Ford Hit by 90th Recall--$570M Blow Could Derail Earnings Despite Analyst Upgrade

Ford (NYSE:F) is sliding againdown 3.15% at 11.51ameven after Barclays bumped its price target from $9 to $11. Why the drop? Investors are staring down a growing list of costly recalls, including a new one affecting nearly 700,000 Bronco Sports and Escapes due to fire risks tied to cracked fuel injectors. This marks Ford's 90th recall of the year. And unlike routine notices, this one doesn't even have a final fix yetjust a temporary software patch. That's not exactly the kind of reassurance markets like. The timing couldn't be worse. Warranty costs have already ballooned, with Q2 2024 expenses hitting roughly $2 billionor 4% of sales. That's more than double Ford's historical average. The fuel injector issue alone could tack on another $570 million in costs, eating into what analysts expect to be a $1.9 billion Q2 operating profit. COO Kumar Galhotra has framed the spike in recalls as a byproduct of Ford's "intensive" strategy to catch problems early, but to Wall Street, it's starting to look more like a pattern than a process. Analysts aren't exactly lining up behind the stock, either. Just 15% have a Buy rating on Ford, compared to an S&P 500 (SPY) average of around 55%. Even a price target hike couldn't offset the growing unease around execution and quality control. Until investors see evidence that these warranty bills and recall headlines are slowing down, Ford's stock may keep fighting an uphill battledespite any optimism from the Street. Editor's Letter: Travel Is Better When You Have a Guide

One of the privileges of my job has been discovering, on trips everywhere from Spain to Seoul, how a great guide can unlock a destination. A long-ago trip to Kenya was especially instructive: My guide showed me things few travelers get to see (the singing wells of the Samburu tribespeople of upper Kenya, for instance) while also giving me richer insight into famous places (the ever-popular Masai Mara) than I could have gleaned on my own. Along the way we became friends. I hope you see Condé Nast Traveler as a kind of a guide too. Our goal is to take you deeper—with projects such as our recent digital package on the world's quietest places (you can get a taste in Pico Iyer's luminous essay here) and via YouTube programming that lets you in on local secrets, like where the world's most interesting chefs eat when they're not at work. And of course we want to guide you in our print issues, including this one, with stories—like Catherine Fairweather's pine-scented trek along the hiking trails of Corsica and Gary Shteyngart's restaurant romp through the Georgian capital of Tbilisi—that elucidate how history, culture, and regional identity can shape a journey. Over the years, though, many readers have told me how much they wish they could actually go on these kinds of trips with us. So we've taken a step toward making that a reality by teaming up with the venerable travel company Abercrombie & Kent on a new program called Curated Escapes. The first two trips, to Japan and to California's Sonoma County, mix unexpected takes on popular hits with under-the-radar experiences. Japan: A Cultural Journey, visits Tokyo, Kanazawa and other coastal enclaves, and Kyoto in a quest to showcase the country's renowned collisions between the future and the past. Sonoma: A Culinary Adventure, pairs a behind-the-scenes look at the winery Passalacqua and an epic meal at the legendary SingleThread with immersion into some of the region's wild natural places, like Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. We're just getting started—look out for a new batch of Curated Escapes in the months ahead. We hope to travel with you soon. Ford Bronco Sport, Escape Recalled (Again) for Possible Fuel Leak

Ford is recalling 15,355 Bronco Sports (2021–2023 models) and 18,221 Escapes (2020–2022 models) due to a possible fuel leak. These models have the 1.5-liter engine and were previously recalled for the same issue, but the fix wasn't actually completed. Ford will cover the recall-related repair for free, and owners will be notified by mail by May 1. No, it's not déjà vu. Ford is once again recalling the Bronco Sport and Escape due to a possible fuel leak on models with the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The latest recall stems from a recall earlier this month for the same issue, which the company says wasn't correctly fixed the first time. The issue affects 2021 to 2023 Bronco Sports and 2020 to 2022 Escapes, which amounts to 33,576 total units. According to a recall report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford says its records show that, while the previously recalled Bronco Sports and Escapes were reported as repaired, they actually weren't. That means it's still possible for the engine's fuel injector to crack and leak fuel or fuel vapor that could interact with a hot surface and possibly start a fire. The fix itself requires updating the software for the vehicles' powertrain control module. However, during the original recall, the tool to do this didn't properly upload the software, so owners will need to return to their local Ford dealership to try again. The work will be done for free, and Ford says it will notify dealers by April 24; owners will be notified by mail by May 1.
