Motherwell boss 'expects more new faces' but says there have been plenty

The Dane brought in four new players in the last week as the Premiership campaign nears Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou expects more new faces at Fir Park, but reckons four signings in a week was pretty decent. The Steelmen brought in striker Eseosa Sule on loan from West Brom, and signed left-back Emmanuel Longelo from Birmingham City on a two-year deal, and brought in wingers Elijah Just from Horsens and Ibrahim Said from Viborg FF. ‌ That was added to previous signings Lukas Fadinger, Elliot Watt and Jordan McGhee. ‌ McGhee wasn't in the squad, but Watt and Fadinger started, while Sule, Just and Longelo climbed off the bench. He said: 'There's probably going to be a few new faces still to come. We'll see when, how fast, and how many. 'I think a lot has happened already with the squad over the summer, but there's still a little bit of work to be done. 'We are working tirelessly outside the pitch and in the background to get a few new faces in to lift the quality and the width. 'I think it was really positive to get some of the new guys in [against Clyde] with five official debuts. 'We got one of the younger players in, Luca Ross, to play some minutes in a game that was very hectic, and not being 3-0 up or 3-0 down. ‌ 'I'm pleased with a lot of things.' Dane Askou says goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, who missed most of pre-season with an injury, is nearing a comeback. ‌ He said: 'He's probably not far off. He had a little set-back in pre-season, but he's doing well. 'He is following his plan, and will be hopefully ready soon.' Motherwell and Clyde scrapped out a 2-2 draw in their Premier Sports Cup group stage opener, with Tawanda Maswanhise netting a double in between strikes from James Hilton and Liam Scullion. ‌ Askou's side follow that up with the visit of Peterhead on Tuesday and a trip to Stenhousemuir on Saturday, and he hopes to iron out a few wrinkles. He said: 'We have a game again on Saturday and again on Tuesday, so it's about loading the squad as best as we can. ‌ 'I think, in terms of structure, good understanding, in terms of effort in general, it was good. 'In terms of the last bit of quality, we know we have to improve. 'We know we have to be sharp in the final third, and I expected mistakes on that pitch, because you can't play perfectly on a pitch like this – but I expected maybe a little less mistakes. 'I think it was better in the second half than the first, when there was a little bit too much frustration, so that's something to adjust and improve. 'We know that the quality needs to be better, and I think it will be on Tuesday on a surface that allows a higher tempo in the game.'
