Baidu responds to Sora and other rivals with MuseSteamer and AI-enhanced search features
Chinese tech firm Baidu has unveiled a new artificial intelligence-powered video generation tool, MuseSteamer, alongside a significant update to its core search engine, as the company attempts to maintain relevance in an increasingly crowded AI landscape. The newly launched MuseSteamer model enables users to create short video clips, up to ten seconds in length, from still images. It comes in three variants: Turbo, Pro and Lite, each tailored to different levels of performance and processing capacity. However, unlike competitors offering consumer-facing tools, Baidu's model is currently restricted to business use, with no immediate plans for a public-facing version. The release comes as global and Chinese firms alike continue to shift focus from conversational AI towards more complex media-generation models. In China, Baidu joins a growing list of companies including ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba that have introduced their own AI-driven video tools. In addition to the video generator, Baidu has overhauled its search engine interface. The updated platform now allows longer and more complex search inputs and integrates voice and image-based queries. The search results are curated using Baidu's proprietary AI technology to deliver more refined content. The company has been under mounting pressure from domestic rivals, with ByteDance's Doubao and Tencent's Yuanbao AI chatbots gaining ground in popularity. Baidu's latest moves suggest a strategic pivot aimed at addressing both technological shifts and competitive threats within China's rapidly evolving AI sector. Earlier in March this year, Baidu has announced the release of two new artificial intelligence (AI) models. The Chinese technology giant introduced Ernie 4.5, a foundation model that builds upon its predecessor, and Ernie X1, a reasoning-focused AI designed for deep thinking. Notably, Baidu has also made its AI-powered chatbot, Ernie Bot, free for users, eliminating any premium charges. In its official statement, Baidu confirmed that Ernie 4.5 became accessible via the chatbot platform. (With inputs from Reuters)

Inside Baidu's Open-Source AI Push
Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) is putting its Ernie 4.5 multimodal model familyten MoE variantsinto the open, along with industrial-grade toolkits, as it doubles down on AI framework leadership amid stiff China-market competition. In a blog post, Baidu announced that starting June 30 it will open source Ernie 4.5its latest large-scale multimodal lineup built on a Mixture-of-Experts architecture that boosts cross-modal understanding without sacrificing text performance. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with BIDU. Alongside model weights, the company is releasing resource-efficient training and inference toolkits designed for multi-hardware deployment. A Baidu spokesperson told CNBC that the rollout will be phased, ensuring developers can ramp up gradually. Baidu was among the first Chinese firms to ship a ChatGPT-style model domestically, but faces rivals such as Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Tongyi Qianwen, MiniMax, Baichuan and Zhipu AI. At April's developer conference, CEO Robin Li emphasized that Baidu's goal is to empower developers to build the best applicationswithout having to worry about model capability, costs, or development tools. Open sourcing Ernie 4.5 and its toolchains signals Baidu's intent to create an ecosystem moat: the more developers adopt its frameworks, the harder it becomes for competitors to catch up. The MoE design also paves the way for cost-efficient scaling, as compute resources are only routed to experts most relevant to a given task. Baidu Open-Sources AI Model 'Ernie' to Developers, Sends Jitters Across Global Tech Market
Chinese technology firm Baidu is offering access to its AI powerhouse Ernie, in a move that could lead to a new age in the development of AI. Developers and researchers worldwide will be able to begin tinkering and building on Baidu's so-called Ernie model starting this week, a move that signals a shift for China's AI industry. In February, Baidu unveiled plans to open-source its next-generation AI product, which is presumed to be called Ernie 5. Its previous models, Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1, were released by the company early this year. Now the focus remains on what Baidu will actually offer and how much of the technology it will share. AI open-sourcing comes in two variations. One is complete access, when a company makes the model's core code, training process, and architecture available. This allows others to use, modify, and build on their own versions of the model. The second is partial access, in which only the model's output weights are made available, so developers can apply the model but with no way of fully understanding or replicating it. It's still unclear whether Baidu will go fully open-source or just share some parts The company's decision could help democratize AI and make it more available for innovation throughout the world, experts said. Every time a leading company in the field open-sources a powerful model, it further elevates the bar of the entire industry, not just in China but worldwide, said Sean Ren, a computer science professor and prize-winning AI researcher. This is not Baidu's only major stride in AI. The company is also developing new technologies, such as an animal sound interpretation system and a smartphone AI agent that it's calling Xinxiang. When China open-sourced their DeepSeek-R1 model, it sent ripples through the tech world, including the stock prices of top U.S.-based AI companies. Some see them as breaking in a similar way to Baidu's move forcing the industry to a more open, collaborative development. Whether Baidu ever releases Ernie 5, in whole or in part, remains to be seen.

China's Baidu posts rise in Q1 revenue as seeks to grow AI presence
Chinese internet giant Baidu on Wednesday posted a quarterly revenue increase of 3%, as the firm seeks to grow its presence in artificial intelligence and expand its robotaxi business abroad. The Beijing-based firm operates China's main search engine and has long been a key player in the domestic tech industry -- but faces stiff competition both from traditional rivals like Tencent and Alibaba and a host of newer upstarts. Baidu derives a large part of its revenue from advertising, a sector vulnerable to fluctuations in consumer sentiment, and has sought to diversify with cloud computing, self-driving cars and AI.
