High-Performance Unit, saw Ireland's Elite Boxing Team face off against a visiting team from Austria. Despite some last minute withdrawals due to injuries and travel issues there were ten highly entertaining contests that included seven international contests and three supporting contests featuring Erne boxers. The night's action got underway with Erne's Ben Millar taking on Jack Willis (Gateway Sligo BC) in a 50kg Youth Contest. Millar made a fast start peppering his opponent with hard jabs to take control of the contest. After landing with unanswered combinations on several occasions he forced his brave opponent to take two stsnding counts and the referee to halt the contest in round two, handing Millar an RSC victory. Next up saw home favourite Cameron Suttle against the heavy-punching Alex McAleer (Ballyshannon BC) in a 67kg Senior Welterweight contest. Suttle established control of the contest working away behind the jab and held a solid guard to defend against his opponent's soild counter attacks. The good jab work from Suttle bloodied his opponent's nose and a good volley of punches forced his opponent to take a standing count. McAleer fought back gamely and had a good spell on top but Suttle rallied again forcing further nose damage and his opponent to take another standing count. The contest was subsequently called off afterwards handing Suttle an RSC win in round three. In the final supporting contest, Erne's Anthony Malanaphy took on Naoise McManus (Dumsna BC) in another 67kg Welterweight contest. McManus had beaten Anthony's clubmate Cameron Suttle earlier in the season and so he was on something of a revenge mission. For two rounds Malanaphy showed his subline skillset peppering McManus with his eye-catching long-range punches and his trademark uppercuts when in close. However, in round three Malanaphy opted to stand and trade with McManus who got inspired by his success and it resulted in an uncomfortable last round for the home favourite. However, Malanaphy dug deep and deservedly collected a unaminous 5-0 points win. This contest was followed by some traditional Irish Dancing from talented dancing sisters Chloe and Charley Gilmurray who entertained the visitors and large crowd. Following the parade of the two international teams, rising country singing star Cara McGillion sang great renditions of Danny Boy and Amhrán na bhFiann. Ireland's Gavin Ryan beat Michel Marinkovic (Austria) in the opening international contest at Bantamweight and Lee McEvoy followed that with a victory over Eric Banas at Featherweight. Next up was the main attraction Rhys Owens v Mery Ayan (Austria) in a Lightweight contest. Owens received a rapturous applause on his way to the ring and started the contest a bit nervously. Ayan took advantage and got the better of the early exchanges. However, Owens warmed into the contest and once he found his range he started to land with hurtful body shots. The opening round was very close but some sharp three-punch eye-catching combinations from Owens would have seen him edge the first session. In round two, Owens was buoyant and was now relishing the occasion. He applied constant pressure and although his Austrian opponent fought back gamely he was simply being outgunned and overwhelmed by the Erne starlet. Quality Owens combinations that mixed shots from body to head force Ayan to take a standing count and on resumption there was no let up. Owens knew he had his man going and continued to apply pressure and after landing with another hurtful combination the contest was called off handing him an RSC victory in round two. The large crowd raised the roof as Owens hand was officially raised in victory. There were a further two wins and two reverses for team Ireland in the final four team contests as the hosts romp to a 5-2 victory in the team match. Luke Hall (Ireland) beat Alfred Nana (Austria) by unanimous decision at Welterweight. Matthew McCole beat Rahman Altamirov (Austria) by RSC in round three at Light- Middleweight. Jason Clancy (Ireland) lost to Lucky Aimufa (Austria) by Split Decision 3-2 at Light-Heavyweight. Brian Kennedy (Ireland) lost to Micael Derouchie (Austria) by Unanimous Decision 5-0. Event organiser and Erne Boxing Club Head Coach Sean Crowley said: "It was a fantastic night for the club and a great night for Fermanagh. We have so many people and businesses that supported us to thank that we don't know where to start. "Our four boxers that competed tonight boxed absolutely brilliantly and impressed in front of the National coaches. "To get four wins out of four and especially to see Rhys win in an international vest in front of the home fans made all the stress and many tireless hours of unpaid work worthwhile for me, the club coaches and all the volunteers that made this event possible. "We did a great job of showcasing the beautiful county of Fermanagh and with further support could bring a major international competition like a European Championship in the future- that would be a great way to relaunch the new Lakeland forum when it reopens. "I just want to finish on behalf of the club by thanking all those key people that helped out, we are indebted to you."

Mikey Bambrick shines as Carlow shock Fermanagh in Tailteann Cup
Carlow began their Tailteann Cup campaign with a shock 3-18 to 2-18 win in Enniskillen as they saw off Fermanagh at Brewster Park with one goal the difference. A superb display of shooting sent them on their way as they hit five two-pointers and Mikey Bambrick scored 2-04 in an impressive individual performance. Bambrick began the game on fire as he hit Carlow's opening three scores. Bambrick and Shane McGullion traded with four minutes gone and the Carlow half-forward then got in behind the Erne defence to dribble a shot across the face and it trickled into the goal with a late Fermanagh boot sending it into the roof of the net. He added another point and Seán McNally then ran the length of the pitch to fist over the bar. Joe McDade kicked over a point for Fermanagh, but another Carlow goal went in on 12 minutes as John Murphy surged through the heart of the defence and laced a shot high into the net as the visitors led by 2-02 to 0-03. Fermanagh were awarded a penalty which was placed into the bottom left corner by Conor Love and, after Kevin Murphy swung over, Carlow had a big shout for a penalty following a Ché Cullen challenge, however, play was waved on by referee Barry Cassidy. Ryan Lyons slotted over after a Jones two-pointer free but John Phiri and a Bambrick two-pointer quickly cancelled that score. Kevin Murphy continued the scintillating Carlow scoring with another two-pointer. Josh Largo Elis and Ross Dunphy traded scores before the break with the score at 2-09 to 1-07 in favour of the away side at half time. Fermanagh hit an early goal on the resumption as Joe McDade finished from close range after a Darragh McGurn pass inside the Carlow defence. Niall Hickey hit a two-pointer after Darragh Foley and Conor McGee traded points. Jones hit a free inside the arc and Fermanagh spurned a goal chance through Love, but they would then level with points from Fionan O'Brien, McGee and Largo Elis, to make it 2-12 apiece on 56 minutes. Carlow's Kevin Murphy had a goal ruled out for square ball, although they hit the next 1-02 as substitute Ciarán Moran fisted over, Conor Crowley converted a free and Bambrick blasted to the net again. McGurn, McNally (2) and Largo Elis reduced the lead. Conor Doyle hit another two-pointer for Carlow in injury time as McGullion tagged on a late Erne point and they had no time to avail of Ross Dunphy's late black card as Carlow recorded a first win.
